Satellite & Sensing
Technology to
Study Water Resources
Most countries around the world are facing difficulties in securing their
drinking water needs. The reasons behind these problems are likely to be
an increasing number of population and excessive use of water, as well as
the contamination of surface and groundwater, making it unfit for drinking. In addition to these difficulties, the amount of water available on earth
is constant over time, despite the disparity in these quantities between
one year and another.
This in turn has pushed researchers to find new ways in order to contribute
to the knowledge of water locations and the quantities available, as well
as developing methods used in water desalination and wastewater treatment and rational use of water for irrigation purposes. One of the methods
that scientists and specialists have recently developed to determine the
locations of the surface and groundwaters reservoirs, and their quantities
is the satellite and sensing technology. In collaboration with NASA, the
World Resources Institute has discovered a way to use the information
provided by satellites to improve the management and use of water. Approximately 200 miles above the Earths surface, two satellites circle the
planet, always between 106 and 193 miles apart. But while these twins
called Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) live in space,
theyre providing invaluable assistance in managing natural resources on
the ground.
GRACE has created a unique picture of groundwater level changes around
the Earth over the past 11 years. This information is already helping water
users and policymakers manage scarce groundwater resources. Its also
providing an example of how satellites and remote sensing are reshaping the water world. Most countries around the world invest in these waters without having exact information on the amount of water available
in each water reservoir. So it is hard to know the amount of water being
pumped and invested and its impact on natural feed rates. This is so much
like withdrawing money from your bank account without knowing the
amounts available in your account, and this is surely dangerous.

Iran
USD10 Billion Power Deal
Discussion with Moscow
Tehran and Moscow are currently negotiating to sign a deal worth USD10 billion in
the power sector, according to Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak. The energy
minister said Russian companies are hard
at work on the terms of the contracts, adding that the next session of an intergovernmental commission would be held in the
Iranian capital, Tehran, in September. We
recently discussed with the Iranian energy
minister Hamid Chitchian a whole package
of projects worth nearly USD10 billion,
which could be carried out in the electricity sector. These are for the construction of
thermal power plants, the involvement of
Russian companies in equipment supplies
and the renovation of supply networks.
Novak said. Iran plans to develop cooperation with Russia in the nuclear power sector as well. Moscow plans to sign an agreement with Tehran this year to build up to
eight new nuclear reactors in Iran. According to Reuters, negotiations on the agreement are in the final stage, noting that two
reactors could be constructed at the Bushehr power plant and six others will be built
at other Iranian nuclear sites.

Disinfection Methods to Experience

An Upbeat Future

t is noted that many people die every year from contaminated water since the water quality is declining. Different water sectors face
problems to keep the early water quality through conventional treatment/disinfection approaches. Meanwhile the water quality regulations are becoming more stringent, complex and costly. Driven by rising demand for water reuse, the market for disinfection systems is
expected to reach USD2.96 billion globally in 2019, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan. While chlorine-based products will continue to
dominate, UV systems are expected to experience rapid growth.

Industrialization and urbanization, coupled with more

stringent legislation, is requiring extensive water reuse,
the report states. Disinfection, in this context, is regarded
as an excellent secondary treatment step in the water reuse cycle, which can yield water for use in non-food crop
irrigation and industrial cooling. This includes growth in
water-critical industries such as power, food and beverage and pharmaceuticals.
The sterilization services industry has been growing at a
healthy growth rate in the past decade, says MarketsandMarkets. There has been a rise in stringent regulations
regarding sterilization imposed by authorities in several
developed nations, and this has led to companies outsourcing their sterilization activities to third parties; this is
also referred to as contract sterilization services. MarketsandMarkets explains that this trend has helped OEMs
of medical devices to reduce their costs substantially. According to the same source, the developed economies
of U.S. and Europe are major markets for sterilization
equipment and services companies; however, emerging
markets provide significant investment opportunities for
manufacturers as developed countries reach saturation.
The Asian market is expected to display favorable growth
in the coming years, primarily due to rise in awareness,
growth of aging population, increase in number of surgeries, and growth in per capita income.
However, there is a little completion between sterilization
and disinfection techniques. Experts believe that there
is a shift from chlorine to UV systems, with more than 25
percent of wastewater treatment plants using this environment friendly technology. With UV systems, water
passes by ultraviolet lamps submerged in the effluent,
which alter the DNA of the bacteria or microorganisms.
As a result, they cannot multiply and are rendered inactivated, so they cant harm humans. UV has been around

even if the

more than 100 years and has been used in various industries for equipment sterilization.
On the other side and despite the widespread acceptance that disinfection is vital to managing scarce water
resources, high overall expenditure including capital
investments, running costs and service and maintenance
outlays is acting as a major restraint to uptake, says Frost
& Sullivans report Global Water and Wastewater Disinfection Systems Market. This is particularly the case in developing and poorly developed countries. Developing nations prefer low-cost solutions, even if the quality of the
product is compromised, said Frost & Sullivan's Energy &
Environmental Research Analyst Vandhana Ravi. This is
demonstrated by the fact that gas chlorination, despite
its hazardous nature, still dominates the APAC and Middle
East and Africa market, even while the Americas and Europe shift towards sustainable solutions. Frost & Sullivan
explains that municipalities and government entities will,
therefore, have focus on raising awareness about quality
issues and sustainable alternatives. Companies, on their
part, need to design high-performance, cost-effective disinfection solutions.

Wastewater Treatment Systems

Rooted Development

he demand for pure potable water is met by a wide array of wastewater treatment technologies, including physical treatments, chemical treatment, biological treatment, screening, and membrane filtration. These technologies have witnessed an outstanding growth
throughout the past decade, and industry experts forecast the global markets for wastewater recycling and reuse technologies to increase
from USD9.5 billion in 2012 to USD23.4 billion in 2017, reflecting a five-year CAGR of 19.7%. BCC Research, which offers these market expectations, explains that these global markets increased from nearly USD6.7 billion to USD9.5 billion during the period from 2009 to 2012, equivalent
to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6%.

The market expansion projected for membrane wastewater treatment technologies is rooted in industrial productivity and development and expansion of municipal
and packaged wastewater treatment systems, according
to a report by SBI Energy. Key regional considerations include trends in upgrading existing facilities, demand for
new facilities, shifts towards higher wastewater control
standards in Asia and especially in China, and control and
removal of emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals.
The same report says that as technology cost and operation period energy requirements for membrane technologies continue to decline, membrane wastewater
treatment technologies are expected to find application
across a broadening range of industrial and municipal
installations, including strong increases in wastewater
recycling, as well as increased and enhanced industrial
process water reuse and recycling for non-industrial uses
Demand for reclamation is particularly strong in arid regions where water supply is limited. In these instances,
treating wastewater for reuse is often preferable to desalination or long range procurement fresh water from
geographically distant sources, says SBI Energys report.
Stringent legislation on effluent discharge will continue
to boost the demand for wastewater treatment and recovery technologies, such as membrane-based systems,
activated carbon, and media filtration, among others according GBI Research. Acting as a primary driver, legislative directives have revitalized the wastewater treatment and recovery equipment market and enhanced the
growth prospects for secondary and tertiary recycling
says GBI Researchs report Wastewater Treatment and
Recovery Systems Market to 2020 - Tightening Wastewater Discharge Regulations to Stimulate the Growth of
Membrane Based Systems. The aim is to promote water
conservation by treating and reusing wastewater. The
report continues to explain that these legislative direc-

tives have placed enormous pressure on industries to

clean up their wastewater. The local water regulations
are keen to adopt international regulations, for example
China recently adopted regulatory systems from the US
Environmental Protection Agencys (EPA) practices.
International regulations are expected to replace local
and national regulations, thereby driving growth in the
adoption of wastewater treatment and recovery technologies. International regulations are expected to supersede some of the local and national regulations driving
growth and introduction of new products in the industry. This trend is likely to favor global conglomerates and
drive further consolidation in the industry.
On the same level, GBI Researchs report points out that
companies that identify these trends at an early stage
and proactively implement strategies for wastewater
treatment recycle and reclamation of water will have an
edge over their competitors. To this end, industries are
increasingly embracing membrane based technology for
treatment of industrial water and wastewater. Stringent
regulations on industrial water use and wastewater discharge will continue to offer sales growth of water recycling system.

Ovivo Takes it to the Bridge

Ovivo is on course to complete a major refurbishment
of Dorr Oliver (a registered trademark of FLSmidth
A/S) type scraper bridges at a sewage treatment works
(STW) in the Home Counties. Ovivos best value solutions include full replacement of all drive units and
rail track, plus refurbishment of underwater and scum

removal systems. The scraper bridges in this latest

contract had reached the end of their working lives,
encountering numerous mechanical drive or lift-system
failures, also suffering from crabbing whilst travelling
along the tanks. As the bridges continued to deteriorate, the STW was issued with an odor abatement notice
due to the poor condition of the tanks sludge removal
system. The scraper bridge currently undergoing refurbishment by Ovivo utilize a central drive unit with
double output shafts to line shafts, couplings and plummer block bearings.A one-to-one chain drive leading
down to a further drive unit carries the long travel cog
drive wheel, which in turn traverses the bridges along
rail track, up and down the tanks. The bridges have a
skimmer blade mechanism that collects scum from
the surface and discharges it up and over a stainless
steel ramp into a scum outlet channel. This mechanism
operates with the underwater structure which transfers
settled sludge to a hopper at the end of the tank.A further scum blade is attached to the opposite side of the
machine to trap scum from passing back into the tank.
Ovivo was awarded the contract partly because of its
considerable knowledge of scraper bridge technology.

BIODOS Uses State-of- the-Art Technology

Grey Water is the generic term given to water from
showers, bathtubs, laundry and bathroom sinks. Properly treated, this water can now be recycled and reused
for landscape irrigation and flushing toilets. BIODOS
with its cooperate partner GLOBAL ENFILTEC uses a
state-of-the-art filtration VPMF (Variable Pore Structure

layer is disassembled by backwash water to be fed in
reverse direction for the filtration. This VPMFs execute

The Filtering Micro Sieve ROTADISC

The ROTADISC Micro sieve by ESTRUAGUA Water
Technology is a very robust, mono block piece of
equipment designed for micro solids filtration, with
a minimum mesh of 10 microns and maximum1000
microns.Due to its compact and resistant design, this
equipment can work without any problems during 24
hours for a long period of time and without requiring
any type of maintenance. The ROTADISC Micro sieve
can be provided in a compact version or ready for civil
work installation. Due to the increase in the hydraulic
load and the changes in the sedimentation characteristics of the activated sludge, sometimes thesecondary decanters do not fulfill the requirements with reference to solids retention in the effluent. For example in
the case of storms the solids in suspension in the secondary effluent can quickly reach 3-4 times the value
recorded during dry time. The consequent increase in
the loads of DQO, DBO and phosphorus in the effluent gives rise to a greater demand of oxygen in the
receiving channel and, therefore, to an elevated spillway. Placing a micro sieve in the exit of the secondary
decanteroffers an effective and economic solution
and permits a reduction of 5-10 mg/l in the solids in

suspension and therefore in the polluting load of the

effluent. With the ROTADISC Micro sieve one practically obtains a solid free effluent and an important reduction of the demand of oxygen associated with the
polluting load. It allows a fine screening of large flows
with a mesh of up to 10 mm.

Sustainable Savings for Wastewater Treatment

Sustainable solutions can offer more than just environmental benefits. Green technologies can offer
significant cost savings as well. Virginia utility Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) was looking for
these when Chief of Special Projects, Charles Bott, approached World Water Works regarding the innovative and very environment friendly DEMON deammonification system. This unique system replaces
the complicated methods of conventional nitrogen
removal with a two-step single-stage process that
provides many benefits. In addition to reducing a facilitys energy requirements and carbon footprint, this
process completely eliminates the need for chemicals. A few months after installation, HRSD has not
only been presented with the American Association
of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES)
Honor Award for Environmental Sustainability, but
is also on track to save USD200,000 this year. When
companies talk about sustainable solutions, they
often focus strictly on the environmental benefits and
the upfront cost of the installation, explained Chandler Johnson, Chief Technology Officer at World Water
Works, However, with systems like the DEMON treatment process, innovations that help save the environment can also help to save your facility money.

Environment friendly DEMON deammonification system

A Chemical-free and carbon-fixing process

The DEMON process was developed by researchers at
the University of Innsbruck, led by Dr. Bernhard Wett,
as an alternative to traditional methods for removing
ammonia from wastewater. Conventional nitrogen removal has required a large amount of energy, a carbon
source -- usually methanol, and often other chemicals
as well. These systems use a multi-step nitrification/
denitrification process: The waste ammonia (NH3) is
oxidized to nitrite by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB);
this nitrite is oxidized again to nitrate by nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB); and then this nitrate is converted
into nitrogen gas in two additional biological steps. The
first two steps require relatively high levels of dissolved
oxygen, supplied by blowers. The last two require an
additional carbon source (usually methanol) and produce a large amount of sludge, which is expensive to
handle and dispose.

Upgrading capacity with innovation

HRSD operates thirteen different wastewater treatment plants across southeast Virginia, serving over
1.6 million people and handling a total of 249 million
gallons per day (MGD). Since its founding in 1940, the
group has been dedicated to innovation in wastewater treatment, new technologies and even patenting
unique processes. HRSD initially approached the DEMON project from the perspective of cost management. Responding to new regulations on wastewater
quality, HRSD had added denitrification filters to its
York River plant. This upgrade was undertaken with
the expectation that the plant would be expanded
from 15 MGD per day to 30, but when that expansion
was delayed, they were left with a partial 15 MGD and
partial 30 MGD plant that was very expensive to operate from a chemical standpoint.

DEMON changes all of this. It employs a two-step,

single-stage process to provide equally effective
nitrogen removal. First, the same ammonia oxidizing bacteria convert about half of the ammonia into
nitrite. Next, a second class of bacteria (Anammox)
converts the remaining ammonia with this nitrite to
produce nitrogen gas. Anammox bacteria work in an
anaerobic environment, so this second step requires
no dissolved oxygen and therefore no extra energy. It
also requires no methanol or other chemicals.

Bott had seen operational DEMON systems while

over in Europe, and when he returned stateside,
he was sure this was the perfect solution for HRSD.
With a lot of these processes that are emerging in
Europe, they almost seem too good to be true, he
explained, But once you see them in action, and you
see that they are accomplishing exactly what they
promise, when I got back from Germany, I was dying for a DEMON.
Arab Water World (AWW)

Overall, DEMON completely eliminates the need for

chemicals, greatly reduces sludge handling volumes
by up to 90%, and reduces nitrogen removal energy
requirements by up to 60%. In addition, since the
Anammox consumes carbon dioxide, the DEMON
process is carbon fixing and can reduce the carbon
footprint of a wastewater treatment facility.

A Bright & Sunny Solution:

Solar Desalination

oupling renewable energy (RE) sources with desalination has the potential to provide a sustainable source of potable water. A wide
variety of options are available to link RE and desalination technologies. Solar energy and in particular concentrating solar power (CSP)
has significant benefits in Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, according to The World Bank. Given its huge potential in terms of
resources and significant prospect for development, CSP is a competitive energy supply option over time. Moreover, as the only economically
viable RE technology to store and provide power on demand, CSP is especially suitable to power desalination plants, most of which are required
to operate around the clock.

Historically, in the Middle East water and power have

been produced in facilities next to each other. Excess
power is used to heat the water in thermal desalination plants.
Despite its history, desalination technologies are currently developing quickly with a lot of companies preempting demand and investing heavily into R&D says
Frost & Sullivan. Developing trends include improving
cost competitiveness of RO technology (membrane improvements and energy recovery devices) and more
hybrid plants across the GCC region (recent years have
seen GCC demand for desalinated water increasing at
a rate of 9-11% but demand for power increasing at a
rate of 4-6%. As a result, Frost & Sullivan explains that a
total of 39 million cubic meters/day of desalination capacity is expected to be added by 2020 in the Middle
East region. This translates into an approximate investment of between USD45 - 50 billion. As a result, desalination started to take up new levels in the region. The
potential of renewable desalination is witnessing an exciting interest in MENA countries. Being one of the most
popular renewable energy sources in Saudi Arabia, the
country is on track to build the worlds largest solarpowered water desalination plant in Al-Khafji Governorate on the Arabian Gulf coast that will have the capacity
to produce 30,000 cubic meters when completed.

Future outlook for CSP (Concentrating Solar Power)

desalination
The growing demand for fresh water is creating a large
and rapidly growing market for desalination, and hence
significantly large energy demand. The cost of CSP desalination likely will decrease in response to technical
innovation, new materials, and efficiency improvements, just as desalination did when RO was first introduced, according to a recent MENA Development
Report by The World Bank titled Renewable Energy

Desalination, An Emerging Solution to Close the Water Gap in the Middle East and North Africa. Demand
and competition among suppliers will be the primary
driving forces that cut costs. Desalination and energy
professionals believe it will take another 15 years to
develop the required critical mass to reduce costs. An
important precondition is that international agencies
and governments as well as the private sector promote
renewable energy (such as CSP) for national power supply as part of the long-term strategy to increase energy
security and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, says
The World Bank. Notable research and development efforts are being supported by the European Union, Germany, Spain, and the United States. Similar initiatives
are being undertaken by MENA governments including
Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Qatar, and the United
Arab Emirates.

Adionics Unveils a New Disruptive

Technology, AquaOmnes
AquaOmnes by Adionics is a new technology removing salts from water through saline water deionization
by liquid-liquid absorption. In other words, it removes
salts from water at ambient pressure and without the
scaling barrier. There are three main benefits: it is a
low energy, low liquid discharge, and a truly low cost
effective technology. This technology could, at least,
halve the price of produced water when compared
to the current best of breed technologies available
for desalination. AquaOmnes is designed for any kind
of saline water, from Municipal to Industrial, including brines, and their related applications. Adionics
is moving forward to implement the AquaOmnes
technology this year in the Middle East for a significant client. In March this year, AquaOmnes technology has been selected by the Worldwide Innovation
Challenge Commission sponsored by the French
Government in the category Value-creation through
Sea: desalination and marine wealth. AquaOmnes is
a patented technology invented and developed by
Adionics. His Founder and CEO, Guillaume de Souza,
presented the technology on Monday May 5th during
the IFAT fair. It is a real turning point. So far, the classic desalination technologies were removing water
from saline water. Our AquaOmnes technology does
Arab Water World (AWW)

the opposite: it removes salts from saline water. For

seawater for example, we move only 3.5% of the mass
and therefore consume far less energy. It works from
brackish water to highly concentrated brine. This is
where the innovation lies and we aim to democratize
this way the access to desalination for all, Said de
Souza. Adionics is a private French company created
in 2012 after 5 years of Research with the ambition
to become one of the leading technology provider in
the desalination supply chain.

Hydrosmart Water Conditioning for

Vineyard Productivity

ydrosmart has entered an unprecedented phase of scientific research and development starting from 2009 and extending into 2015.
Dr. Bob Moore, Research and Development Manager at Hydrosmart Agronomic, says that agronomic and physical test results have
been coming in fast, showing that all of the great testimonials provided by farmers over more than a decade have been based on
verifiable science. In the following, Moore shows evidence of application of Hydrosmart to the vineyard industry in a time of drought. The
company continues to receive excellent reports back from satisfied clients, whose businesses depend on use of low water quality resources.
Essentially, the way Hydrosmart works is that it dissolves
the minerals in borewater. It teases the minerals apart
after the water has been underground for a long time
and minerals have accumulated to high levels and have
found each other, explains Moore. Equilibrated minerals in the groundwater interact with each other and are
poised to precipitate and cause trouble once reaching
the surface. As well as causing pipe blockages, dripper
and spray blockages, these minerals also cause crusts
to form around plant roots, depriving them of water.
Moore continues, By breaking up the minerals in water,
we dissolve scale and soil crusts, and free plant roots to
take up the water that they desperately need.
Clients of the company expect a high level of commitment to backup support, ongoing advice, and hydrological knowledge. Hydrosmart staff provides this service by
phone and email. Local customers also drop in occasionally to discuss their successes. Here, Hydrosmart shares
agronomistBrett Irvines extract from Agronomic comment on Hydrosmart for Growing Grapes 2014.
There are just two table grape vineyards located in the
vicinity of the western Queensland town of Cunnamulla and they are side by side and irrigate from the same
point from the Warrego River. They are predominantly
growing the Menindee seedless variety with the same
rootstock, trellis design and drip irrigation system. During regular farm visits to the region in February 2013,
I noticed a rapid deterioration in the vine health on
both vineyards. Tests on the Warrego River water quality showed EC of 2600 but the most dramatic issue appeared to be the high sodium carbonates and bi-carbonates similarly emanating from river and bore water
sources. Upon seeing this I advised both vineyard owners to consider installing a Hydrosmart unit to treat their
water used for foliar spray applications and irrigation.

J Biggs farm, Cunnamulla

One of the owners was in a position to do so rapidly and

installed it in such a way to enable treatment of both the
bore and river water being added to a new farm storage dam. On farm, results were startling over the season
on J Biggs, (manager, Matilda Made Fruit Company at
Cunnamulla since 1997), vineyard using the Hydrosmart
when compared with the other vineyard: carbonate deposits on valves, hydraulic tubing and the drippers reduced significantly, and vines maintained a full growing
canopy. Poorer canopy growth on the untreated farm
lead to the application of nearly 2.5 times the irrigation
water. The untreated farm suffered heavily from bunch
stem necrosis and lost considerable (30+%) fruit. Hydrosmart offers a cost effective means of limiting the
damage caused to farms by drought induced low water
quality. It assists greatly in maintaining the crop and infrastructure in a commercially viable state.

Valmont Irrigation:
New Drop Hose Docking Stations
Valmont Irrigation is offering a new sprinkler application option for growers who rotate crops of varying
heights. AquaDock drop hose docking stations support two ground clearances in one drop hose assembly. Growers can easily change the drop hose height
from the ground using a lift pole to place the sprinkler

head into the docking station. This new product was

designed to provide a convenient way to change drop
hose length and to improve crop production, said Dale
Shelton, a Pasco, Washington, USA, grower who holds
the patent on AquaDock. With traditional drop hoses,
we noticed dry rings in the corn crops; causing uneven
crop growth and yield, Shelton said. Using the AquaDock has allowed us to eliminate those dry rings and
apply fertilizer evenly to produce uniform crop growth
and yields in our fields. Wrapping hoses used to take a
lot of time. Now we can hang the hoses in a fraction of
the time while keeping our irrigators on the ground.
AquaDock allows growers to tailor water application to
varying crop clearances without compromising uniformity or efficiency two essential elements in yield and
profit, said Jerry Gerdes, product manager for water application at Valmont Irrigation. AquaDock maintains
a high level of uniformity when growing high crops,
Gerdes said. If the drops are left low, they can drag
through the plants causing dry rings, which can affect
yield. AquaDock is available for new machines and for
retrofitting existing pivots.

Siphon Effect on Designing & Operating

Force Main Lines in Huge Pumping Systems

ne of the common mistakes in designing force main lines is not considering siphon effect on operation and protection of pumping
systems. In many projects, force main lines are subjected to sever siphons that damage force main lines during filling time or normal
operating conditions. Unfortunately, we blame pipeline manufactures for such failure and no one knows the exact reasons. This paper
discusses the theoretical background and practical examples and solutions of such an important destructive phenomena caused by the
nature of pipe profile, eventually causing pumping failure in many projects. An engineer should be aware of the fundamentals of hydraulics
mechanics and should have practical experience of being familiar with such natural phenomena to be able to put the right solution and
design for such complicated systems. This phenomena is causing power limitations and cavitation on operating pumps, not only reducing its
performance but more important reducing overall pumping enhancement and has its sever influence on protection systems.
Theoretical background
A siphoned force main line is extended from the main
pump station at location a with distance zero, and water level at suction tank of x meters to destination tank
of water level at y meters and extended at almost L KM
in length. The force main line is divided into two sections,
the first reaches its max. Elevation of Z meters meters at
L1 meters length is considered ascending force main line
section. Force main line started to drop dramatically after
its max. Elevation of Z meters descends until it reaches
destination tank at L distance and Y meters water level
with relatively small elevation difference from pump station at a location. Due to the fact that the static head is
very small in relation with the max, and an elevation of
force main line at L1 distance in meters, a sever siphon is
created & care has to be taken to control not only the selection and operation of required pumps, but also the estimation of force main diameters at different sections.
In order to understand the above problem, we need to
know how to estimate the required head on the above
system that represents our case. In a simple and logic way,
the total pump head can be estimated as follows:
Total pump head = H static (y-x) + ascending head (z-x) descending head (y-z) (-ve due to gravity) + hfL in ascending line + hfL in descending line.
Eliminating the equal ascending and descending heads
(z-y) & (y-z) from the equation, we find out that the total
head only depends on the Static head difference between
the two tanks & friction losses across the hall pipe length.
Therefore pipe profile doesnt affect the required head of
operating pumps on steady state conditions.
In another precise way, whenever the elevation across the
pipe profile reaches any lower or higher elevation, the required pumping monomeric head on the system wont
be affected. In fact, the latter is very difficult in our case
because the elevated highest point z at distance L1 is far
from the delivery point y which will create a very sever
siphon during normal operating conditions that will definitely damage the force main line based on amount of sub
pressure at highest point.
If the pipe material can overcome small siphons, air valves
should be eliminated or carefully selected to brake such siphons & could be installed with the proper type in case we

succeed in elevating HGL and preventing its intersection

with pipe profile, as entering air to the system shall reduce
flow rate & siphon will be worse as HGL will fall down and
power limitations on operating pumps will cause pump
trip and water hammer waves. Not to mention that the
pump trips, due to pumping two phase flow of water mixture with air, require almost 7 times the power required for
pumping the same volume of water.
Available solutions for the above siphon problems
1- Installing pressure sustaining valve at the end of force
main line, which can elevate HGL and prevent its intersection with pipe profile. This solution is a part of the final solution as pressure differential through the valve depends
on limits of vibration and manufacture limitations of
evaporation across such control valves. Attention is a must
when selecting such valve as any deviation of its calibration may result in destroying of force main line.
2- Siphon break chambers (open weir pit) which open
the pipe at siphon tip and convert the downstream pipe
to natural gravity line. (The above solution is good for
sewage and raw water lines as clear water can be polluted and needs to be protected; it also acquires land for
such reservoir).

21

industry spotlights

Borehole Pumps
and we are not able to determine the main reasons of
force main line failure in such cases as siphon appears during filling time and after sudden power failure and enters
huge amount of air to force main lines, which will be discussed in our case study of 10th of Ramadan raw intake
pumping system.

3- Reducing force main pipe diameter at downstream part

creating more friction losses by increasing fluid velocity, results in elevating HGL to safe reasonable levels. (Descending force main line diameter has to be reduced to
optimum value, resulting in elevating HGL in both steady
and transient conditions in addition to using proper types
of three stages air valves preventing sudden closing of
valves surge nozzles.)
4- Combination of last two solutions can be effective for
medium capacity force main lines; it results in reducing differential pressure across PSV and reaching desired performance of pumping systems. Not to mention that this solution is not applicable for distribution networks as pressure
sustaining cant be controlled because of the nature of the
bleeding points across force main lines.
5- Reducing invert levels of force main line at the tip of siphon area elevating HGL to safe operating condition. This
solution is costly and depends on the nature of the land
and extended length of siphon tip area and is difficult to
be maintained as special tunneling should be constructed
for huge pumping systems.
6- In many cases we find the destination tank water level
higher than the highest elevated area of force main lines

Case study: 10th of Ramadan raw intake force main line

pumping system conveying 7.2 m3/s through 2.5 meters pre-stressed force main line
10th of Ramadan raw intake force main line is extended
from main pump station at Ismailia canal of 9-11 meters
water level of suction tank, to destination tank of booster
pumping system of 68.15 meters water level of receivable tank and extended to almost 13.5 KM in length. The
force main line is divided into different sections, the first is
extended in normal slope until it reaches almost 18 meters static level at almost 4.4 KM and then extended in a
sharp slop until it reaches almost 60 meters static level at
10.0 KM and then extended horizontally until it reaches its
highest level at 64 meters at 12.0 KM, then goes down in
descending slope to reach 57 meters elevation at 12.5 KM
and finally reaches the destination tank of 68.15 meters.
The system does not only have a filling time siphon ve
pressure which reached its highest point to -6 meters WC
(at pipe bottom invert level), but also at startup of operating pumps after sudden power failure because of the
penetration of a huge volume of air during surge interval (great part of it will remain mixed with water, then
pumps experience a power failure), and lowering water level in destination tank because of the nature of its
feeding pipe and the leakage through the system during
power failure time.
We proposed a good solution for this system which calls
for replacing the last air valve chamber by a siphon break
chamber. The solution did not only resolve those problems, but also increased water flow across the system.

Water extraction pumps are often

subjected to challenging operating
conditions, particularly in respect
to the volume of the solid content
in the water being extracted. What
is needed is a robust pump capable
of withstanding abrasive wear. KSB
Aktiengesellschaft is meeting these
challenges with its UPA 250C submersible borehole pump range. KSBs
UPA series is intended for use in general water supply, irrigation, mining,
groundwater drawdown and management, fire-fighting and pressure
boosting applications. The pumps
have a maximum discharge head of
UPA 250C of 460m and a maximum
flow rate of 330m/h and depending
on the motor selected, fluid temperatures up to 50C can be handled.
Such is the robust design and construction of the UPA 250C pump; it
can be used for pumping water with
solids contents of up to 50g/m. A
patented sand separator protects the
pump against abrasive wear and the
pump's encapsulated bearings are
maintenance-free.
The operating reliability of the pump
is further increased by the use of a
check valve with anti-blockage valve
disc, and its integrated spring prevents water hammer due to the minimum closing time. This contributes to
protecting the entire well system and
all of its components. A wear-resistant

Efficient Irrigation Pumps

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi contains approximately
80,000 water wells, many of which are used for the
purpose of crop irrigation. Fresh water tables have
dropped by as much as 5 meters per year and are
now as deep as 400 meters requiring more powerful
pumps to draw water from the ground. With this depletion in water resources Abu Dhabi Food Control
Authority (ADFCA) has begun a re-education program that encourages the efficient use of water and
the maintenance of systems with an aim of extending
the life of groundwater reserves and reducing water
abstraction. For the purpose of the efficient irrigation of farms in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, ARJ Water
Technology supplied efficient Lowara Z series 6

Investments in Non-Oil and Gas Segment

to Drive the Demand for Compressors in MENA

he Middle East and North Africa (MENA) features amongst the fast-growing regions in the world second to Asia Pacific. While the oil
and gas industry has been the key contributor to the regions development, the local governments unified vision towards diversification
beyond the traditional limits and foray into the non-oil and gas has been paying rich dividends. Manufacturing and extended downstream
activities have been continuously invested in to ensure sustenance on the growth path. Economic growth, coupled with a growing populace, has
led to substantial increase in the regions inherent energy/infrastructure requirements. The power and industrial infrastructure has witnessed
a massive upgrade followed by significant investments. Barring disputes arising out of sectarian divides and political situations, the region
is largely destined to establish itself as an economic superpower over the next decade. Demand for equipment is a natural consequence of
industrial growth. Rotating equipment, a critical machinery of any industrial setup, of which compressors are an essential part, continues to
witness installations in the region.
As per Frost & Sullivan estimates, 2012 revenues for
the compressors market in MENA were more than
USD1,600 million, and the same has grown at a healthy
rate (more than 7.0 percent). The market for Centrifugal
Compressors during this period was estimated at more
than USD1,080 million while that of Positive Displacement (PD) compressors was in excess of USD520 million. Overall, the MENA market for compressors is forecast to become a more than USD2,000 million-opportunity by 2016. Frost & Sullivans research on PD (includes
Reciprocating and Rotary Screw Compressors) and
Centrifugal Compressors market suggests that a paradigm shift is likely to take place, with the emergence of
non-oil and gas segment as a primary demand driver.

While there is minimal value addition (engineering) locally, supplier investments targeting manufacturing/
assembly operations in the region are being explored.
Traditionally, compressor installations in the MENA
were dominated by American and European vendors.
However, the penetration of Asian (mainly Korean) Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors resulted in greater acceptance of compressors
from their respective countries, intensifying competition in the MENA compressors market.
In the short term, resurgence of industries across the region is expected to create opportunities for established
and new market entrants. However, given the dynamic
nature of this region, compressor suppliers planning
to expand or enter the MENA market might need to
periodically reexamine their strategies in accordance
with changing regional dynamics in order to maintain

Growing Market and Intensifying Competition

Given that the predominant demand for compressors is
from the oil and gas industry, most of the global manufacturers who cater to this industry are present in the

MENA. Major manufacturers, specializing in customized

engineering solutions and having robust product portfolios, cater to most of the high-value projects (especially, oil and gas) and those involving compressors for
critical process requirements.
As is the case globally, major multi-national corporations like General Electric (GE), Siemens, Atlas Copco, Elliott Group, and Dresser-Rand also dominate the MENA
market for compressors. These companies have gradually built up extensive solution portfolios suiting local
requirements, and their presence in the MENA spans
across pre-sales and sales support, marketing, and comprehensive after-sales support.

can be a key decisive factor.
Saudi Arabia will continue to be the biggest market
for compressors
Being one of the biggest markets in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)
continues to attract various compressor manufacturers.
It even encourages suppliers to set up local manufacturing or assembly facilities in order to tap into this market. The sheer size of the economy, diversified nature
of industrial projects, and with a stable business environment, the demand for compressors is likely to stay
healthy. While demand from the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) is likely to be sustained, Qatar and Kuwait remain
markets with massive potential, which may or may not
be realized in the near future. State policies on various
aspects of the oil and gas industry are the main reasons
for tempered market growth in these countries.

cal uncertainty, and the sectarian crisis experienced by

countries such as Iran, Iraq, Egypt, and Libya, which otherwise offer a huge potential, will be key in determining the progress of these economies. The demand for
compressors will be commensurate to the investments
being realized.
Investments in the non-oil and gas sector will drive
the demand for compressors
In spite of the flagging number of large-scale Greenfield projects (especially in the past five to six years) in
the oil and gas industry, demand from this segment is
likely to continue accounting for the maximum market
revenues. This is due to the substantial requirement of
compressors as an integral part of the upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas industry.
Massive investments continue in the power and water
segment, catering to the requirements associated with
burgeoning population and rapid industrialization.
The segment is likely to emerge as the second biggest
source for compressor installations in the next four to
five years. Also, the continued expansion (current and

envisaged) of the petrochemicals, chemicals, and fertilizers sector, especially in the GCC, is expected to generate significant demand in the compressors market.
Additionally, there is a huge after-sales opportunity afforded by the large installed base, commissioned over decades. Exacting the requirements of compressors, which
thereby raise the overall cost through certifications, safety features, instrumentation requirements, diagnostics/
monitoring, etc., largely contribute to the revenues.
Effective tapping of aftermarket will hold key to
healthy margins
The replacement market is expected to be a substantial driver for the rotating equipment industry; as old
equipment undergoes overhaul, retrofits, part replacements, or complete substitution with improved technology is a common feature. Escalating energy requirements have necessitated the construction of gas-fired
plants that need compressors. Growth in non-oil and
gas-based projects such as petrochemicals, power, desalination, water and wastewater, infrastructure, and
metals and mining will increase the overall demand for
compressors, and moderately reduce the dependence
of compressor manufacturers on any specific industry.
Furthermore, this is should particularly benefit compressor manufacturers with a limited range of American
Petroleum Institute (API certified compressors in their
product portfolios. Non-oil and gas segment presents
significant opportunity for the installation of non-API
certified compressors. Meanwhile, factors such as the
rising average price of oil continue to encourage additional investment in capital-intensive exploration and
production activities, as well as value-added processing and refining.
Possible growth impediments in the long term included reduced investments in the MENA projects due to
significant build-up of regional overcapacity, discovery
of major oil and gas sources in other countries (major
gas finds in the US, investment in shale gas, deep-sea oil
production, and others) as well as the growing impetus
world over to develop renewable energy sources. Also,
countries in the region are in a state of political uncertainty and unhealthy contagion. Political tensions over

succession in Saudi Arabia, sporadic political unrest in
Kuwait, global sanctions on Iran, economic imbalance
of Iraq, and the effects of the Arab spring in Bahrain, Jordan, and Lebanon, among others, has dampened investor sentiments. Political instability, along with a weak
global economy, has a diminishing effect on investor
confidence and end-user businesses, which is likely to
affect the compressors market. Investments targeted at
extending the downstream activity, and continued industrial diversification will be vital for sustaining the regions growth. Volatility in the global market for oil and
gas will have an impact the compressors market in the
short term.

ating unemployment and economic disparity, and the

need for economic diversification will be instrumental
in fuelling industrial growth. The outlook for PD and
Centrifugal Compressors market is optimistic, with a
moderate growth rate of around 7.5-9.0 percent from
2013 to 2016. The untapped potential for downstream
activity in countries such as the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and
Iraq, for various reasons (such as the moratorium on Gas
projects in the North Field, Qatar), provides opportunities for substantial growth in future. Additionally, new
modern cities in the MENA region, growing population,
increasing industrialization, and international mega
events (as planned in Qatar) will provide the next industrial boom for the compressors market.

Global Ultraviolet Disinfection Equipment Market

Shines with Growth Ahead

echNavios analysts forecast the global UV disinfection equipment market to grow at a CAGR of 12.7 percent over the period 2012-2016.
One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increased advantages of UV disinfection. The global UV disinfection
equipment market has also been witnessing an increase in industrialization. However, the development of electronic ballast could pose
a challenge to the growth of this market.

TechNavios report, the Global Ultraviolet Disinfection Equipment Market 2012-2016, has been prepared
based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from
industry experts. The report covers the market in the
Americas, and the APAC and EMEA regions; it also covers the global UV disinfection equipment market landscape and its growth prospects in the coming years.
The report also includes a discussion of the key vendors
operating in this market. The key vendors dominating
this space include Advanced UV Inc., GE Lighting LLC,
Severn Trent Services Inc., and Siemens AG.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavios
CleanTech team said: Industrialization is a process by
which agrarian-based societies seek social and economic growth by their transformation into industrial
societies. In industrial societies, the standard of living
and scale of production of various goods is high, thereby resulting in an increase in the supply and usage of
water. Moreover, the rapid industrialization worldwide
and the depleting water resources have resulted in a
huge demand for safe, usable water. For instance, the
F&B industries need huge quantities of water for their
manufacturing process; therefore such industries can
deplete the water supply in regions where they are situated. Similarly, the increase in the standard of living as
a result of the growing industrialization has led to the
use of consumer goods such as dishwashers, washing
machines, and jacuzzis. Since the water supply is insufficient to meet these growing demands, it becomes necessary for industries and the public to reuse and recycle
water with the help of UV disinfection equipment. Thus,
the rapid industrialization is expected to foster the demand and growth of the global UV disinfection equipment market.

Rapid
industrialization is
expected to
foster the
demand and
growth of the
global UV
disinfection
equipment
market

According to the report, one of the major drivers in this

market is the advantages of UV disinfection, particularly in its applications in the water industry. For instance,
water treatment methods that use chemicals are risky to
handle and create residues that are harmful to the environment. On the other hand, UV disinfection equipment
are easier to operate and do not involve the creation of
harmful residues.
Further, the report states that one of the major challenges
in this market is the development of electronic ballasts.
There are various mismatches between the perceived
and actual performance of electronic ballasts, which are
expected to have a negative impact on the growth of the
market during the forecast period.
The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including
inputs from key participants in the industry. The report
contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape
in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.

GoodlifeUVs Breakthrough in UV Systems

It is a known fact that any material submerged under
water for a few days attracts impurities (TSS, hardness, TDS, etc.) from the water leading to fouling of
the material surface. In conventional UV systems,
the Quartz sleeve is submerged under water, hence
within a few days the Quartz sleeve gets fouled and
this will render the UV system ineffective as the fouling and/or scale formation will not allow the UV
rays to effectively pass through the water. Therefore
the Quartz glass needs periodical cleaning either
manually or by installation of automatic wipers. Also,
the Quartz Glass is fragile and can lead to breakages while cleaning. Fouling inside conventional
UV systems is a major maintenance concern, which

GoodlifeUV system internal working

GoodlifeUV has successfully overcome. GoodlifeUV

systems use high percentage UV-C transmitting Advanced Fluoropolymer (AF) tubes, instead of Quartz
Glass, through which water is passed. AF tubes have
non-fouling characteristic, so no impurities/salt stick
to the surface of the tubes. Hence, there are no fouling issues, no periodic cleaning requirements, and no
issues of breakages. This provides consistent disinfection results. GoodlifeUV offers a complete range of
ultraviolet water disinfection systems, with expertise
in developing high flow UV systems, and custom built
systems based on specific client requirements. The
systems have been successfully performing in many
wastewater and seawater plants. All GoodlifeUV systems products are designed to maximize results and
minimize operation and maintenance cost.

Energy Efficient Ozone Oxidation Systems

Xylem Inc. has launched a new, more energy efficient
and virtually maintenance free generation of its Wedeco
SMOevo and PDOevo ozone oxidation systems. These
systems now use Effizon evo 2G, a new, uniquely designed and robust electrode technology. The Effizon evo
2G electrode delivers up to 25 percent more energy efficient ozone production operates at very high cooling
water temperatures and is able to provide extraordinarily
high ozone concentrations of up to 21 weight percent

(wt%) for oxygen systems. The next generation Effizon

evo 2G electrodes produce ozone from oxygen or air using a unique Wedeco double-discharge gap technology.
Ozone is formed on both sides of the dielectric, which
increases ozone production due to lower power density
and more effective cooling. The electrodes are manufactured from inert materials making them highly resistant
to corrosion and practically maintenance free. The electrodes typically do not require any regular replacement
or cleaning. Moreover, the distinctive Wedeco electrode
also features an increased surface area providing superior cooling properties that enhance ozone production
efficiency. The Effizon evo 2G electrodes are also offered
with a standard, ten-year warranty. These Wedeco systems have the highest tolerances to hydrocarbon impurities in the feed gas used to convert oxygen to ozone,
providing customers with efficient ozone production
and at the same time, a wide selection when choosing
oxygen suppliers. In addition, SMOevo and PDOevo systems with Effizon evo 2G electrode technology operate
efficiently, even at very high water cooling temperatures
of up to 35 degrees Celsius, and also at high ozone concentrations for oxygen and air feed gas.

Removing SRBs for Offshore Oil & Gas

UV disinfection, supplemented by periodic shock
dosing using chemical biocides is perfectly suited to
down-hole injection applications, and has proved to
be both a cost effective and highly efficient method
of removing harmful microorganisms such as SRB's
(Sulphate Reducing Bacteria) from water sources. A
correctly sized UV system such as the featured ATG UV
disinfection package dramatically reduces the amount
and frequency of chemical dosing and vastly reduces
the associated handling/transportation costs. Estimated savings for a SRB treatment application such
as down-hole injection switching to UV treatment are
substantial in chemical biocide cost savings alone. The
system is highly compact and easy to operate. All the
equipment was installed within a custom made, 20ft
offshore rated shipping container and the design utilizes an inline configuration that makes it easy to install
into restricted space. Furthermore the systems are fully
automatic and unlike traditional chemical treatments,
cannot be overdosed and do not increase the toxicity
of the water with harmful biocides. Whilst occasional
shock dosing with chemicals is still needed, this does
not require the complex monitoring equipment that
would be necessary if biocides were used as a primary
disinfectant for everyday operation. ATG UV TechnoloArab Water World (AWW)

GE to Recycle up to 98 Percent of
Produced Water at Italian Oil Field

he crude oil production site at the Tempa Rossa oil field in Corleto Perticara, in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, will use GEs
advanced evaporator and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology to recycle up to 98 percent of produced water. Total E&P Italia
S.p.A. has six wells in the Tempa Rossa oil field, and GE will provide the technology to engineering, procurement and construction
(EPC) contractor Maire Tecnimont S.p.A, which is overseeing the development of the project for Total E&P Italia.

As one of the most important oil fields in Italy, the

Tempa Rossa project, along with the nearby Val dAgri
oil field, will create enough oil to meet approximately
10 percent of Italian oil needs. The execution of the
work will comply with the most severe requirements
in terms of health, safety and environment for a facility of this nature in Italy. The Tempa Rossa oil field
needed an innovative and energy-efficient solution to
treat the water and meet stringent discharge regulations, and GEs technology was deemed the best technology for recycling water at this facility.
The project marks the first application of GE-produced water treatment in Europe, leveraging on GEs
wide experience in produced water treatment in Canada, the United States and Australia. When producing
crude oil, the water that is pumped as a byproduct
called produced water. Oil wells can produce enormous quantities of water, and this produced water
needs to be treated or hauled away from the site. At
the Tempa Rossa oil field, GEs ZLD crystallizers will
demineralize the produced water, which will be available for firefighting. The remaining brine will be concentrated into solid salt crystals for disposal. The ZLD
technology will enable Maire Tecnimont S.p.A to meet
new national environmental regulations governing
water discharge.
Italy had become increasingly dependent on oil and
natural gas imports. New oil fields, such as Tempa
Rossa, will enable Italy to become less reliant on imports, improving the export/import commercial balance. Once fully operational in 2016, Total E&P Italias
six wells in Tempa Rossa will have a daily production
capacity of approximately 50,000 barrels of crude oil,
230,000 m of natural gas, 240 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 80 tons of sulfur.

The Arsenic Issue in Drinking Water

Throughout history arsenic has been used as a poison
and even today, arsenic continues to poison millions of
peoples worldwide. The element occurs naturally in the
soil and can enter the water supply easily. Natural groundwaters contain predominantly As (III), due to high reducing conditions. In natural surface waters, As (V) is the
dominant species. The WHO organization advices a maximum concentration of 10 ppb. Although arsenic can be
found in surface water, groundwater is the main source of
arsenic in water. In groundwater arsenic exists as waterinsoluble inorganic forms, i.e. As (V) or As (III) anions, depending upon the pH. Generally, a concentration of As
above 10 ppb can be found naturally in groundwater. For
example in Bangladesh, the groundwater concentrations
of arsenic may exceed 100 ppb on some locations.
The arsenic has short and long-term health effects, such
as: stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, skin lesions, convulsions, low blood pressure, vomiting, pigmentation,

gastrointestinal problems, bladder cancer, gangrene,

immunological disorders, skin cancer, limb loss, endocrine disorders, kidney cancer, keratosis, hematological
disorders, liver cancer, neurological effects, reproductive
problems, etc.
Today, an increasing number of municipal water supplies
have been found contaminated by Arsenic in a lot of cities
spread across industrialized countries (e.g. Europe, USA,
Canada), which in turn increases the public debate concerning the Arsenic issue and the consequences to the
human-health. Consequently, the major water regulation
authorities and safety authorities (e.g. EPA, ARPAM etc.)
are now increasing the control of the municipal water
supply and putting in force measures to try to reduce the
Arsenic contamination from drinking water.
Arsenic can be removed from drinking water in various
ways, by using the following techniques:
Precipitative processes, including coagulation/filtration
(C/F), direct filtration, coagulation assisted microfiltra
tion, enhanced coagulation, lime softening (LS), and en
hanced lime softening
Adsorption processes, specifically activated alu
mina (AA)
Ion exchange (IX) processes, specifically anion exchange
Membrane filtration, including reverse osmosis (RO),
and electrodialysis reversal (EDR)
The As-V can be better removed than As-III. As-III can be
removed when it is pre-oxidized to As-V. OSMO SISTEMI
has developed a vast experience in the design, construction and follow up of Arsenic Removal Plants. These developed systems are designed, fabricated and serviced to
empower water treatment decision-makers or end users
to have the necessary tools to achieve their objectives,
first technical and finally economic benefits.

Studying the Available Data of the Wazzani Spring

Encased between Rachaya and yammouneh faults, which form the western north limit of the Arabic plate, lies the Wazzani plain that is
crossed by a small river the Hasbani. From this river, the Artesian Wazzani spring arises and is surrounded by a Basaltic land. The basalt
magma that reached the surface through the faults and cracks encrusted in the Hasbani bed and covered the Cretaceous land. In this
small area, there are different kinds of rocks, aged from the oldest the Jurassic to the recent quaternary soil. Being open to the sea, the area
receives a large amount of rainwater per year estimated around 800 to 1000 millimeters, excluding snow water. The sketch in the article
shows the result of the compressed water of Wazzani spring that drilled and removed the Cenomanian calcareous roof and the basaltic cover
for millions of years. According to Alain Guerre (1973), Fluoresceine that was injected in the upper Jurassic (Aiha village) located north of
Wazzani, appears in the Jurassic spring of Chebaa and in Wazzani inside middle cretaceous. The passage from Jurassic karstic aquifer to the
karstic cretaceous aquifer through faults in the impermeable layers of lower cretaceous was shown. The hydrogeological map of Lebanon
(published by UNDP, Lebanon Groundwater report- New York -1970) shows the injection and the appearance places of Fluoresceine trace in
Jurassic and Cretaceous karstic springs.

Protecting Underground
Water
The Lebanese Ministry of Water
has put forward in 2012 a Technical Control mechanism by which
every citizen wishing to exploit
his eventual underground water
has to pass by. It consists of creating a technical barrier aiming
to limit over exploitation by water wells (less than 150m deep).
A well dug for agricultural use
For this purpose, the Ministry
qualified several internationally recognized Third Party Inspection offices (TPI), among them is the French company
Apave. The job of these companies is: Step 1: the citizen
has to provide them with all necessary documents and
proofs needed for such endeavor according to the Ministry by laws in this field. Step 2: the TPI conducts a first
inspection visit to the site and issues a first report expressing possibilities of influence of such projected works on
neighboring systems. Step 3: the Ministry delivers or does
not deliver a well permit. Step 4: in case of permit delivery,
work inspection is carried out periodically by the TPI.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Monitors Greenhouse Gas Emissions

lobally, little attention is paid to gaseous emissions from wastewater treatment processes. This contrasts greatly with the regulatory
monitoring that is applied to the quality of water emissions from such facilities. However, in Helsinki, Finland, a large municipal
wastewater treatment facility continuously monitors its emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to help in the citys efforts to
combat climate change and also improve the wastewater treatment process. Employing a multigas FTIR (Fourier Transform InfraRed)
analyzer from Gasmet, a Helsinki-based manufacturer of analytical instrumentation, the plants managers are able to measure the
effects of process control on GHG emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. This also provides an insight into the fate
of nitrogenous compounds within the wastewater stream.

Background
The Viikinmki wastewater treatment plant was built
in 1994 to process wastewater from both domestic
(85%) and industrial (15%) sources. However, the average temperature in Helsinki between December and
February is around minus 4 degrees Celsius, with extremes below minus 20 and even minus 30 degrees
Celsius, so the plant was built almost entirely underground to avoid the freezing temperatures. Underground construction is common practice in the Nordic
countries, providing other advantages such as land
availability above the plant and the provision of stable
conditions for process control and odor management.
The Viikinmki plant is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Finland, handling approximately
270,000 m of wastewater per day, which amounts
to about 100 million m per year. The wastewater is
treated in compliance with the Finnish Wastewater
Discharge Permit, which is stricter than the EU Water
Framework Directive for parameters such as nitrogen
removal, phosphate content, BOD, COD and suspended solids. Following treatment, the purified / treated

wastewater is conveyed 8km out to sea and to a depth

of over 20m. This might seem superfluous, but the 16
km long discharge pipe was built in the 1980s and was
designed to ensure that discharged wastewater did
not accumulate on the shallow and scattered shore
and nature reserves along the coastline of Helsinki.

The treatment process is based on the activated

sludge method and includes three phases: mechanical, biological and chemical treatment. Traditional nitrogen removal has been enhanced with a biological
filter that utilizes denitrification bacteria.
The organic matter contained in the sludge produced
in the wastewater treatment process is exploited by
digesting the sludge, and the biogas generated in the
digestion process is collected for further use. Thanks
to the energy produced from biogas, the treatment
plant is self-sufficient in terms of heating and about 70
percent self-sufficient in terms of electricity. However,
the plant aims to be fully energy self-sufficient in the
near future, and around 60,000 tonnes of dried waste
sludge is sold each year for landscaping purposes.
Gas monitoring
As a result of the size of the plant (E-PRTR reporting)
and the commitment of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) to the protection of
the environment, it was necessary to monitor or model gaseous emissions. At the beginning of the E-PRTR
reporting requirements (2007) HSY modeled the annual gaseous emissions based on grab samples. However, monitoring was relatively simple to implement
because the plant is enclosed underground and a gas
exhaust system was already in place.
Initially, a portable FTIR analyzer from Gasmet was
hired for a short period to assess the plants emissions
and for research purposes. However, as Mari Heinonen,
Process Manager at Viikinmki, reports: The gas emissions data were very interesting but they were not
representative of the annual emissions, and posed
more questions than they answered. We therefore
purchased a continuous emissions monitoring system
June 2014 / Vol. XXXVII Issue 6

(CEMS) from Gasmet, which was installed in late 2012
and we now have our first full years data for 2013. Very
little data has been published on the GHG emissions
of wastewater treatment and as far as we are aware,
Viikinmki is the only plant in the world conducting
this type of monitoring, so our data is likely to be of
major significance.
The Gasmet CEMS employs an FTIR spectrometer to
obtain infrared spectra from the waste gas stream by
first collecting an interferogram of the sample signal
with an interferometer, which measures all infrared
frequencies simultaneously to produce a spectrum
from which qualitative and quantitative data are produced. For example, the CEMS at Viikinmki continuously displays emissions data for CH4, N2O, CO2, NO,
NO2, and NH3.
Over a number of years, Gasmet has established a library of FTIR reference spectra that now extends to
simultaneous quantification of 50 gases or identification of unknowns from a collection of 5000+ gases. This
means that it is possible to reanalyze produced spectra
with the instruments PC based software (Calcmet) and
thereby to identify unknown gases a major advantage of FTIR. Whilst FTIR is able to analyze an enormous
number of gases, the technique is not suitable for noble
gases, homonuclear diatomic gases (e.g., N2, Cl2, H2,
F2, etc.) or H2S (detection limit too high).
Gasmet FTIR technology was chosen for the Viikinmki
plant because of its ability to monitor multiple gases
simultaneously. However Heinonen says: The system
has performed very well, with very little maintenance
required. Zero point calibration with nitrogen (background) just takes a few minutes each day and is fully
automated. Water vapor calibration is conducted at
least once per year, but under normal circumstances
no other calibration is necessary. With the benefit of
the monitoring data, Heinonen has calculated the annual emissions for methane to be around 350 tonnes,
and for nitrous oxide around 134 tonnes. This means
that the emissions per cubic meter of wastewater
equate to 3.5g of methane and 1.34g of nitrous oxide.

process control: Traditional monitoring/control systems focus on concentrations of oxygen, nitrate and
ammonia in the water, but if we detect high levels of
N2O gas for example, this may indicate a problem in
the process that we can use as a feedback control. The
monitoring data for gaseous nitrogen compounds
(N2O, NH3, NOx) complements water analysis and provides a more complete picture of the nitrogen cycle
in the treatment process. Clearly, further research will
be required, but this work may indicate a need to consider the fate of nitrogenous compounds beyond just
those in the wastewater; the removal of nitrogen from
wastewater is a key objective, but if this results in high
N2O emissions the process may need to be managed
in a different way.

Rapid Detection of Psaudomonas Aeruginosa

Colifast AS is a Norwegian biotechnology company
and a specialist in the development and delivery of
automated instruments for detection of fecal contamination. The Colifast technology has been in the
market since 1992 and is used to monitor water and
food quality in order to protect public health and

the environment. The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa Test enables rapid detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in water samples down to the level
of 1 cfu per sample volume (100-250 ml). Sample
preparation is done by the membrane filtration (MF)
technique or by direct addition of water sample
(higher levels). The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa test can be combined with all Colifast analyzers or be used as a simple basic test. The detection
is based on bacterial growth and the activity of specific enzymes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.
This specific activity produces fluorescence which
is detected by the Colifast analyzers providing Presence/Absence results. Semi-quantitative information
can be obtained by determining the Time To Detect
(TTD), when fluorescence intensity reaches a certain
threshold. The test was a part of an EU project, EC
framework 5, which stated a sensitivity and specificity of 99% and 100%, respectively and a 10-16/18
hour detection time for Pseudomonas aeruginosa
(1-20 CFU/100 ml). The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa test can be used for HACCP testing under
non-sterile conditions, at site without any laboratory
facilities. The rapid results shorten the time to make
decisions. Typical applications are bottled water,
swimming pools and Jacuzzis.

VACON 100 FLOW Improves Water Pumping

KRS-Vesi is responsible for water supply in the Kristinestad area on the west coast of Finland. Controlling
the pumps with VACON 100 FLOW AC drives results in
an even flow and reduces pressure spikes in the pipes.
KRS-Vesi saw that modernization was necessary at their
Friiveli booster station and Osvald waste water pumping station. After modernization, each of the pumps is
controlled by a VACON 100 FLOW drive, thus replacing
the more conventional AC drive-contactor-combination

FLOW has dedicated functions that benefit flow control
processes. It provides multi-pump functions as standard,
which improve reliability and efficiency. Communicating with each other via a Modbus RTU communications
protocol, the drives are able to judge how many pumps
are needed at any particular time and at what speed the
pumps should operate and notice if there is a fault in
one of the motors, pumps or AC drives. If the demand

Metito & Zulekha Hospital Join Forces

Arab Water World (AWW) Magazine had attended the
ceremony of signing the agreement between Metito
represented by its CEO Mutaz Ghandour and Zulekha
Hospital, represented by Dr. Zulekha DAUD, Managing
Director. The ceremony had taken place in the auditorium hall of Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah, UAE on 28th of
April 2014. On this occasion, AWWs representative in
UAE Fouad Hammad had the opportunity to meet Rami
Ghandour, Managing Director of Metito and Zanubia
Shams, CEO at Zulekha Healthcare Group of Zulekha
Hospital, to get more details on these charitable associated activities between the two companies to achieve
drinkable water for some schools in India.

Ghandour has pointed out that Metito had been always associated with such humanitarian projects to
help people in the third world countries to have access to pure drinkable water. This time we are happy
to be associated with Zulekha hospital in the UAE to
perform together a project in Nagpur village in India
where Metito will provide four schools with necessary
installations and plants to have access to pure drinking
water for the students. Metito had already realized several projects in India where it has 7 offices in various
cities, said Ghandour.
From her side, Shams informed AWW that Zulekha
Hospital used to perform such charitable activities in
India during the past years, and this time they choose
Nagpur village in Maharashtra State as Dr. Zulekha
comes from that village in India, where she had lived
and studied before coming to the UAE and founded
Zulekha Hospital. Its a significant gesture for us to
help students in this village to get pure drinking water in association and assistance of Metito, who have
shown lot of interest to be our partner in this charitable project and promise achieving the plant in a
short period of time to provide safe drinking water for
30,000 people in the city, said Shams.

Water Risk Information: Available for Financial

Professionals Worldwide
The World Resources Institute (WRI) announced
the integration of the WRI Aqueduct Overall Water
Risk map with Bloombergs interactive mapping platform, BMAP. It is available to the more than 320,000
subscribers of the Bloomberg Professional service. Integrating Aqueduct with Bloombergs BMAP tool will
give influential decision makers access to the worlds
most comprehensive, detailed global water-risk information alongside Bloombergs proprietary visual com-

modities data. Water is essential for all life. It gives

us the energy, food, and economic growth we need.
But we face a growing freshwater crisis -- impacts
from water-related risks have already cost ecosystems,
communities, and businesses untold billions, Betsy
Otto, director of WRIs Water Initiative, said. More and
more organizations are recognizing this reality and
taking action to reduce their water-related risks. Aqueduct provides the most current, comprehensive,
and high-resolution (15,000 sub-basins) global water
risk mapping tool available. Aqueducts overall water
risk map, the layer incorporated into BMAP, heat maps
water risk calculated by using indicators that consider
how much water may be available in a given location,
the general quality of that water, and what potential
regulatory and reputational risks are associated with
a site. Demand is projected to increase in the coming years and decades for limited, unpredictable, and
often polluted water resources especially among
businesses so the need for water risk mapping and
mitigation will likely grow.

NWWC: The Right Pumping Solution

he need for sustainable water solutions is pushing industry specialists to give out proper answers to help customers during tough
times. National Water Works Co. (NWWC) stands out with innovative pump solutions on the water market. Arab Water World
(AWW) Magazine had the chance to meet NWWCs Chief Executive Engineer Essam Zahra to garner an elaborated perspective on
the companys effective role in the water industry.

Q. Would you please provide a general overview of

NWWCs history, and tell us and where are its offices located?
Essam Zahra: NWWC was established in 2000 as a Water Works Division at Saudi Mechanical Industries (SMI
Founded 1982) to carry out all Electromechanical Contracting Sales activities, produces pumps that are tailored to the Middle East regions environment and can
efficiently pump water from the deepest wells. In 2008
it was decided to initiate a strategic cooperation agreement with Abdullah Naser Al-Mousa Group that has
several branches and warehouses in different areas of
the kingdom and a wealth of equipment, parts, motors, and pumps. The Mousa Group added a trading
dimension to the new emerging company capitalizing
on Al-Mousa Group reputation and expertise in importing and trading equipment for over 40 years. We
supplied quality of engineering supply, contracting of
all required water, waste water and electromechanical
equipment supported by worldwide manufacturer of
high quality products from Saudi Arabia, Asia, Europe
and USA. We have 8 branches throughout the Kingdom and 2 sales offices.

the customer requirements, then we feed our partners of pump manufacturers with all data and suggestions to change the design of the pumps to meet
the customers need which will automatically lead
to the right pumping solution. In addition, NWWC
always is on the hotline with its partners for any new
market needs. This pushes our partners to involve in
the market needs which leads to improving their industries accordingly.

Q. How do you see the current market for pumps, especially in the Middle East & North Africa?

Q. What were your main projects during 2013 and the

first half of 2014, and on what basis did you undertake them?

Zahra: Water pumping is one of the main sensitive issues in the MENA region, all of this regions countries
suffered the lack of water resources, so the governments did their plans in order to face this lack and
secure the resources, even by digging wells to get
ground water, constructing dams or by constructing sea water desalination plants, so in the coming
decade the pumps will be badly needed and much
more than previous years. The construction market is
very strong in MENA countries as well, so the requirement of pumps is needed as well, to serve the high
rate of water demand for all types of uses; eventually
the pumps market in the MENA region will be much
stronger than before.

Zahra: NWWC served customers in Saudi Arabia; National Water Company and the Ministry of Water
and Electricity are the main customers that NWWC
concentrate its efforts on, as they control water pumping and distribution in the kingdom.
In 2013 NWWC finalized big projects for all water
utilities in the kingdom, but the company succeeded
in supplying and installing 45 submersible pumps
for Riyadh Water Supply Enhancement Project. This
project was a story of success as NWWC succeeded
to supply, install and operate this huge number of
special pumps professionally in a limited time.
In 2014 the company continued its support to its
customers and supplied, installed and operated six
submersible pumps for MAADEN Company at Hazm
Aljalameed. NWWC is still running many projects in
the kingdom.

Q. How did NWWC help the pump industrys evolution

process all through its different stages?
Zahra: As NWWCs scope is to present Totally Integrated Pumping Solution to its customers, we study

AIS Announces Major Sponsorship of WAHC 2014

As an Australian owned, award winning specialist in the
design, production and supply of commercial and residential water disinfection technology, it was a natural
choice for Australian Innovative Systems (AIS) to sign
up as the major sponsor of this years World Aquatic
Health Conference (WAHC) to be held from 17-18 July

on Queenslands Gold Coast. This years event will be the

first time that the WAHC has been held outside of the
United States of America. The conference will feature
world-renowned experts discussing the latest advances
in water science and technology, industry regulations
and risk management as well as exploring issues such as
safety and aquatic injuries along with water associated
illness caused by exposure to germs and chemicals. AIS
CEO Elena Gosse said, AIS is not just a manufacturer. We
are committed to ensuring that our industrys integrity
is maintained and to asking some of the hard questions,
such as, why are large aquatic facilities continuing to super-dose their pools with vast quantities of chlorine? As
a leader in the water disinfection industry it is important
that we raise topics such as refuting the old way of disinfecting water and to use facts and science to dismiss
claims made by some manufacturers that certain disinfection technologies are safe for commercial use or that
residential systems can be used in commercial facilities.
Events such as the WAHC help to highlight these issues
and continue to inspire companies such as AIS to innovate even further.

German Water Partnerships Annual

Conference 2014
On 24 June 2014, the RAMADA Hotel Berlin-Alexanderplatz will be the center of the German and international water branch. German Water Partnership
(GWP) invites for an annual conference with a political as well as a market-oriented technological character. One main subject will be the Market Offensive
Water with which GWP strives to position itself as a
partner of the German government, of export promotion and of development cooperation with regard to
the planned Export Initiative Environmental Technologies. A well thought-out and well-structured
Market Offensive Water can have two goals: Improving sustainability of water management and water
infrastructure worldwide and increasing German
export by 12 percent per year. These goals can be
achieved with the GWP network uniting capability
of innovation, quality, safety and sustainability, with
the focus on the needs of the metropolis in developing and newly industrialized countries and with a
Germany-specific business concept. Therefore it is essential to bring together both sides of the market in
an efficacious way and to draw up bespoke, creative

and sustainable system solutions and turn them into

practice. The detailed analysis of the target market
and the weaknesses of the German water market are
the effective methods as is a well-coordinated, targetoriented marketing strategy. Sustainable market analysis and permanent presence on the target markets
secures establishing German water know-how on a
long-term basis. An operative program ensures the
implementation of the system approach along with
the required solutions for financing and investment.
The annual conference starts with keynotes from the
Federal Ministries for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
and from the Indian embassy to Germany.

WWEM 2014 Exhibition Almost Full

ed the floor space considerably, says WWEM organizer
Marcus Pattison. In order to create the extra space,
we have moved the Conference into an adjacent Hall
with access via the Exhibition. WWEM 2014, the 6th in
a series of highly successful environmental monitoring
events, will return to the Telford International Centre in
the UK on the 5th and 6th November. The event will include conference speakers and exhibitors from all over
the world, providing delegates with access to a broad
selection of conference presentations, workshops and
demonstrations. The event will seek to provide delegates with the latest information on the techniques,
technologies, methods, standards and regulatory requirements that relate to the monitoring which takes
place both on-site and in the laboratory, covering
sampling, field analysis, gas detection and continuous
water and wastewater monitoring applications. WWEM
delegates include anyone with a professional interest
in environmental monitoring; including regulators, industrial process operators, water utilities, accreditation
organizations, commercial laboratories, instrument
manufacturers, consultants, analytical service providers, researchers and academics.

The exhibition that will run alongside WWEM 2014,

the international Water, Wastewater and Environmental Monitoring conference, is now almost fully booked
with just a handful of spaces remaining. As WWEM
2012 approached, we were forced to refuse the later
applications to exhibit, and it looks like this situation
will be repeated, despite the fact that we have expand-

wire 2014 und Tube 2014:

Strong Together for Future Markets
The upward trend continues: The more than 2,500 international exhibitors from the wire, cable and tube industries can look back on five successful trade fair days. Inspired by the upswing of the steel market, the exhibiting
companies presented their product innovations at the
Dsseldorf Exhibition Centre during the two trade fairs,
wire 2014 and Tube 2014. The trade fairs took place at

exactly the right time. Now several companies are planning on investing in order to position themselves for
continued competition, explained Joachim Schfer, Managing Director accountable for the fairs at Messe Dsseldorf. Once again, wire and Tube recorded exhibitor
growth as well as a significant increase in booked exhibition space, he continued with satisfaction.
Networked worldwide and globally active, the exhibitors
presented themselves to the 72,000 trade visitors that
travelled to the exhibition halls on the Rhine from 104
different countries. They came to learn about the latest
machines, equipment and products for the wire, cable
and tube processing industries at the innovative international trade fairs, wire International Wire and Cable
Trade Fair and Tube International Tube Trade Fair. As
world market leader in the steel tube industry with two
plants in Dsseldorf, we believe it was the right decision
to participate at Tube 2014 for the second time in a row
now after a long break, summarizes Norbert Keusen, CEO
of Vallourec Deutschland GmbH, quite satisfied after
five trade fair days.

ISK-SODEX: A Good Level of Orders &

A High-Caliber Trade Audience

Around 85,000 visitors from 83 countries came to Istanbul to view the latest innovations

When ISK-SODEX came to an end, the majority of exhibitors said they were very pleased with the caliber of
the visitors, their stands and the business generated.
From 7 to 10 May the Istanbul Expo Center provided
881 exhibitors with a perfect showcase for their products and services for heating, refrigeration, ventilation
and air-conditioning. Around 85,000 visitors from 83
countries came to Istanbul to view the latest innovations, engage in business talks, place orders and network with key players. Keen interest was shown in the
energy-saving and environment-friendly solutions featured in the shows eleven exhibition halls, which provided 53,535 square meters of exhibition space. POOL
EXPO, a trade fair for the swimming pool, sauna and
spa industry, ran concurrently to ISK-SODEX.

ISKID - the Turkish Association for Air Conditioning

and Refrigeration Manufacturers -also stressed the
importance of the trade fair for their sector: Our aim
is to provide people with ideal environmental conditions, be it temperature, humidity or fresh, clean air
and to achieve this using the most energy-efficient
means. This is the simplest and most cost-effective way
to combat climate change, clean up the air, reduce
energy costs to the consumer and set us apart from
our competitors. The Turkish HVAC sector aims to expand its export business to approx. USD25 billion by
2023. ISK-SODEX will play a major part in this process,
as it already serves as a meeting-place not only for the
regional sector but for the industry worldwide, says
ISKID chairperson Naci Sahin.

The trade fair took place in conjunction with the 11th

International HVAC+R Technology Symposium, which
was organized by the Turkish Society of HVAC and
Sanitary Engineers. Staged under the slogan Building
Tomorrow Today, the symposium also placed particular emphasis on energy-efficient solutions. By bringing the supply and demand sides together so effectively this year we were able once again to ensure the
successful outcome of ISK-SODEX. The Turkish market
continues to offer considerable potential for the entire sector. Not only is ISK-SODEX the third biggest
trade fair in the world and the biggest in the Eurasian
region for ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning technology, but the Congress also ranks as one of
the leading events of its kind in Europe, explains Murat Demirtas, General Manager of Hannover-Messe
Sodeks Fuarcilik.

The importance of the Turkish market for international

players in the HVAC+R industry is highlighted by American exhibitor Duro Dyne Corporation, based in New
York. According to Caio Tadeu Brandao, Director of International Sales at the company, Turkey is an important partner in this sector, both as a manufacturer and
a distributor of imported products. The Turkish construction sector attracts many international companies
who work with distributors in Turkey. There are many
good market opportunities here, as Turkish construction companies also operate in neighboring countries.
We are the biggest manufacturer and supplier of parts
and accessories to the HVAC+R industry across the
world. We have operated in the US for 62 years and for
more than 40 years in the international marketplacenow we want to gain a foothold in Turkey, too. ISK-SODEX is the ideal platform for this purpose.

DEWA: Impressive
Reduction in Demand
For Energy & Water
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has achieved
considerable success in reducing the demand for energy and
water in Dubai through wide a series of initiatives to meet
the goals of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030
launched by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to reduce
energy demand by 30% in 2030. DEWA has succeeded in reducing annual per capita consumption of electricity to 15,346
kW in 2013 compared with 16,022 kW in 2010, while the annual per capita consumption rate of water reduced to 40,777
gallons in 2013 compared with 44,631 gallons in 2010.

In line with our goal to become a Sustainable World-Class

Utility, we at DEWA work to achieve the Green Economy for
Sustainable Development initiative launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime
Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. According to the Dubai
Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, achieving energy efficiency
is fundamental to reducing energy demand. This will help to
reduce our reliance on natural resources, reduce our carbon
footprint and protect the environment. We can build on this
in the short- to medium term and realize the results in the
long-term, and for generations to come, added Al Tayer.

management that was formulated by the Supreme Council
of Energy, which has eight programs to manage energy demand. These include specifications and regulations for green
construction, retrofitting the existing buildings, district cooling, wastewater reuse, regulations to raise the standards and
efficiency of devices and lighting, and working with private
companies to retrofit 30,000 buildings in Dubai. We have
also launched a company specializing in water and electricity consumption in buildings (Etihad ESCO), the Mohammed
