Satellite & Sensing
Technology to
Study Water Resources
Most countries around the world are facing difficulties in securing their
drinking water needs. The reasons behind these problems are likely to be
an increasing number of population and excessive use of water, as well as
the contamination of surface and groundwater, making it unfit for drinking. In addition to these difficulties, the amount of water available on earth
is constant over time, despite the disparity in these quantities between
one year and another.
This in turn has pushed researchers to find new ways in order to contribute
to the knowledge of water locations and the quantities available, as well
as developing methods used in water desalination and wastewater treatment and rational use of water for irrigation purposes. One of the methods
that scientists and specialists have recently developed to determine the
locations of the surface and groundwaters reservoirs, and their quantities
is the satellite and sensing technology. In collaboration with NASA, the
World Resources Institute has discovered a way to use the information
provided by satellites to improve the management and use of water. Approximately 200 miles above the Earths surface, two satellites circle the
planet, always between 106 and 193 miles apart. But while these twins
called Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) live in space,
theyre providing invaluable assistance in managing natural resources on
the ground.
GRACE has created a unique picture of groundwater level changes around
the Earth over the past 11 years. This information is already helping water
users and policymakers manage scarce groundwater resources. Its also
providing an example of how satellites and remote sensing are reshaping the water world. Most countries around the world invest in these waters without having exact information on the amount of water available
in each water reservoir. So it is hard to know the amount of water being
pumped and invested and its impact on natural feed rates. This is so much
like withdrawing money from your bank account without knowing the
amounts available in your account, and this is surely dangerous.

t is noted that many people die every year from contaminated water since the water quality is declining. Different water sectors face
problems to keep the early water quality through conventional treatment/disinfection approaches. Meanwhile the water quality regulations are becoming more stringent, complex and costly. Driven by rising demand for water reuse, the market for disinfection systems is
expected to reach USD2.96 billion globally in 2019, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan. While chlorine-based products will continue to
dominate, UV systems are expected to experience rapid growth.

more than 100 years and has been used in various industries for equipment sterilization.
On the other side and despite the widespread acceptance that disinfection is vital to managing scarce water
resources, high overall expenditure including capital
investments, running costs and service and maintenance
outlays is acting as a major restraint to uptake, says Frost
& Sullivans report Global Water and Wastewater Disinfection Systems Market. This is particularly the case in developing and poorly developed countries. Developing nations prefer low-cost solutions, even if the quality of the
product is compromised, said Frost & Sullivan's Energy &
Environmental Research Analyst Vandhana Ravi. This is
demonstrated by the fact that gas chlorination, despite
its hazardous nature, still dominates the APAC and Middle
East and Africa market, even while the Americas and Europe shift towards sustainable solutions. Frost & Sullivan
explains that municipalities and government entities will,
therefore, have focus on raising awareness about quality
issues and sustainable alternatives. Companies, on their
part, need to design high-performance, cost-effective disinfection solutions.

he demand for pure potable water is met by a wide array of wastewater treatment technologies, including physical treatments, chemical treatment, biological treatment, screening, and membrane filtration. These technologies have witnessed an outstanding growth
throughout the past decade, and industry experts forecast the global markets for wastewater recycling and reuse technologies to increase
from USD9.5 billion in 2012 to USD23.4 billion in 2017, reflecting a five-year CAGR of 19.7%. BCC Research, which offers these market expectations, explains that these global markets increased from nearly USD6.7 billion to USD9.5 billion during the period from 2009 to 2012, equivalent
to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6%.
The market expansion projected for membrane wastewater treatment technologies is rooted in industrial productivity and development and expansion of municipal
and packaged wastewater treatment systems, according
to a report by SBI Energy. Key regional considerations include trends in upgrading existing facilities, demand for
new facilities, shifts towards higher wastewater control
standards in Asia and especially in China, and control and
removal of emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals.
The same report says that as technology cost and operation period energy requirements for membrane technologies continue to decline, membrane wastewater
treatment technologies are expected to find application
across a broadening range of industrial and municipal
installations, including strong increases in wastewater
recycling, as well as increased and enhanced industrial
process water reuse and recycling for non-industrial uses
Demand for reclamation is particularly strong in arid regions where water supply is limited. In these instances,
treating wastewater for reuse is often preferable to desalination or long range procurement fresh water from
geographically distant sources, says SBI Energys report.
Stringent legislation on effluent discharge will continue
to boost the demand for wastewater treatment and recovery technologies, such as membrane-based systems,
activated carbon, and media filtration, among others according GBI Research. Acting as a primary driver, legislative directives have revitalized the wastewater treatment and recovery equipment market and enhanced the
growth prospects for secondary and tertiary recycling

oupling renewable energy (RE) sources with desalination has the potential to provide a sustainable source of potable water. A wide
variety of options are available to link RE and desalination technologies. Solar energy and in particular concentrating solar power (CSP)
has significant benefits in Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, according to The World Bank. Given its huge potential in terms of
resources and significant prospect for development, CSP is a competitive energy supply option over time. Moreover, as the only economically
viable RE technology to store and provide power on demand, CSP is especially suitable to power desalination plants, most of which are required

ydrosmart has entered an unprecedented phase of scientific research and development starting from 2009 and extending into 2015.
Dr. Bob Moore, Research and Development Manager at Hydrosmart Agronomic, says that agronomic and physical test results have
been coming in fast, showing that all of the great testimonials provided by farmers over more than a decade have been based on
verifiable science. In the following, Moore shows evidence of application of Hydrosmart to the vineyard industry in a time of drought. The
company continues to receive excellent reports back from satisfied clients, whose businesses depend on use of low water quality resources.
Essentially, the way Hydrosmart works is that it dissolves
the minerals in borewater. It teases the minerals apart
after the water has been underground for a long time
and minerals have accumulated to high levels and have
found each other, explains Moore. Equilibrated minerals in the groundwater interact with each other and are
poised to precipitate and cause trouble once reaching
the surface. As well as causing pipe blockages, dripper
and spray blockages, these minerals also cause crusts
to form around plant roots, depriving them of water.
Moore continues, By breaking up the minerals in water,
we dissolve scale and soil crusts, and free plant roots to
take up the water that they desperately need.
Clients of the company expect a high level of commitment to backup support, ongoing advice, and hydrological knowledge. Hydrosmart staff provides this service by
phone and email. Local customers also drop in occasionally to discuss their successes. Here, Hydrosmart shares
agronomistBrett Irvines extract from Agronomic comment on Hydrosmart for Growing Grapes 2014.
There are just two table grape vineyards located in the
vicinity of the western Queensland town of Cunnamulla and they are side by side and irrigate from the same
point from the Warrego River. They are predominantly
growing the Menindee seedless variety with the same
rootstock, trellis design and drip irrigation system. During regular farm visits to the region in February 2013,
I noticed a rapid deterioration in the vine health on
both vineyards. Tests on the Warrego River water quality showed EC of 2600 but the most dramatic issue appeared to be the high sodium carbonates and bi-carbonates similarly emanating from river and bore water
sources. Upon seeing this I advised both vineyard owners to consider installing a Hydrosmart unit to treat their
water used for foliar spray applications and irrigation.

ne of the common mistakes in designing force main lines is not considering siphon effect on operation and protection of pumping
systems. In many projects, force main lines are subjected to sever siphons that damage force main lines during filling time or normal
operating conditions. Unfortunately, we blame pipeline manufactures for such failure and no one knows the exact reasons. This paper
discusses the theoretical background and practical examples and solutions of such an important destructive phenomena caused by the
nature of pipe profile, eventually causing pumping failure in many projects. An engineer should be aware of the fundamentals of hydraulics
mechanics and should have practical experience of being familiar with such natural phenomena to be able to put the right solution and
design for such complicated systems. This phenomena is causing power limitations and cavitation on operating pumps, not only reducing its
performance but more important reducing overall pumping enhancement and has its sever influence on protection systems.
Theoretical background
A siphoned force main line is extended from the main
pump station at location a with distance zero, and water level at suction tank of x meters to destination tank
of water level at y meters and extended at almost L KM
in length. The force main line is divided into two sections,
the first reaches its max. Elevation of Z meters meters at
L1 meters length is considered ascending force main line
section. Force main line started to drop dramatically after
its max. Elevation of Z meters descends until it reaches
destination tank at L distance and Y meters water level
with relatively small elevation difference from pump station at a location. Due to the fact that the static head is
very small in relation with the max, and an elevation of
force main line at L1 distance in meters, a sever siphon is
created & care has to be taken to control not only the selection and operation of required pumps, but also the estimation of force main diameters at different sections.
In order to understand the above problem, we need to
know how to estimate the required head on the above
system that represents our case. In a simple and logic way,
the total pump head can be estimated as follows:
Total pump head = H static (y-x) + ascending head (z-x) descending head (y-z) (-ve due to gravity) + hfL in ascending line + hfL in descending line.
Eliminating the equal ascending and descending heads
(z-y) & (y-z) from the equation, we find out that the total
head only depends on the Static head difference between
the two tanks & friction losses across the hall pipe length.
Therefore pipe profile doesnt affect the required head of
operating pumps on steady state conditions.
In another precise way, whenever the elevation across the
pipe profile reaches any lower or higher elevation, the required pumping monomeric head on the system wont
be affected. In fact, the latter is very difficult in our case
because the elevated highest point z at distance L1 is far
from the delivery point y which will create a very sever
siphon during normal operating conditions that will definitely damage the force main line based on amount of sub
pressure at highest point.
If the pipe material can overcome small siphons, air valves
should be eliminated or carefully selected to brake such siphons & could be installed with the proper type in case we

and we are not able to determine the main reasons of
force main line failure in such cases as siphon appears during filling time and after sudden power failure and enters

he Middle East and North Africa (MENA) features amongst the fast-growing regions in the world second to Asia Pacific. While the oil
and gas industry has been the key contributor to the regions development, the local governments unified vision towards diversification
beyond the traditional limits and foray into the non-oil and gas has been paying rich dividends. Manufacturing and extended downstream
activities have been continuously invested in to ensure sustenance on the growth path. Economic growth, coupled with a growing populace, has
led to substantial increase in the regions inherent energy/infrastructure requirements. The power and industrial infrastructure has witnessed
a massive upgrade followed by significant investments. Barring disputes arising out of sectarian divides and political situations, the region
is largely destined to establish itself as an economic superpower over the next decade. Demand for equipment is a natural consequence of
industrial growth. Rotating equipment, a critical machinery of any industrial setup, of which compressors are an essential part, continues to
witness installations in the region.
As per Frost & Sullivan estimates, 2012 revenues for
the compressors market in MENA were more than
USD1,600 million, and the same has grown at a healthy
rate (more than 7.0 percent). The market for Centrifugal
Compressors during this period was estimated at more
than USD1,080 million while that of Positive Displacement (PD) compressors was in excess of USD520 million. Overall, the MENA market for compressors is forecast to become a more than USD2,000 million-opportunity by 2016. Frost & Sullivans research on PD (includes
Reciprocating and Rotary Screw Compressors) and
Centrifugal Compressors market suggests that a paradigm shift is likely to take place, with the emergence of
non-oil and gas segment as a primary demand driver.

While there is minimal value addition (engineering) locally, supplier investments targeting manufacturing/
assembly operations in the region are being explored.
Traditionally, compressor installations in the MENA
were dominated by American and European vendors.
However, the penetration of Asian (mainly Korean) Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors resulted in greater acceptance of compressors
from their respective countries, intensifying competition in the MENA compressors market.
In the short term, resurgence of industries across the region is expected to create opportunities for established
and new market entrants. However, given the dynamic
nature of this region, compressor suppliers planning
to expand or enter the MENA market might need to
periodically reexamine their strategies in accordance
with changing regional dynamics in order to maintain

envisaged) of the petrochemicals, chemicals, and fertilizers sector, especially in the GCC, is expected to generate significant demand in the compressors market.
Additionally, there is a huge after-sales opportunity afforded by the large installed base, commissioned over decades. Exacting the requirements of compressors, which
thereby raise the overall cost through certifications, safety features, instrumentation requirements, diagnostics/
monitoring, etc., largely contribute to the revenues.
Effective tapping of aftermarket will hold key to
healthy margins
The replacement market is expected to be a substantial driver for the rotating equipment industry; as old
equipment undergoes overhaul, retrofits, part replacements, or complete substitution with improved technology is a common feature. Escalating energy requirements have necessitated the construction of gas-fired
plants that need compressors. Growth in non-oil and
gas-based projects such as petrochemicals, power, desalination, water and wastewater, infrastructure, and
metals and mining will increase the overall demand for
compressors, and moderately reduce the dependence
of compressor manufacturers on any specific industry.
Furthermore, this is should particularly benefit compressor manufacturers with a limited range of American
Petroleum Institute (API certified compressors in their
product portfolios. Non-oil and gas segment presents
significant opportunity for the installation of non-API
certified compressors. Meanwhile, factors such as the
rising average price of oil continue to encourage additional investment in capital-intensive exploration and
production activities, as well as value-added processing and refining.
Possible growth impediments in the long term included reduced investments in the MENA projects due to
significant build-up of regional overcapacity, discovery
of major oil and gas sources in other countries (major
gas finds in the US, investment in shale gas, deep-sea oil
production, and others) as well as the growing impetus
world over to develop renewable energy sources. Also,
countries in the region are in a state of political uncertainty and unhealthy contagion. Political tensions over

succession in Saudi Arabia, sporadic political unrest in
Kuwait, global sanctions on Iran, economic imbalance
of Iraq, and the effects of the Arab spring in Bahrain, Jordan, and Lebanon, among others, has dampened investor sentiments. Political instability, along with a weak
global economy, has a diminishing effect on investor
confidence and end-user businesses, which is likely to
affect the compressors market. Investments targeted at
extending the downstream activity, and continued industrial diversification will be vital for sustaining the regions growth. Volatility in the global market for oil and
gas will have an impact the compressors market in the
short term.

echNavios analysts forecast the global UV disinfection equipment market to grow at a CAGR of 12.7 percent over the period 2012-2016.
One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increased advantages of UV disinfection. The global UV disinfection
equipment market has also been witnessing an increase in industrialization. However, the development of electronic ballast could pose
a challenge to the growth of this market.
TechNavios report, the Global Ultraviolet Disinfection Equipment Market 2012-2016, has been prepared
based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from
industry experts. The report covers the market in the
Americas, and the APAC and EMEA regions; it also covers the global UV disinfection equipment market landscape and its growth prospects in the coming years.
The report also includes a discussion of the key vendors
operating in this market. The key vendors dominating
this space include Advanced UV Inc., GE Lighting LLC,
Severn Trent Services Inc., and Siemens AG.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavios
CleanTech team said: Industrialization is a process by
which agrarian-based societies seek social and economic growth by their transformation into industrial
societies. In industrial societies, the standard of living
and scale of production of various goods is high, thereby resulting in an increase in the supply and usage of
water. Moreover, the rapid industrialization worldwide
and the depleting water resources have resulted in a
huge demand for safe, usable water. For instance, the
F&B industries need huge quantities of water for their
manufacturing process; therefore such industries can
deplete the water supply in regions where they are situated. Similarly, the increase in the standard of living as
a result of the growing industrialization has led to the
use of consumer goods such as dishwashers, washing
machines, and jacuzzis. Since the water supply is insufficient to meet these growing demands, it becomes necessary for industries and the public to reuse and recycle
water with the help of UV disinfection equipment. Thus,
the rapid industrialization is expected to foster the demand and growth of the global UV disinfection equipment market.

Protecting Underground
Water
The Lebanese Ministry of Water
has put forward in 2012 a Technical Control mechanism by which
every citizen wishing to exploit
his eventual underground water
has to pass by. It consists of creating a technical barrier aiming
to limit over exploitation by water wells (less than 150m deep).
A well dug for agricultural use
For this purpose, the Ministry
qualified several internationally recognized Third Party Inspection offices (TPI), among them is the French company
Apave. The job of these companies is: Step 1: the citizen
has to provide them with all necessary documents and
proofs needed for such endeavor according to the Ministry by laws in this field. Step 2: the TPI conducts a first
inspection visit to the site and issues a first report expressing possibilities of influence of such projected works on
neighboring systems. Step 3: the Ministry delivers or does
not deliver a well permit. Step 4: in case of permit delivery,
work inspection is carried out periodically by the TPI.

lobally, little attention is paid to gaseous emissions from wastewater treatment processes. This contrasts greatly with the regulatory
monitoring that is applied to the quality of water emissions from such facilities. However, in Helsinki, Finland, a large municipal
wastewater treatment facility continuously monitors its emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to help in the citys efforts to
combat climate change and also improve the wastewater treatment process. Employing a multigas FTIR (Fourier Transform InfraRed)
analyzer from Gasmet, a Helsinki-based manufacturer of analytical instrumentation, the plants managers are able to measure the
effects of process control on GHG emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. This also provides an insight into the fate
of nitrogenous compounds within the wastewater stream.
Background
The Viikinmki wastewater treatment plant was built
in 1994 to process wastewater from both domestic
(85%) and industrial (15%) sources. However, the average temperature in Helsinki between December and
February is around minus 4 degrees Celsius, with extremes below minus 20 and even minus 30 degrees
Celsius, so the plant was built almost entirely underground to avoid the freezing temperatures. Underground construction is common practice in the Nordic
countries, providing other advantages such as land
availability above the plant and the provision of stable
conditions for process control and odor management.
The Viikinmki plant is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Finland, handling approximately
270,000 m of wastewater per day, which amounts
to about 100 million m per year. The wastewater is
treated in compliance with the Finnish Wastewater
Discharge Permit, which is stricter than the EU Water
Framework Directive for parameters such as nitrogen
removal, phosphate content, BOD, COD and suspended solids. Following treatment, the purified / treated

(CEMS) from Gasmet, which was installed in late 2012
and we now have our first full years data for 2013. Very
little data has been published on the GHG emissions
of wastewater treatment and as far as we are aware,
Viikinmki is the only plant in the world conducting
this type of monitoring, so our data is likely to be of
major significance.
The Gasmet CEMS employs an FTIR spectrometer to
obtain infrared spectra from the waste gas stream by
first collecting an interferogram of the sample signal
with an interferometer, which measures all infrared
frequencies simultaneously to produce a spectrum
from which qualitative and quantitative data are produced. For example, the CEMS at Viikinmki continuously displays emissions data for CH4, N2O, CO2, NO,
NO2, and NH3.
Over a number of years, Gasmet has established a library of FTIR reference spectra that now extends to
simultaneous quantification of 50 gases or identification of unknowns from a collection of 5000+ gases. This
means that it is possible to reanalyze produced spectra
with the instruments PC based software (Calcmet) and
thereby to identify unknown gases a major advantage of FTIR. Whilst FTIR is able to analyze an enormous
number of gases, the technique is not suitable for noble
gases, homonuclear diatomic gases (e.g., N2, Cl2, H2,
F2, etc.) or H2S (detection limit too high).
Gasmet FTIR technology was chosen for the Viikinmki
plant because of its ability to monitor multiple gases
simultaneously. However Heinonen says: The system
has performed very well, with very little maintenance
required. Zero point calibration with nitrogen (background) just takes a few minutes each day and is fully
automated. Water vapor calibration is conducted at
least once per year, but under normal circumstances
no other calibration is necessary. With the benefit of
the monitoring data, Heinonen has calculated the annual emissions for methane to be around 350 tonnes,
and for nitrous oxide around 134 tonnes. This means
that the emissions per cubic meter of wastewater
equate to 3.5g of methane and 1.34g of nitrous oxide.
it will be
possible to
use the gas

data to

process
control
process control: Traditional monitoring/control systems focus on concentrations of oxygen, nitrate and
ammonia in the water, but if we detect high levels of
N2O gas for example, this may indicate a problem in
the process that we can use as a feedback control. The
monitoring data for gaseous nitrogen compounds
(N2O, NH3, NOx) complements water analysis and provides a more complete picture of the nitrogen cycle
in the treatment process. Clearly, further research will
be required, but this work may indicate a need to consider the fate of nitrogenous compounds beyond just
those in the wastewater; the removal of nitrogen from
wastewater is a key objective, but if this results in high
N2O emissions the process may need to be managed
in a different way.

the environment. The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa Test enables rapid detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in water samples down to the level
of 1 cfu per sample volume (100-250 ml). Sample
preparation is done by the membrane filtration (MF)
technique or by direct addition of water sample
(higher levels). The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa test can be combined with all Colifast analyzers or be used as a simple basic test. The detection
is based on bacterial growth and the activity of specific enzymes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.
This specific activity produces fluorescence which
is detected by the Colifast analyzers providing Presence/Absence results. Semi-quantitative information
can be obtained by determining the Time To Detect
(TTD), when fluorescence intensity reaches a certain
threshold. The test was a part of an EU project, EC
framework 5, which stated a sensitivity and specificity of 99% and 100%, respectively and a 10-16/18
hour detection time for Pseudomonas aeruginosa
(1-20 CFU/100 ml). The Colifast Pseudomonas aeruginosa test can be used for HACCP testing under
non-sterile conditions, at site without any laboratory
facilities. The rapid results shorten the time to make
decisions. Typical applications are bottled water,
swimming pools and Jacuzzis.

he need for sustainable water solutions is pushing industry specialists to give out proper answers to help customers during tough
times. National Water Works Co. (NWWC) stands out with innovative pump solutions on the water market. Arab Water World
(AWW) Magazine had the chance to meet NWWCs Chief Executive Engineer Essam Zahra to garner an elaborated perspective on
the companys effective role in the water industry.
the customer requirements, then we feed our partners of pump manufacturers with all data and suggestions to change the design of the pumps to meet
the customers need which will automatically lead
to the right pumping solution. In addition, NWWC
always is on the hotline with its partners for any new
market needs. This pushes our partners to involve in
the market needs which leads to improving their industries accordingly.
Q. How do you see the current market for pumps, especially in the Middle East & North Africa?
Zahra: Water pumping is one of the main sensitive issues in the MENA region, all of this regions countries
suffered the lack of water resources, so the governments did their plans in order to face this lack and
secure the resources, even by digging wells to get
ground water, constructing dams or by constructing sea water desalination plants, so in the coming
decade the pumps will be badly needed and much
more than previous years. The construction market is
very strong in MENA countries as well, so the requirement of pumps is needed as well, to serve the high
rate of water demand for all types of uses; eventually
the pumps market in the MENA region will be much
stronger than before.
Zahra: NWWC served customers in Saudi Arabia; National Water Company and the Ministry of Water
and Electricity are the main customers that NWWC
concentrate its efforts on, as they control water pumping and distribution in the kingdom.
In 2013 NWWC finalized big projects for all water
utilities in the kingdom, but the company succeeded
in supplying and installing 45 submersible pumps
for Riyadh Water Supply Enhancement Project. This
project was a story of success as NWWC succeeded
to supply, install and operate this huge number of
special pumps professionally in a limited time.
In 2014 the company continued its support to its
customers and supplied, installed and operated six
submersible pumps for MAADEN Company at Hazm
Aljalameed. NWWC is still running many projects in
the kingdom.
