JAMES HYDE

TAKORADI, GHANA
The hospital placement itself was just
amazing. I got to work in a number of the
different dispensaries in the hospital as well as
visit a few clinics. These included an HIV
Clinic, Diabetes Clinic and Hypertension Clinic,
where I got to see patients getting counselled
by the local doctors.
I also got to do ward rounds for a few days.
During these days, I encountered a number of
different medical conditions and learnt the
different treatments for each of them as well as
seeing first hand the way the patients are
cared for in a developing country.

Travelling to a foreign country and learning
completely different practices can be daunting.
However, the local staff were so supportive and
patient that I soon learned all the procedures and
was able to work comfortably.
My days included dispensing (no counselling was
involved), entering prescription charges, filling
prescriptions and assisting with the patient
discharge process. On certain days,
I would join the nurses on ward rounds
(paediatrics, medical or surgical wards)
to watch them administer medications.
I appreciated the experience as it allowed
me to gain a better understanding of the
hospitals overall procedures.
