UICC (Union for International Cancer Control)


1. What the abbreviation means?
The Union for International Cancer Control (previously named
International Union Against Cancer) or UICC is a membership based,
non-governmental organization that exists to help the global health
community accelerate the fight against cancer.
2. Formation (when)?
Founded in 1933, and features the worlds major cancer societies,
ministries of health, research institutes and patient groups. UICC
partners

with

its

members,

key

partners,

the

World

Health

Organization, World Economic Forum and others, to tackle cancer on a


global scale.
3. Governance
UICC is governed by its member organisations, which meet in a
general assembly, held in conjunction withthe World Cancer Congress,
every two years. Between assemblies, a board of 17 directors, elected
by the General Assembly, act as the executive body of UICC.
4. Where is the head quarters?
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, UICC has a membership of over 800
organisations across 155 countries.
5. Why was it created?
To unite the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to
promote greater equity, and to integrate cancer control into the world
health and development agenda.

6. Celebrity ambassadors
UICC has consultative status with the United Nations (UN) Economic
and

Social

Council.

It

works

closely

with

the

World

Health

Organization,[citation needed] the International Agency for Research


on Cancer,[8] and the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy
(PACT).
7. World Cancer Congress 2014
The next World Cancer Congress will take place in Melbourne,
Australia on 3-6 December 2014 under the theme of Joining Forces
Accelerating Progress. The Congress has become a not-to-be-missed
event in the global health calendar of events and promises to provide
participating delegates with many opportunities to interact with an
impressive range of experts from all over the world.
