Lesson Plan. 2
Activity:
Health Related Fitness

Resources:
Stop Watch
Work sheets (Counting Heart Rates)
Pens
2x Hear rate Monitors
Skipping Ropes

Objectives:
All - To understand how to take a heart rate before and after an exercise session.
Most - Can consistency and confidently individually assess their Heart Rate before, during and
after an exercise session
Some - To be able to consistency and confidently correlate their Heart Rate before, during and
after an exercise session to heart rate zones.
Starter: To set objective of the lesson.
Main Lesson: Warming up and cooling down (or preparing for and recovering from
exercise) & Taking Heart Rates (Level 4b: Cardiovascular Endurance)

SUBJECT MATTER

TEACHER ACTIVITY

PUPIL ACTIVITY

Effect of exercise on the

body, e.g. increase body
temperature and heart rate

Warming up means
increasing body
temperature

H - Heart Rate Raising / M - mobility / S - Stretching

(Dynamic / Static)

Locating the Pulse

Show pupils how to locate

their Carotid or Radial
pulse

Locate their Carotid or radial pulse

Explain what the pulse is

and how to count it
correctly

Practice counting their pulse for given periods of time. eg. ,

10,15,30 secs and multiplying by the appropriate number to
get the number of heart beats per minute (Heart Rate)

Fill in Worksheet

Practice counting the pulse of another using both the

Carotid and Radial locations
Estimating HR Zone & count pulse: Explain that students
should locate their pulse as soon as they stop exercising.

Correlation estimated
Heart Rate Zone

Compare - Body temperature, Breathing rate, pulse rate

Questioning

Explain what is the Pulse

Ask pupils to compare how

they are feeling in
comparison to the
beginning of the class
Why?

Cool down and Stretch

Homework

Whose Heart beats slower

a fit or unfit persons?
Demonstrate
Stretches.Slow walking
with partner, change
direction on demand.
Remember to record pulse
rate.

Note the difference between resting pulse rate before and

after exercise.
Illustrate the principle of progressive warm-up and
increasing intensity
Body requires more O2 for energy therefore the heart has to
beat faster to supply the muscles with the O2
A fit persons as their heart is stronger from training they
can pump more blood and therefore more oxygen in one
beat
Students observe partners face (note the colour) / What
has happened to your breathing rate?
Students observe partners face and note colour.
Check own breathing.
Participate in streching

Measure heart rate just before getting out of bed in

the morning.
Then measure after running around. Whats the

Teacher Activity:
What is the Pulse:
Explain what the pulse is and how to
count it correctly

Most
Consistency and confidently take a heart rate
Locations, and helping lesser able students to
locate.

Locating the Pulse:

Show pupils how to locate their
Carotid or Radial pulse
Student Activity (Working in Pairs):
1. Assess their HR for that moment
2. Locate their Carotid or radial pulse.
3. Practice counting their pulse for
given periods of time .eg. ,10,15,30
secs and multiplying by the
appropriate number to get the
number of heart beats per minute
(Heart Rate)
Circuit: Jump Rope
In Pairs, 1 person to complete circuit, 2nd
person will stay at station and coach
individuals through their exercise and
demonstrates the correct technique. Whilst
the other completes a circuit.
Once a circuit is completed, pairs swap roles
(Introduce the idea of Quality and not
Quantity), Coaches to use the points to
consider section on their card for reference

consistency and confidently assess their Heart

rate, and

Student Activity (Working in Pairs):

After each station pupils to compare
their Heart Rate & Training Zones.
Consider how accurate they were.
Less able students to wear heart rate
monitors and compare to actual
recordings from partner.

Plenary: To re-cap lesson objectives In groups, 1 minutes discussion on teaching points on

lessons skills. Teacher lead Q&A, ask questions to pupils to confirm understanding / why they
would do skills / and TPs.
AOTT: Helping with coaching and organising pupils and stations in circuit. Supporting Lesser
able / Most able pupils with further assistance or development.
