Chapter 4: Mass

Fill in the blanks with the correct answers.

(For questions 1 to 3, refer to the diagram below.)

Question 1: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

6 similar porcelain cats weigh 3

kg.

2 porcelain cats and 500 g-weight weigh 1 kg 500 g.

So, 2 porcelain cats weigh 1 kg.
6 cats = 2 cats + 2 cats + 2 cats
Weight of 6 cats = 1 kg + 1 kg + 1 kg = 3 kg
Question 2: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

The puppy weighs 1

kg 500

g.

2 porcelain cats weigh 1 kg.

1 porcelain cat weighs 500 g.
1 porcelain cat and a real puppy weigh 2 kg.
Weight of puppy = 2 kg - weight of porcelain cat
= 2 kg - 500 g
= 2000 g - 500 g
= 1500 g
= 1000 g + 500 g
= 1 kg + 500 g

The puppy weighs 1 kg 500 g.

Question 3: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

The total weight of 2 porcelain cats and 2 puppies that weigh the same is 4

2 porcelain cats weigth 1 kg.

A puppy weighs 1 kg 500 g
Weight of 2 puppies = 1 kg 500 g + 1 kg 500 g
= 2 kg 1000 g
= 3 kg
Weight of 2 porcelain cats + weight of 2 puppies
=1 kg + 3 kg
= 4 kg
Question 4: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

(For questions 4 to 6, refer to the diagram below.)

A pear weighs 350

g.

An apple weighs 250 g.

An apple and an orange weigh 600 g.
600 g - 250 g = 350 g
An orange weighs 350 g.
An orange and a pear weigh 700 g.
700 g - 350 g = 350 g

kg.

So, a pear weighs 350 g.

Question 5: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

An orange weighs as much as an apple and 100

An apple weighs 250 g.

An apple and an orange weigh 600 g.
600 g - 250 g = 350 g
An orange weighs 350 g.
250 g + ? = 350 g
? = 350 g - 250 g = 100 g
Question 6: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

An apple, an orange and a pear weigh 950

An apple weigh 250 g.

600 g - 250 g = 350 g
An orange weighs 350 g.
700 g - 350 g = 350 g
A pear weighs 350 g
250 g + 350 g + 350 g = 950 g
Question 7: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

How heavy are 3 toy cars?

g.

g of weight.

Answer = 2

3 kg 500

750 g

2 toy cars weigh 2 kg 500 g.

2 kg 500 g = 1 kg 250 g + 1 kg 250 g
So, 1 toy car weighs 1 kg 250 g.
1 kg 250 g + 1 kg 250 g + 1 kg 250 g = 3 kg 750 g
3 toy cars weigh 3 kg 750 g.
Question 8: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

(For questions 8 and 9, refere to the diagram below.)

The book and a parcel weigh 3

(1 kg = 1000 g)

kg.

The book weigh 1 kg 500 g.

2 parcels weigh 3 kg.
3 kg = 3000 g = 1500 g + 1500 g
So, 1 parcel weigh 1500 g.
1 kg 500 g + 1500 g
= 1 kg 500 g + 1 kg 500 g
= 2 kg 1000 g
= 3 kg
Question 9: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

A parcel and the toy aeroplane are 900

g heavier than the book.

(1 kg = 1000 g)

The book weigh 1 kg 500 g.

2 parcels weigh 3 kg.
3 kg = 3000 g = 1500 g + 1500 g
So, 1 parcel weigh 1500 g.
The toy aeroplane weighs 900 g.
1500 g + 900 g = 2400 g
The parcel and the toy aeroplane weigh 2400 g.
2400 g - 1 kg 500 g = 2400 g - 1500 g = 900 g

Question 10: Skill: Measuring and calculating mass

Vase B weighs 3
(1 kg = 1000 g)

kg 800

Vase A weighs 2 kg 200 g.

Vase A and vase B weigh 6 kg.
6 kg - 2 kg 200 g
= 5 kg 1000 g - 2 kg 200 g
= 3 kg 800 g
So, vase B weighs 3 kg 800 g.

g.
