Lesson Plan. 2
Activity:
Health Related Fitness

Resources:
Stop Watch
Work sheets (Sit & Reach Test)
Pens Benches, Ruler (30 or 50 cm in
length) / Sit and Reach Box

Objectives:
All - To understand how to stretch safely
Most Understands the effect of warm-up on flexibility. Can consistency and confidently
individually assess their flexibility
Some As above an knows the difference between mobility & stretching
Starter: To set objective of the lesson.
Main Lesson: Warming up and cooling down (or preparing for and recovering from
exercise) & Stretching

SUBJECT MATTER

TEACHER ACTIVITY

PUPIL ACTIVITY

Effect of exercise on the

body, e.g. increase body
temperature and heart rate

Warming up means
increasing body temperature

H - Heart Rate Raising / M mobility / S - Stretching

(Dynamic / Static)

Joints & their functions

How to measure
flexibility

Effect of exercise on the

body: Doing

Pulse Check: Re-cap

explanation what the
pulse is and how to count
it correctly
A brief explanation of joints
and their function
How to increase body and
joint temperature
Demonstration of sit and
reach test emphasising
safety
Ask pupils to compare how
they are feeling in
comparison to the beginning
of the class with reference to
their flexibility

Compare - Body temperature,

Breathing rate, pulse rate

Questioning

Note the difference between

resting flexibility score, before
and after exercise.
Understanding the principle of
progressive warm-up leads to an
improved flexibility

Students observe partners face

and note colour.
Check own breathing.
Participate in stretching

Try to stretch at least one

muscle group per day.

All
Teacher Activity:
What is the Pulse:
Explain what the pulse is and how to
count it correctly

Most
Consistency and confidently take a heart rate at
appropriate locations, and helping lesser able
students to locate.

Locating the Pulse:

Show pupils how to locate their
Carotid or Radial pulse
Students are to work in pairs and measure
flexibility remembering to record result. (If
this is be done before a warm-up it must be
performed slowly.)

Is able to demonstrate safe & effective

stretching

NB Tight teacher control required here,

With reference to safety in stretching.
Student Activity (Working in Pairs):
Work in pairs
Use Pack of Cards game (see Lesson
Layout).
Pack of Cards game: Circuit 1
Students do a set of 10 step-ups on
bench at before performing at each
station.
Stop after 3 minutes and re-measure
flexibility (using sit and reach).
Students to report difference
between 1st & 2nd measure to
teacher / non-doer who records
these under + or columns. (The
majority of scores will have improved
here.)
Teacher:
Comment on the effect increasing body
temperature has on flexibility and as a
protection against injury.
Pack of Cards game: Circuit 2
Now students jog around outside of
circuit before performing at each
station
Stop after 3 minutes and re-measure
flexibility (using sit and reach).
Students to report the difference
between 2nd & 3rd measure to
teacher / non-doer who records
these under + or columns. (Score
will not have improved quite so much
here supporting the fact that body
temperature is the most important
factor in flexibility.)
Pack of Cards game: Circuit 3
Now students jog around outside of
circuit, then undertake safe and

consistency and confidently assess their Heart

rate, and

effective flexibility exercises, specific

to each sign (hold for 8-10 seconds)
use demonstration.
Stop after 3 minutes and re-measure
flexibility (using sit and reach).
Students report results to teacher /
non-doer who records these under +
or columns. (Score will not have
improved quite so much here in
fact flexibility will get worse if
students have cooled down.)

In Demos highlight the idea of Quality and

not Quantity, Coaches / Non-doers to use
the points to consider section on their card
for reference
Plenary: To re-cap lesson objectives In groups, 1 minutes discussion on teaching points on
lessons skills. Teacher lead Q&A, ask questions to pupils to confirm understanding / why they
would do skills / and TPs.
AOTT: Helping with coaching and organising pupils and stations in circuit. Supporting Lesser
able / Most able pupils with further assistance or development.
