Politically discordant couple nds

humor in agreeing to disagree
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Jose Cunningham and Greg Nelson, partners of
20 years, have always been one of those oppositesattract-kind of couples.
Cunningham, 60, works by day in marketing and
business development for a law rm but spends
much of his free time working in politics. Nelson, 46,
is a Minnesota native who came to D.C. in 1996 and
works as a health care consultant, though his passion
is for creativity and decorating. The 16th Street N.W.
house theyve shared since 2000 (next to Church of
the Holy City) regularly attracts gawkers because its
elaborately decorated for whatever is the next closest
holiday. My mantra is life is better with a theme,
Nelson deadpans.
Of course right now, its engulfed in ghosts and
pumpkins as well as general fall staples like friendly
scarecrows and mums. The decor continues indoors
and while abundant, it never feels tacky. More Martha

LGBT activists who turned out on Oct. 22 for a

Statehood Yes! rally outside the D.C. Board of
Elections oces said a vote for a D.C. statehood
advisory referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot would be a
vote for LGBT rights.
The activists joined Mayor Muriel Bowser, six
members of the City Council, and about 200 other
D.C. statehood supporters who gathered on the plaza
outside the city municipal building at 441 4th St., N.W.,
where the Board of Elections opened its doors on the
rst day of early voting in the city.
The LGBT community denitely should get
behind this, said longtime gay activist John Fanning,
who serves as chair of the Logan Circle Advisory

Neighborhood Commission.
We have marriage equality and we have
employment non-discrimination for LGBT people,
he said, but noted that Congress currently has full
authority to repeal those laws.
Fanning and at least a dozen other LGBT activists
attending the rally are calling on LGBT people and all
city residents to vote yes on Advisory Referendum B,
which asks voters if the city should petition Congress
in 2017 to admit D.C. as the nations 51st state.
I would say this is more relevant to LGBT people
than it is to the average person because right now
Congress can do whatever it wants, said Michael
Brown, one of the citys two shadow U.S. Senators.
Conservatives in Congress have attacked our gun
laws and theyve attacked gay people in our city as
well, he said. So if you want to secure things like
LGBT equality you want to be in control of your own
destiny as a state.

Mayor joins Blade celebration at Best of Gay D.C.

Announces support for
2022 Gay Games bid
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told
more than 300 people attending the
Washington Blades annual Best of Gay
D.C. celebration on Oct. 20 that she and
the city government would do all they
could to support the citys bid to host the
2022 Gay Games.
With a packed crowd cheering loudly
at Town nightclub, where the Best of
Gay D.C. event was held, Bowser noted
that representatives of the ocial D.C.
Gay Games XI Bid Committee would
be in Sydney, Australia this weekend
to promote D.C.s bid to host the
quadrennial international LGBT athletic
competition. Bowser led the crowd in a
cheer that was recorded on video to be
sent to organizers in Sydney, urging them
to bring the games to D.C.
The Federation of Gay Games,
which organizes the games and selects
the host cities, is holding its Annual
General Assembly in Sydney Oct. 21-24.
Representatives of nine cities competing
to host the 2022 Games from the U.S.
and abroad, including D.C., will make
presentations at that gathering ahead of
the formal bids they must submit by Nov.
30 of this year.
Now we have another opportunity
to make D.C. proud and to show what
were all about, said Bowser, in citing
the Gay Games and the Best of Gay D.C.
competition as examples of the citys
support for diversity.
I want to express my clear and
unequivocal support for the Gay Games
in Washington, D.C., she said.
Her expression of support came about
two weeks after the D.C. City Council
voted unanimously to pass a ceremonial
resolution expressing support for the
citys bid to host the 2022 Gay Games.
Bowser
also
congratulated
the
nominees and winners of the Blades
15th annual Best of Gay D.C. competition.
About 25,000 votes by Blade readers
were cast for individuals, organizations
and businesses competing in 99
categories. Among the categories were
best restaurants, best bartender, and
local hero, most committed activist, and
best LGBT bureaucrat.
The festive event on Thursday night
took on a somber note when friends and
family members of the late lesbian chef

Thousands turn out for High Heel Race

Mayor, in role of grand
marshal, kicks o festivities
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Thousands of spectators lined both
sides of 17th Street, N.W., near Dupont
Circle on Tuesday night as more than 150
runners dressed in drag competed in the
30th annual 17th Street High Heel Race.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who served
as one of three grand marshals for the
race, gave the signal to start the race
by shouting through a bullhorn while
standing at the starting line at the corner
of 17th and R streets.
Observers who attend the race each
year said there appeared to be a record
number of runners this year, all who
whom wore high heel shoes as they ran,
walked or strutted down 17th Street to
the nish line at Church Street.
Its fantastic every year, Bowser
told the Washington Blade shortly after
the race ended. You see people come
from all over our region to celebrate the
diversity of our city, she said.
And its just wonderful to be in one
of D.C.s great neighborhoods great
nightlife, great neighbors and people just
having fun, she said.

(D-Ward 2), whose ward has served as
host for the High Heel Race since its start
in 1986; and Sheila Alexander-Reid, director
of the Mayors Oce of LGBTQ Aairs.
The High Heel Races Facebook page
says the event is organized by the nonprot group Historic Dupont Circle Main
Streets with the help of the 17th Street
gay bars JR.s and Cobalt/Level One.
The Facebook page identied the
winner of this years race as a drag queen
known as Pig Farmah.
Also serving as grand marshals this
year were drag queens BaNaka and

Birdie LaCage.
D.C. Interim Police Chief Peter
Newsham headed a contingent of
several high-level police ocials who
attended this years High Heel Race and
who supervised more than two-dozen
police ocers who patrolled the area
and directed the closing of nearby streets
to make way for the race and the large
crowd of spectators.
I got to see the entire race go by, said
Newsham. Its a fantastic event every year.
Newsham said that similar to previous
years, none of his ocers reported any
problems surfacing at the event.

We usually dont have any problems

at this event, he said. People come out
here to have a great time.
One of the runners in the race, who
said he uses the drag name Sissy Voom,
joked that he had a political reason for
competing in the race.
Truly Im scared about a Trump
presidency, he said. And I thought the
best way to ensure that he doesnt win
is to wear high heels and run down the
street for 10 blocks.
Another runner who spoke with the Blade
before the race began and who identied
himself as Sam said he entered this year
became its just such a fun activity. When
asked if he thought he had a chance of
winning, he replied: Walking in heels is a
skill and I think that anyone thats able to win
is very talented. I dont think it will be me.
Longtime gay activist and Blade
commentator Peter Rosenstein, who lives
in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, said
this years race and crowd stood out as
one of the largest ever.
I think we had more runners this
year than ever before and the crowds
were huge, he said. It was as always an
incredibly peaceful event. People are just
having a great time.
Added Rosenstein: The police are
phenomenal. Theyre friendly. Theyre
helpful, he said. I think this is one of the
signature events in the District of Columbia.

Univ. of Delaware removes anti-trans Yiannopoulos posters

Gay provocateur, Breitbart
editor spoke on campus
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The University of Delaware on Monday
removed anti-transgender posters that
had been placed around campus ahead
of Milo Yiannopoulos appearance.
The Review, which is the universitys
student newspaper, reported some of the
posters had Caitlyn Jenners picture with
Trannies Are Gay written over it.
Another poster contained a picture of
a straight jacket with Trans = Mentally
Ill written over it. The Review reported
other posters featured images of rst lady
Michelle Obama and trans actress Hari Nef.
Andrea Boyle-Tippett, a spokesperson
for the University of Delaware, told the
Washington Blade on Tuesday that
approximately 20 signs were placed on
campus buildings and on parking meters in
the town of Newark. She said ocers with
the University of Delaware and Newark
Police Departments removed them because
they were posted without permission.

They immediately removed them,

said Boyle-Tippett.
More than 300 people attended
Yiannopoulos event that took place at
the University of Delawares Mitchell Hall.
The controversial gay provocateur and
Breitbart News Group editor held up the
posters after he took the podium.
This is a traveling free speech zone,
said Yiannopoulos.
The University of Delaware College
Republicans, who invited Yiannopoulos
to campus, told the Review it had nothing
to do with the anti-trans posters. Andrew
Lipman, a senior at the University of
Delaware who is the former president
of the University of Delaware College
Republicans, told the Blade on Tuesday
that Yiannopoulos did not say what he
planned to say during the event.
Lipman said the organization did not
pay Yiannopoulos to speak on campus.
The Review reported more than 250
University of Delaware students and
others attended a Unity Fair that
coincided with Yiannopoulos appearance.
John Fluharty, the former executive
director of the Delaware Republican
Party, sharply criticized the University of

Delaware College Republicans for inviting

Yiannopoulos to campus.
The College Republicans choice to
serve as a megaphone for Yiannopoulos
shameless
self-promotion
parading
as
intellectualism
damages
the
conservative cause and wounds our
partys eorts to build a stronger, more
inclusive movement, wrote Fluharty in a
letter to Lipman that the Blade obtained.
Us other Republicans the gay
ones, like me, the transgender ones, the
African American ones, the Republicans
who are told every day by people like
Yiannopoulos that there is something
wrong with them will soldier on
building a more welcoming and tolerant
party, added Fluharty.
Lipman in his response to Fluhartys
letter described Yiannopoulos as an
entertainer known to few.
Our club was 100 percent unaware of
the content of his speech until he was on
our campus, wrote Lipman. Yes we invited
him here, but we did not approve of posters
(sic) or of the content in any manner.
Milo is an entertainer, he added.
While he say (sic) things that many
people do not like, almost everyone in

our club asked us to bring him so we did.

Yiannopoulos in July spoke at a Gays
for Trump event at the Republican
National Convention that Pamela Geller,
a prominent critic of Islam, and Geert
Wilders, an anti-Muslim Dutch lawmaker,
also spoke. Twitters announcement that
it had permanently banned Yiannopoulos
over a series of racist tweets against
comedian Leslie Jones coincided with the
gathering that drew hundreds of people.
Yiannopoulos
spoke
at
George
Washington University in D.C. on Oct. 21. He
was scheduled to appear at the University
of Maryland in College Park on Wednesday,
but he said administrators cancelled the
event because of security concerns.
The right to free speech protects
every one of us, no matter how popular
or unpopular our views might be,
wrote University of Delaware President
Dennis Assanis in an op-ed the Review
published last week. In the same way,
our commitment to diversity means that
we must respect the unique perspective
each one of us brings to the public
conversation. If we think we can sacrice
either diversity or free speech to preserve
the other, we deserve neither.

Log Cabin declines to endorse Trump

Overtures to LGBT
community not enough
to justify support
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
TheLog Cabin Republicans announced
last week it will not endorse Donald
Trump, which marks the rst time in 12
years the organization hasnt endorsed
the Republican presidential nominee.
Log Cabin announced the decision
in an organizational statement from its
political action committee, which begins
with citing former President Reagans
famous quote, Trust but verify.
So cautioned former President Ronald
Reagan who inspired our founding in
1977 and it is a solemn understanding
of that very instruction from our 40th
president that compels Log Cabin
Republicans to withhold endorsement
from our Partys current nominee, the
statement says.
The statement says Trump is perhaps
the most pro-LGBT presidential nominee
in the history of the Republican Party and
cites unprecedented overtures to LGBT
people, but concludes thats not enough.
Log Cabin Republicans have long
emphasized that we are not a singleissue organization, nor are our members

DONALD TRUMP, who was in D.C. on Wednesday, wont get the support of Log Cabin
Republicans.

WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

single-issue voters, the statement says.

Even if we were, rhetoric alone regarding
LGBT issues does not equate to doctrine.
As Mr. Trump spoke positively about the
LGBT community in the United States, he
concurrently surrounded himself with
senior advisors with a record of opposing
LGBT equality and committed himself
to supporting legislation such as the socalled First Amendment Defense Act that
Log Cabin Republicans opposes.
In the event Trump is elected as
president, Log Cabin would welcome
the opportunity to work with him, the
statement says, to ensure LGBT rights
advances remain in place and continue,
but until and unless that happens, our

trust would be misplaced.

The last time Log Cabin refused to
endorse the Republican presidential
nominee was in 2004 as a result of thenPresident George W. Bush making a U.S.
constitutional amendment a central
component of his re-election campaign.
Log Cabin endorsed John McCain in 2008
and Mitt Romney in 2012.
Log
Cabins
decision
not
to
endorse Trump is consistent with the
recommendation of at least one its
chapters. Last month, members of the
D.C. chapter of Log Cabin Republicans
voted to reject Trump by a margin of 5644 percent.
But Log Cabin has made a slew of

endorsements in other races. Just this

week, Log Cabin issued its third wave
of endorsements consisting of support
for Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Mark
Kirk (R-Ill.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lisa
Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rob Portman
(R-Ohio) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.). Each of
these Republican senators voted in favor
of the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act in 2013.
The Washington Blade has placed a
request in with the Trump campaign
seeking comment on Log Cabins refusal
to endorse Trump.
Zac Petkanas, a Clinton campaign
spokesperson, took the opportunity of
the news to lambast Trump for his antiLGBT positions.
Anyone surprised that Donald Trump
and his hateful agenda are being rejected
by LGBT Americans hasnt been paying
attention, Petkanas said. Trump has
pledged to appoint Supreme Court
justices who would overturn marriage
equality, has run a campaign based on
the kind of schoolyard bullying intimately
familiar to the LGBT community and has
picked a running mate who advocated socalled conversion therapy for kids. The
only choice for president is Hillary Clinton,
who is tirelessly ghting every day for the
principles she so proudly articulated in
front of the entire world as Secretary of
State: Gay rights are human rights and
human rights are gay rights.

Pulse massacre overshadows Fla. Senate race

Rubio criticized over gun
control, LGBT rights
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Ricardo Negron-Almodovar, who is
originally from the Puerto Rican city of Yauco,
was at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.,
on June 12 when he heard gunshots.
He said in a Human Rights Campaign
video that he initially thought the
gunshots were part of a reggaeton
song. Negron-Almodovar said the music
stopped and clubgoers got on the oor.
People started screaming, he said in the
video that encourages LGBT people to vote.
Negron-Almodovar and a woman who
was asking people whether they spoke
Spanish survived the massacre that killed
49 people by running out of the nightclub.
Federal law prevents residents of Puerto
Rico, which is a U.S. commonwealth, from
voting in presidential elections.
Negron-Almodovar, who moved to
Florida in 2015, told the Washington Blade

on Tuesday during a telephone interview

that he plans to vote for Hillary Clinton. He
said he is also inclined to support Florida
Congressman Patrick Murphy in his race
against U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
Its exciting, Negron-Almodovar told
the Blade. This election has been dirty
for lack of a better term.
The Pulse nightclub massacre continues
to overshadow the race between Murphy
and Rubio that could determine whether
Democrats regain control of the U.S. Senate.
A poll that Bloomberg Politics released
on Wednesday indicates Rubio is ahead
of Murphy by a 51-41 percent margin.
A second poll from a Tampa Bay area
television station notes the Republican
incumbent is ahead of his Democratic
challenger by four points.
Rubio said before he launched his
failed presidential campaign that he
would not seek another term in the U.S.
Senate. Orlando City Commissioner
Patty Sheehan and Equality Florida CEO
Nadine Smith are among those who have
sharply criticized him for announcing his
re-election campaign less than two weeks

after the massacre.

Him using the Pulse massacre to relaunch his political career was beyond
appalling, Smith told the Blade on
Tuesday in an email.
Smith and other advocates have
criticized Rubio for not supporting gun
control measures in the wake of the
Pulse nightclub massacre. The CubanAmerican Republican in August reiterated
his opposition to marriage rights for
same-sex couples when he spoke at an
anti-LGBT conference that took place at
an Orlando hotel.
Rubio callously used the Pulse
shooting to run for re-election and then
once again turned his back on Florida
families, Jason Rubin, a spokesperson
for Murphys campaign, told the Blade
on Wednesday in a statement. Floridians
deserve better.
Murphys campaign last week released
an ad in which Christine Leinonen, the
mother of Christopher Drew Leinonen,
who died inside the Pulse nightclub
with his anc, Juan Guerrero, appears.
Murphy said in a Sept. 26 press release

that announced he had received HRCs

endorsement that he supports the
Equality Act, which would add sexual
orientation and gender identity to federal
civil rights law.
After the tragic Pulse shooting, it is
clear that much work remains to end
discrimination and keep LGBT Americans
safe, said Murphy.
From marriage equality to employment
nondiscrimination, Marco Rubio has
opposed LGBT equality at every opportunity
and has never stood with our LGBT
community in Florida, he added. Our
state deserves a senator who represents
the voice of the LGBT community and all
Floridians in the U.S. Senate.
The Pride Fund to End Gun Violence, a
PAC that formed after the Pulse nightclub
massacre, has also endorsed Murphy.
Patrick believes that we have a
responsibility to the victims of the tragic
Pulse shooting and Florida families
throughout our state to act on gun violence
and LGBT equality, Rubin told the Blade.

Dems sound alarm over anti-LGBT defense bill

Would undermine
order barring bias
among contractors
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Democrats are sounding the alarm
over the potential inclusion in major
defense spending legislation of an
amendment that would undermine
President Obamas executive order
barringanti-LGBT discrimination.
A group of 42 Senate Democrats led
by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)
made public a letter on Tuesday
calling on the conference committee
working on the scal year 2017 defense
authorization bill to omit from the bill the
Russell amendment, which would allow
religious-aliated federal contractors to
discriminate against workers.
Section 1094 applies not only to
the Department of Defense, but to the
entire array of federal agencies and
their contractors and grantees, the
letter says. This would have far-reaching
consequences,
as
taxpayer-funded
discrimination would be allowed in every
contract, subcontract, grant, cooperative
agreement and purchase order awarded

by federal agencies conducting business

with religiously aliated organizations.
Rep. Steve Russell (R-Okla.) inserted the
provision as an amendment to the House
version of the defense authorization bill
in April during the House Armed Services
Committees consideration of the measure.
The Senate version of the defense

legislation lacks any comparable language.

The Russell amendment permits any
religious corporation, religious association,
religious
educational
institution
or
religious society contracting with the
U.S. government to engage in anti-LGBT
discrimination on the basis of religious
freedom. Because it would have the force
of law, it would undermine Obamas
2014 executive order barring anti-LGBT
workplace bias among federal contractors.
The lack of denition for religious
corporation in the provision could allow
courts to construe the term broadly to
any federal contractor not just religious
organizations in the aftermath of the
U.S. Supreme Courts 2014 decision in the
Hobby Lobby case.
During a conference call with reporters,
Blumenthal said the adoption of the
amendment into law as part of the defense
authorization bill would enable sweeping
taxpayer-funded discrimination.
To
protect
religious
rights,
reproductive rights, all the fundamental
rights that are American values, we hope
that it will be deleted, and we are sending
this message as urgently and strongly as
we can because it is so important to so
many of us members of the Democratic
caucus, Blumenthal said.
Laura Durso, senior director of LGBT
research and communications at the

Center for American Progress, said on

the conference call that the amendment
would enable discrimination that is
not hypothetical, citing statistics that
one-in-10 gay people have experienced
employment discrimination and onein-four
transgender
people
have
encountered such bias.
Extreme anti-LGBT bills like the
Russell amendment will put millions
more workers at the risk of employment
discrimination, including the 28 million
workers under President Obamas
executive order barring discrimination in
federal contracting. Durso said.
Much of the onus from ensuring the
amendment is omitted from the nal
version of the defense authorization bill is
placed before Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.),
who chairs the Senate Armed Services
Committee and is facing a challenging bid
for re-election.
A McCain spokesperson declined
to comment on the basis conference
negotiations are still ongoing. A
spokesperson for the Senate Armed
Services Committee also declined to
comment, citing committee practice not
to comment on defense authorization
provisions subject to negotiation until the
entire conference report is completed.

Obama faces call to act on behalf of LGBT businesses

Time running out for
administration to
issue new policies
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
With less than three months remaining
before President Obama leaves oce,
LGBT advocates are calling on him to
take action on behalf of LGBT-owned
businesses seeking federal contracts
before his time is up.
The initiative, led by the National Gay &
Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, calls on
President Obama to sign a memorandum
or executive order to bar discrimination
in federal contracting against business
owners based on their LGBT status and
to set goals armatively to include LGBTowned businesses in federal procurement.
A memo to President Obama from LGBT
advocates on the issue obtained by the
Washington Bade emphasizes the added
protections for LGBT-owned businesses
would build on his legacy of advancing
LGBT rights under his administration.

There are an estimated 1.4 million LGBTowned businesses in the United States an
untapped well of innovation, job creation,
and economic growth, the memo says.
However, no protections exist to prohibit
discrimination against these businesses
in federal contracting. The history of
discrimination against LGBT individuals by
the federal government and lack of any
protections for LGBT-owned businesses
perpetuates a sense among these
businesses that the federal government
is not open to them, and among major
federal contractors that seeking out LGBTowned suppliers is not necessary.
The 17 signers of the NGLCC memo
includes GLAAD, the Human Rights
Campaign, the National Center for
Transgender Equality, the National
LGBTQ Task Force and PFLAG National.
The proposed action would be
similar to the executive order President
Obama signed in 2014 against anti-LGBT
discrimination. But that directive prohibited
discrimination against LGBT workers
among contractors doing businesses with
the federal government, not discrimination
against the contractors themselves at the
hand of the federal government.

A White House ocial was noncommittal about taking such action on

behalf of LGBT-owned businesses in
response to an inquiry from the Blade.
President Obama remains committed to
expanding opportunity for American workers,
strengthening American business and
advancing equality for the LGBT community,
the ocial said. Weve received the letter and
will reply at the appropriate time.
The request is one of the few remaining
from LGBT advocates after nearly eight
years of advancements under the Obama
administration. Another outstanding ask
is a public assertion the ban on gender
discrimination under Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964 applies to lesbian,
gay and bisexual people similar to the
declaration the administration made for
transgender people.
With fewer than 100 days left in the
administration, Obama has limited time
to issue new policies for contracting
withthe federal government, let alone to
enable that action to take eect before he
leaves oce. The regulations for the 2014
order against anti-LGBT discrimination
took nine months for the administration
to draft and start enforcing.

Sam McClure, senior vice president

of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce, said the memo isnt a new
request and represents an ongoing ask
the organization issued atthe start of the
administration.
Initially, the White House instructed
us to reach out directly to individual
agencies to secure commitments to
encourage the utilization of certied LGBT
business enterprises from secretaries,
McClure added. We heeded that direction
and secured the ever growing list of
memorandums of understanding that we
have. Since then, weve learned that the
agencies can only do so much without
government-wide direction from the White
House. Accordingly, for several months,
weve been in talks with administration
leadership about executive action.
Indeed, in July a bipartisan group of
44 U.S. House members sent a letter to
Obama calling for action on behalf of
LGBT-owned federal contractors. Among
the signers was Rep. Richard Hanna
(R-N.Y.) as well as gay lawmakers Reps.
Mark Takano (D-Calif.), Mark Pocan
(D-Wis.), Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.)
and David Cicilline (D-R.I.).

Couple says gay Dems hostile toward Trump supporters

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

Stewart than Dollar General.

The basement, the entire length of this
house is decorations, Cunningham says.
You should see Christmastime. Its quite
an extravaganza.
Were
very
complementary
to
one another, Nelson says. Im the
disorganized, creative one. Hes the one
whos very organized and on track and
helps me with things.
The same bemusement and sense
of
goodwill
Cunningham
exhibits
toward his partners passion for decor
extends to their other main dierence
Cunningham, chair of the D.C.
Republican Party, is supporting Donald
Trump for president; Nelson supports
Hillary Clinton. And yet their home is
not contentious. They simply agree to
disagree.
It helps that Nelson is quick to admit
Clintons aws. Hes hardly a dyed-in-thewool Democrat he even voted for Mitt
Romney in 2012.
Im pretty faithful to the party,
Cunningham says. He votes the person.
Numbers are hard to come by, but
Cunningham is not alone in his support
for Trump. The Log Cabin Republicans
have declined to endorse him, but
smatterings of LGBT Trump support
have surfaced in news articles and social
media and theyre not all of the Lucian
Wintrick (of Twinks4Trump fame) or
amethrower (a la Milo Yiannopoulos)
variety. Cunningham says all three of
the D.C. members of the 168-member
Republican National Committee are
openly gay and all are supporting Trump.
You cant imagine how well received
we are, he says.
Cunningham voted for Jimmy Carter
in 1980 and says the Carter presidency
pushed him to register as a Republican in
1980, which hes been ever since.
On local issues, a lot of his inspiration
comes from Democrats having a
stranglehold on local politics for many
years. He says the trend of D.C. Democrats
running as independents just to fulll the
dictates of the District charter is just
crazy and has to end. Nelson agrees.
But when it comes to the presidency,
Cunningham says its more complicated.
He cites national security, foreign policy
and his pro-life convictions as the main
reasons hes pro-Trump.
Ill be the rst to admit, Im as
establishment
as
you
can
get,
Cunningham says. But the reason Im
supporting this man is he wants change.
If we want change, its not going to
happen with Hillary Clinton, its with
Donald Trump. Now I know, that comes
with a lot of unknowns, but I know of an
awful lot of people here in town who are
not bashing Trump, not saying theyre

GREG NELSON with his candidate for president, HILLARY CLINTON.

not going to support him and are quietly

signaling in the background that theyre
ready to serve when he wins. If we wake
up on November 9th and Donald Trump
is our next president, we will only have
a very short amount of time to get this
government up and running.
Nelson admits hes the far less
politically involved of the two. Heretofore,
his biggest political endeavors have been
creating a Labradoodles for Obama
campaign inspired by their dog, Arbo,
when the Obamas were debating
between that breed and a Portuguese
Water Dog (they went with the latter) and
his creation of the Combover, a Trumpinspired cocktail with comb garnishment
he serves at GOP functions at their home.
But even so, Nelson has strong words
against Trump.
If there had been a stronger
Republican candidate who wasnt this
extreme, I would have considered voting
Republican, Nelson says. This really
is the rst election where I just dont
understand how he could support the
candidate. I think Donald Trump is
an irresponsible choice for anyone to
pick because of his poor choices, poor
temperament and lack of accountability.
And to what degree do LGBT issues
factor in their choices? Both say very little.
I dont think gay issues are very
high on the totem poll for either one
of us, Nelson says. I dont think that
just because youre gay, you should be
pressured into believing that should be
one of your top three criteria in voting.
Cunningham says the ocial GOP
platform, which is anti-LGBT, is of little
practical concern.
Nobody reads it, nobody talks about it,
nobody cares about it, he says.
He was much more impressed with
the way Trump spoke about LGBT people
at the Republican National Convention
and the speech by PayPal co-founder

Peter Thiel, the rst time in 16 years an

openly gay person has spoken there.
Cunningham and Nelson were there
they point out that Nelson was given
the same courtesies any straight spouse
would have been aorded even though
he and Cunningham are not married
and also attended the second presidential
debate on Oct. 9 in St. Louis.
Everybody in that convention center
in Cleveland stood up and cheered when
Peter Thiel came out, Cunningham says.
It was really amazing. Donald Trump has
spoken a lot about equality. Ive never
heard anyone say hes anti-gay.
Cunningham and Nelson agree that
now that the Supreme Court has ruled
on same-sex marriage, LGBT issues are
considered largely settled and thats why
theyve played so little role in the election
this time.
The couple, who met at JR.s the day
Nelson arrived in town and have been
together ever since, has also been
impressed by how warmly GOP leaders
have treated them. They commonly host
events at their house and say nobody has
ever batted an eye.
Weve had some really high-prole
people here, Cunningham says. You
would think it could be a potential
PR nightmare that theyre having this
event at a gay couples house, but its
never been an issue. I mean when
[Republican National Committee Chair]
Reince Priebus knows this gay Democrat
from Minnesota by his rst name, thats
really saying something.
People in the national Republican
Party have been nothing but gracious,
kind and welcoming to me, Nelson
says. Ive never had anyone say, How
could you vote for Hillary? Youre stupid,
youre crazy or any of that kind of blanket
statement. Whereas Jose gets that all the
time hes crazy, How can you support
Trump as a gay man? and all these

terribly inappropriate remarks.

But while Cunningham is pleasantly
surprised by his party, Cunningham
says the Democrats have at times acted
disgracefully. Three dierent times hes
caught people either trying to scrape
the Trump for President sticker o
Cunninghams car or key it. One was even
a gay couple.
If that had been another person who
targeted them for being gay and keyed
their car, thats a hate crime, Nelson
says. But they felt justied because it was
a Trump sticker. How is that not bullying
and its own kind of hate crime?
The vitriol Nelson encounters when
telling other Democrats his partner
supports Trump also galls Nelson. While
waiting in line to have his photo taken
with Clinton at the home of John Podesta
recently, he says the incredulous looks
and comments he got were rude.
Well-educated Democrats can be
incredibly close minded toward people
who have other views, he says. I think
its kind of funny that Jose is the chair
of the D.C. Republican Party and Im a
Democrat. Like were some modern-day
Matalin-Carville of D.C. or something. So
were waiting there forever in line and I
was making small talk with these two
women and when I told them, one looked
at me and said, Have you no self respect?
I guess you must have been really
desperate when you were single. I mean,
who says that to a stranger?
Both say they nd the vitriol that so
often accompanies politics baing.
I dont understand why it has to be so
nasty, Nelson says. I might not agree
with a lot of things Jose agrees with but
the beauty of America is that we have a
democracy that allows you to vote.
Their gut feelings on the outcome of
the election?
Cunningham says, I actually believe
Donald Trump will be our next president.
Its tough on the Electoral College side, but
I think were going to get the numbers.
No way, Nelson says.
While planning to vote for Clinton,
Nelson admits some of the admiration he
felt for her eight years ago has dimmed,
citing a pattern of surrounding herself
with people who make terrible decisions
and going to the edge of the cli again
and again.
Theres been a pattern of chaos that
seems to follow wherever she goes,
Nelson says.
Cunningham says no matter who wins,
the president will have his support.
I have incredible respect and admiration
for whomever the president is, he says. If
Hillary Clinton wins, Ill be there to support
her and pray for her every single day. I still
pray daily for Biden and Obama. Its the
United States of America and whoever
wins will be my president.

Activists rally LGBT support for D.C. statehood

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

In the 1980s, the city created two

shadow senator positions and one
shadow U.S. House position to serve
as unpaid advocates to promote D.C.
statehood. They have no congressional
powers.
Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress
has the authority to approve statehood
for U.S. territories as well as the proposed
state of Washington, D.C., by a simple
majority vote.
Most political observers believe a D.C.
statehood petition would have no chance
of passing in 2017 if Republicans retain
control of Congress. Many observers
believe its approval would be dicult but
possible in the unlikely development that
Democrats win control of both the House
and Senate in the November election.
Democratic presidential candidate
Hillary Clinton has expressed support for
D.C. statehood.
Most Republican lawmakers have

long opposed D.C. statehood, among

other reasons, because it would almost
certainly result in the new state electing
two Democratic senators that could help
Democrats gain or retain control of the
Senate.
The citys statehood movement evolved
from an earlier voting rights movement
in the 1970s that initially called for
providing the city with two U.S. senators
and one U.S. representative with full
voting rights in Congress without creating
a new state. But doing that requires a
constitutional amendment.
Such an amendment was approved
by Congress in 1978 and was sent to
the states, where it died after it failed to
receive the required approval by threefourths of the nations state legislatures.
At the time the proposed amendment
expired in 1985, only 16 states had
approved it.

2 hospitalized in anti-gay attack at Md. bar

Two men were assaulted by one or more members of a group of men who
referred to them in a derogatory manner in regard to sexual orientation
outside a sports bar and restaurant in Olney, Md., just before 3 a.m. Saturday,
Oct. 22, according to Montgomery County police.
A police statement says detectives from the 4th District station were
investigating the assault as a hate-based incident.
At approximately 2:50 a.m., ocers responded to the Green Turtle bar and
restaurant located at 18101 Town Center Drive for the report of an assault in
progress, the police statement says.
It says a preliminary investigation has found that the incident started after one
member of a larger group of men who were leaving the establishment walked
over to a separate group of four men sitting at the bar and poured water from
a glass on two of them.
Witnesses reported that the male referred to them in a derogatory manner
in regard to sexual orientation and began challenging them to a ght, the police
statement says.
Both groups exited the restaurant and individuals from both groups became
involved in an altercation in the parking lot, it says. Fire and Rescue responded
to the location and transported two males to the hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries sustained during the altercation.
The statement adds: Detectives believe they have identied the adult male
suspect who poured water on the two victims and they continue to work to
identify all those involved in this incident. This remains an ongoing investigation.
The police statement doesnt disclose the sexual orientation of the men
targeted for the derogatory name-calling.
A Montgomery County police spokesperson on Sunday said she didnt have
immediate access to further information on the case other than that the
investigation was ongoing.
The general manager at the Green Turtle who identied himself only as David
said the establishment was cooperating with police.
As of right now we have no comment, he said. But I can denitely let you know
we are working with the police department to try to help get this nalized. Were
still gathering statements on our end and the police are still gathering statements.

currently serves as director of advocacy

for the pro-statehood group D.C. Vote.
Shu stood behind a table handing out
statehood literature during the Oct. 22
rally.
He told the Washington Blade that
the LGBT community, like all of the citys
constituency groups, would benet by
having two voting U.S. senators and a
voting representative in Congress that
would come about through statehood for
the District.
He and other LGBT activists attending
the rally noted that under the citys
current limited Home Rule government,
Congress retains full authority to pass
or repeal D.C. laws should it decide to
exercise that authority.
Although Congress has not exercised
that authority very often, its decision
to do so in 1981 targeted the citys gay
community. In an action that startled
city ocials and outraged gay activists,
the House voted 218-119 to overturn a
bill passed by the City Council that would
have repealed the citys sodomy law.
The sodomy repeal measure was
part of a larger bill that called for
reforming the citys sexual assault laws.
Conservative House members, pressured
by the Rev. Jerry Falwells Moral Majority
organization, said their aim was to kill the
sodomy repeal provision, which would
have removed an archaic law making it
illegal for consenting adults to engage in
oral or anal sex in private.
While the law was rarely enforced in
recent times against consenting adults
in private places, gay activists said it
was used as a means of discriminating
against gay people in employment and
other areas because it labeled them as

lawbreakers.
More than a decade later, the D.C.
Council passed another sodomy repeal
bill which Congress did not attempt to
overturn.
The upcoming advisory referendum
for statehood is yet another step in calling
the nations attention to the immoral and
anti-democratic treatment of almost
700,000 U.S. citizens, said gay activist
John Klenert, a former board member of
D.C. Vote.
Klenert was referring to the fact that D.C.
residents have no voting representation
in Congress, making the U.S. one of
only a few countries throughout the
world considered a democracy where
residents of the capital city dont have
representation in the national legislative
body.
Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes
Norton (D-D.C.), a longtime supporter
of D.C. statehood who cannot vote on
the House oor, told participants at the
Oct. 22 rally that the citys lack of voting
representation in Congress imposed
taxation without representation on all
city residents.
Bowser told the Blade after the
rally that she, too, believes the LGBT
community has an important stake in
pushing for statehood.
I think LGBTQ voters are like all
Washingtonians in that they want
their taxes to be paid fairly like other
Americans but they also want a vote in
Congress just like every other American,
Bowser said. So I think the LGBTQ
community especially knows what its like
to be treated as second-class or thirdclass citizens. And were demanding to be
treated like rst-class citizens.

Keep your promise to protect each other.

Reacting to criticism over a controversial anti-LGBT report written by two Johns

Hopkins Medicine faculty members published in The New Atlantic, a letter from
Johns Hopkins Medicine dated Oct. 7 was sent to colleagues that rearmed
the institutions commitment to LGBT health and, in particular, to transgender
individuals.
The letter indicates that the institution will be resume gender-arming
surgeries, something that has not taken place in nearly four decades.
A petition signed by nearly 700 current and former students, faculty and sta
demanded that Johns Hopkins disavow the report by faculty members Dr. Paul
McHugh and Dr. Lawrence Mayer for their misguided, misinformed attack on
LGBT communities. In addition, the Human Rights Campaign threatened to
substantially reduce its Healthcare Equality Index score if Johns Hopkins does
not correct the record and insist that McHugh and Mayers opinions do not
represent Johns Hopkins Medicine. McHugh, for example, believes that trans
people should be treated as disordered.
The letter does not specically address the two authors by name. Instead, it
states, In recent months, some have questioned our position, both inside and
outside the institution, not because of any change in our practice or policy, but
because of the varied individual opinions expressed publicly by members of the
Johns Hopkins Medicine community. We have taken these concerns seriously.
We want to reiterate our institutional support for LGBT individuals and update
you on the work we are doing to further that commitment.
The letter also explains, When individuals associated with Johns Hopkins
exercise the right of expression, they do not speak on behalf of the institution.
After touting the work Johns Hopkins Medicine has done with the LGBT
community, the letter announces, We have committed to and will soon begin
providing gender-arming surgery as another important element of our overall
care program, reecting careful consideration over the past year of best practices
and the appropriate provision of care for transgender individuals.
Some remain cautious.
As a former employee of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health, I know that the Johns Hopkins Hospital system is uneven in its approach
to transgender health, Chris Adkins, a Ph.D. candidate, told the Blade. There
are some strong voices within the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine that do not
believe in gender arming surgeries, but the community should focus instead
on the faculty members in place that are advancing trans competent health
care such as Brandon Lau, MPH, Chris Beyrer, MD, Stefan Baral, MD and Tonia
Poteat, PhD PA-C and who have done great work such as the EQUALITY Study
(equalitystudy.com).

PHILADELPHIA The National Institutes of Health is funding a project to

develop an app that will encourage young men who have sex with men to get
tested regularly for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and Syphilis.
Get Connected is funded by the new NIH Adolescent Trials Network. Its
part of the UNC/Emory Center for Innovative Technology and the University of
Pennsylvania School of Nursing and the University of Michigan School of Nursing
are leading the implementation phase of the project. The Pennsylvania school
announced the project in a press release.
This web app is distinct from existing online HIV/STI testing center locators
in that our web-app provides young men with strategies to overcome barriers
that keep them from getting tested, said Jose Bauemeister, a professor at Penn
Nursing who developed the app. Using tailoring technology, we can customize
the content based on users risk prole, their values and needs, and other
characteristics unique to each individual.
Over the next four years, the trial will enroll more than 400 young men
between the ages of 15 and 24 who live in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Houston.

Go easy on the knees

Shoes, surfaces and more
factor into good running habits

DAVID MAGIDA is founder of Elevate Interval

Fitness, a member of the Reebok Spartan Race Pro
Team and author of The Essentials of Obstacle
Racing: A Beginners Guide. You can catch a class
with him at Elevate on 14th Street or at its new
location in the Mosaic District in Fairfax, Va.

You probably hear people say it

all the time. I cant run because I
have bad knees. But is it possible
the knee pain isnt the problem so
much as a symptom of other issues?
Theres such a stigma attached to
running. People who arent regular
runners love to blame running for
knee issues, or use it as an excuse
to avoid running with regularity. But
running may not be the actual issue.
There are so many variables that
could impact your knees during and

after the run.

First, think about your shoes. How long have you had them? How many miles
have they been put through? Have you properly dried them after theyve gotten
wet? If your solution is throwing them in the dryer or leaving them wet, then
the answer is no, youve been mistreating your shoes and breaking down their
structural support.
Shoes need to be taken care of. They are what protect you from the impact
of running on the road. To dry them, stu them with old newspapers and leave
them in open air. Every 300-500 miles they should be replaced if used just for
running, and if you do more in them, like playing basketball, weight lifting, cross
training or more, you should consider replacing them every three months.
Although it may sound expensive, those new shoes will better serve you by
absorbing the impact of each step you take. In the long run, your knees and
shins will feel better when running and youll avoid injuries, saving you money
down the road.
Another way you can avoid knee pain is to select the appropriate terrain. When
selecting terrain to run on, the goal is to avoid asphalt and concrete as much as
possible. For a major city, D.C. has an incredible selection of running options.
If youre looking for trails, we have miles and miles of single tracks through
Rock Creek Park as well as smoother, broader horse trails. If you prefer gravel,
take your trip to the National Mall or the towpath of the C&O canal. Throughout
the District youll nd opportunities to ditch the roads and nd your way onto
gentler surfaces to help take the beating o your feet, knees and shins.
Its that pounding on the pavement that causes issues for most people,
sending tremors of impact up your feet and through your legs. If you can nd
ways to avoid the impact, youll nd that running isnt the beat down you always
thought. So take time to plan your route and get creative to protect your legs
from the harder surfaces.
Finally, try running intervals. There are so many reasons to run them for
the positive impact on your speed and performance, but they can also be less
of a beat down on your joints. First, intervals allow you to get a great running
workout in without having to run quite as many miles. Reducing that mileage a
bit allows you to continue to run with regularity without the consequences of
high-mileage training.
You can run intervals on essentially any surface, including grass, trails or even
a springy track. Gentler surfaces lead to gentler impact and less inammation
in the joints.
Running can be immensely benecial for improved endurance, weight loss
and increased happiness. So before you demonize running, see if theres
anything you can do to make it more manageable. With better shoes, better
terrain and dierent training methods, you may nd running isnt a problem for
your knees after all.

The lesbian plot

It all began in the 80s and

KATE CLINTON is a humorist who has

entertained LGBT audiences for 30 years. Her
monthly column appears exclusively in the
Blade. Reach her via kateclinton.com.

This is my last column for the Washington Blade.

Since 2013, it has been a pleasure
to reect on many momentous LGBT
events. During my four-year tenure, the
Supreme Court struck down DOMA and
Prop 8. Pope who-am-I-to-judge? Francis was sworn in. Athletes started coming
out of the closet and breached one of the
last homophobic barriers. The Supreme
Court ruled we were full human beings

entitled to full marriage equality.

When the inevitable backlash began,
it was good to have an outlet for my
fury. Lil Kim gave Kentucky a bad name.
North Carolina rescinded gender-neutral
bathroom ordinances. Then there was
the heartbreaking news out of Orlando.
All this happened in the context of endless war, racist violence, wealth disparity,
retro-misogyny and a seemingly endless
presidential campaign.
I have been grateful for the opportunity
to write this column and am grateful to you,
my readers. The discipline of a deadline
made me write more regularly, if not always
gratefully. Many of the ideas in my monthly
columns found their way into my stand-up.
And some lines in my stand-up If the Internet were in 3D it would look like ISIS
should have been a column in the rst place
and not so much a series of jokes.
But this is my last column. Cue the
weeping, the wailing and the keening.
Nooooo, dont go! Keep it up. We wont
know what the old lesbians are thinking
without you! Cue the gnashing of the
teeth, the rending of the garments unless

wait for it without a woman elected
president of the United States.
Hope that buildup didnt sound as coy
as Trump saying he will accept the outcome of the election if I win. He said he
meant it as a joke, but we saw his joke
skills at that Holy Friars Club Roast in NYC.
He is dead serious when he claims that
the election will be rigged. That is: it is so
unnatural for a woman to be president,
her election would perforce, be rigged.
Truth be told, and it so rarely is, the
election is rigged. I was at that secret
meeting. Back in the 80s, all the dierent lesbo-feminista families got together
at an old hunting lodge in the Poconos.
The patriarchy wasnt going down fast
enough. Or at all. We were sick and tired
of it. We debated for days. We nally decided on the plan.
First, we needed a woman president.
We decided to run a battle-tested woman, probably a grandma, well-known, but
not beloved. Her EQ could only go up.
The kind of dame who never gives up, will
wear you down, and make you beg to be
water-boarded. That kind of dame.
Wed lure the media into creating the
biggest, whitest slab of primo patriarch,
clueless capitalist, trigger alert, vulgar
showman to run against her. Of course
we knew we ran the danger of his appeal
to actual voters. We fought about strategies. We agreed to have a three-minute
tape of him bragging about his sexual
exploits. We knew there would be one.
We were willing to use it. Billy Bush was
the bonus. Turns out those three minutes
have had the combined eect of 1,204
Take Back the Night Rallies, 793 Slut
Walks and 27,119 performances of The
Vagina Monologues.
We are encouraged but we caution
each other not to get complacent as we
near the completion of Phase 1. We remind each other that the polls are articial intelligence. We have a huge get-thesisters-out-to-vote plan. We are eager to
begin Phase 2. Its all in the emails.
So hell no, this is not my last column.
Ive been working for this moment for
more than half my life. Oh Hill, yes.

Activism, the black athlete and supporting LGBT equality

Alis legacy and why
Kaepernicks critics
are wrong

SEAN JAMES is executive director of Sports &

Entertainment for Hotaling Group Insurance
Services and a former NFL player.

Why do so many African-American professional athletes today view Muhammad

Ali as a hero, but fall short of even trying to
live by the same code of ethics that made
him a hero? Ali became a hero because he
was never silent. He said things he knew
would make people uncomfortable, even
angry, but that he believed would help
bring about awareness and change. Ali was,
as a result, a controversial gure during his
life. He angered countless people with his
message and many people hated him. It
was only later that Ali was recognized for
his impact on our country.
I remember that once as a boy I heard Ali
call himself pretty on TV. This was before
Beyonc made big booties sexy, before
girls were pumping their lips full of llers.
This was the 1970s. Black features were
not considered pretty. I remember how
powerful it was to see a man who looked
like me categorize himself that way. I was
nine years old, and I have never forgotten that moment. It was a small moment,
but one that empowered me to feel good
about myself. That is the power we possess
as professional athletes: We have a platform to speak, and a way to give voice to
so many voices that remain unheard. We
have the ability, and I believe, the responsibility, to serve as a voice that will empower
and engage others. But that platform, and
the power it gives us, is an opportunity too
many of us ignore.
When I started writing this piece, my
intention was to draw attention to Black
athletes who admire Ali for his activism,
but remain silent as injustices continue
to reveal the persistent inequity in this
country. More specically, I wanted to
center that discussion on the fact that
African-American heterosexual males
have remained noticeably absent in the
ght for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, being that we are all too familiar
with what it feels like to be a disenfranchised and discriminated against minority. Before I nished the piece, however,
I saw San Francisco 49ers quarterback
Colin Kaepernick sit down for the national anthem and I saw America stand
up in protest. When asked why he didnt

Why do we praise Muhammad Ali, yet criticize COLIN KAEPERNICK?

PHOTO BY KATHCLICK; COURTESY OF BIGSTOCK

stand, Kaepernick said he was not going

to stand up to show pride in a ag for a
country that oppresses Black people and
people of color.
The way Kaepernick took a stand was
exactly the type of activism I wanted to see
among todays Black athletes, but before I
had time to applaud him, the media crucied him. Worse yet, it wasnt just the mainstream media that was speaking out. Even
fellow Black athletes were speaking out
against him. It was bad enough that so many
Black athletes were willing to be silent and
let others stand up for our people, but now
some were actually chastising him for standing up for us. Kaepernick wanted dialogue,
but instead he got told that he had crossed
a line. He wanted to spark conversation, but
instead he was told to be quiet. In fact, he
was told to be grateful.
Ironically, one of the criticisms of Kaepernick came in the form of an argument
that Kaepernick was not in a position to
stand up for Black people because he was
not Black. Forgetting about the fact that
Kaepernick is in fact half Black, that position itself is nonsensical. If he were white,
would it be wrong for him to stand up for
Black people? Does that mean that white
people cannot defend the rights of Blacks
or other minority groups? That straight
people cannot defend the rights of the
LGBTQ community? Historically, no minority group has ever gained the equal
rights they sought without the support of
the majority.
And its true that Kaepernick does not
necessarily feel the impact of racism or
injustice day to day 9 he is not part of the
disenfranchised Black community he is
ghting to protect. The Civil Rights lead-

ers of the 1950s, such as Martin Luther

King Jr. and Malcolm X, were standing up
for their own rights along with the rights
of the Black community King couldnt
sit at the front of the bus either. Kaepernick is educated, and has a multi-million
dollar contract as a quarterback in the
NFL. But in my mind that makes his action
even more powerful, not less. His silent
protest was not driven by self-interest. He
chose to speak for those who dont have
a voice. As he put it, This country stands
for freedom, liberty, justice for all and
its not happening for all right now. That
was reason enough for him to take action, despite any repercussion he might
face. That is what makes him a leader.
So why are so few athletes willing to
stand up or, in Kaepernicks case, sit
down? Many people do not realize that
if a player has made it to the NFL, he has
been playing since he was a child. From
that time, he has been systematically
trained to aspire to be in the NFL. Once
a player makes it to the league, his impulse is, one, to fall in line, to do nothing
that might jeopardize his team, a sacred
brotherhood. Two, not to do anything to
jeopardize his salary or endorsements.
More than half of the players in the NFL
come from poverty. For more than half
the players in the league, football is the
only way they see to take care of themselves and their families.
But the impulse and pressure to fall in
line is what keeps so many players from
standing up the way Kaepernick has
and keeps so many players silent when
they could be voices of change. The unfortunate truth is that their fears are not
unfounded. Broncos linebacker Brandon

Marshall, who has chosen to take a knee

for the anthem in light of Kaepernicks
protest, has already lost two endorsements as a result of his actions. While
too many of us still sit on the sidelines in
the ght for justice, I am heartened that
Kaepernicks activism has begun to gain
momentum: more athletes take a knee,
raise their rsts, link arms in support of
him and his message. Even 49ers owner
Jed York came out in full support of Kaepernick. Despite sacricing two endorsements, Marshall remains steadfast in his
commitment to the protest, and the conversation he hopes it will inspire.
I would love to see this momentum continue to build and have more professional
Black athletes stand up publically for the
larger Black community. But what I would
also love to see is that activism stretch beyond the reach of our own people and begin to try to help yet another marginalized
group, the LGBTQ community.
There is an unmistakable power balance
in this country, and we all know who wields
that power. That being said, within the other groups that comprise our nation, there
does exist a hierarchy of power. That hierarchy is what gave Kaepernick the opportunity to stand up for his beliefs in a way that
a lot of other Black men never could. It is
also what allowed the entire football team
and the entire student body at University
of Missouri to stand up for Michael Sam,
and allow him to live his life openly as a gay
man (which, by the way allowed him to play
the best season of his entire collegiate career). And, two years laterallowed the Missouri football team to stand together as a
team against the racial discrimination that
was occurring on their campus and boycottplaying a single game until they got a
public apology from the president of the
university. Regardless of our race, as athletes, we do in fact wield power. The power to raise our voices for change is in our
hands, but I see so much silence.
The LGBTQ community is another minority community in our country that is
still ghting to be truly equal under the
laws of our nation. And while I am by
no means saying that the Black ght for
equality is over, what I am saying is that
there are many Black people in this country, such as professional athletes, that do
in fact have a tremendous platform with
which they can show support for the LBGTQ community. We have power to not
only help ourselves, but to help another
group who seeks fairness and equity.
If more professional athletes stood up
for the LGBTQ community the same way
Muhammad Ali and Colin Kaepernick did
and the way others are beginning to do,
think of the impact and the power that
would have on the LGBTQ community
and their ght for equality. Continues at

Yes, Hillary can unite the country

A lifetime of experience in
diplomacy, collaboration

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

The question more people are asking is

how Hillary Clinton can unite the country after she is elected. This campaign has made
it clearer than ever how divided a nation
we are. Donald Trumps incredibly negative
and divisive campaign, his speech and his
actions, have exacerbated the divisions. We
have seen some people take his campaign as
permission to model poor behavior voicing
their own racism, homophobia, sexism and
misogynistic tendencies.
These divisions wont go away or be healed
quickly. It will take time, education and rational people in both the Republican and
Democratic parties working hard to heal the

rifts and allow the country to move forward

together. My optimism leads me to believe it
can and will happen.
The reason for that optimism is Hillary Clinton. She has a lifetime of experience working
to heal rifts and soothe hurt feelings. Actually,
many women have the same experience in
their own lives and families.
One indication of Hillarys ability to succeed
is how Americans view her every time she is
in a position of power or in oce. In those
situations her approval ratings go up every
time. When she was a senator from New York
her approval rating was at about 58 percent.
It was even higher when she was Secretary
of State at around 65 percent. When she was
rst lady of the United States her approval
ratings went up and down often depending
on what Bill did but peaked at 67 percent. We
should also remember that for 20 years she
has been voted most admired woman in the
world in the Gallup poll.
So Hillary has shown her ability to bring
people together and to change their feelings
toward her. When she didnt get universal
healthcare passed during her husbands administration she didnt give up working for
children. It was reported in a Penn Live oped, Hillary made adoption and foster care
one of her priorities. She worked across the

partisan aisle, with two unlikely partners: former Republican Minority Whip Tom Delay
of Texas and business leader Dave Thomas
of Wendys, a lifelong Republican. Together,
they held events at the White House to raise
awareness, and built support for legislation
that would encourage adoptions, provide
more aid for foster families, and help foster
children nd permanent, safe, loving homes.
The rst piece of legislation was the Adoption
and Safe Families Act of 1997, which provided
support and services for adoptive families,
and increased foster adoptions by 64 percent
by 2002.
Hillary worked with Sen. Ted Kennedy (DMass.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to get
the Childrens Health Insurance Program
(CHIP) passed. Nick Littleeld, Kennedys top
domestic policy adviser, said, Hillary was a
one-woman army inside the White House
to get this done. Even after the new program was signed into law according to David
Nexon, Kennedys former healthcare sta
director, The work wasnt doneand Hillary
knew it. It was up to the states to make sure
low-income children could enroll and receive
high-quality care. Hillary worked alongside
Republican governors across the country,
including Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, New
Jersey Gov. Christie Todd Whitman, and Utah

Gov. Leavitt to promote the Insure Kids Now

campaign and make sure the children who
needed coverage were able to sign up.
Then when in the Senate Hillary worked
with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and others on healthcare for the National Guard. In
2007, on Voice of America when talking about
working across the aisle, Graham quipped,
that his relationship with Clinton is a good
example of that. We have become, actually,
good friends. And that was a surprise to both
of us.
Hillary like many women tends to be more
of a nurturer. She has brought up an amazing
daughter and kidded recently even though
she will be the commander-in-chief she will
still be approving the china and owers for
state dinners. She like so many women is
tough. But like so many women she is able to
share credit or even give credit to others if it
will mean achieving her goals.
All you have to do is watch Hillary as
the campaign nears its end. She is speaking more of uniting people; Democrats,
Republicans and independents. She understands the diculty of what she will
be up against but I will put my money on
Hillary to succeed. Stronger Together is
not just a slogan to her; it is her vision for
our future, a better future for all.
VIEWPOINT

Where is Chase Brexton Health Care growing?

Changes wont affect
our commitment to
LGBT community
By NATE SWEENEY
From unions to patient care, Chase Brexton Health Care has been the topic of much
conversation of late. Many have asked: what
does the future hold for an organization that
has been a beacon of care, hope, and acceptance for Baltimores and, increasingly, all of
central Marylands LGBTQ community for
almost four decades?
Ive been told by some that they feel Chase
Brexton is growing away from its roots; transforming from an arming expert in LGBTQ
health care into a mainstream generic health
care facility. As an openly gay man and a member of Chase Brextons leadership team, Im
saddened and frustrated to hear this.
There is no denying Chase Brexton has
grown by leaps and bounds in the last ve
years, but that growth does not diminish our
unending commitment to serve as an exemplary LGBTQ provider and resource for our
communities.

Chase Brexton was founded in response

to the needs of our community; the desire for
respect, safety, and care. The volunteers who
began the practice as a gay mens STD clinic
in 1978 likely had no idea how long the clinic
would last. Unknown to anyone then, the HIV
epidemic was also on the horizon.
HIV/AIDS ravaged Baltimores LGBT community through the 1980s. After a decade of
battling the disease, Chase Brextons leadership in the early 1990s was struck by the needs
of the communitys families, partners and
friends who were not infected with HIV, and
were not necessarily LGBT, but were in need
of access to arming, welcoming health care.
To meet those needs, we added behavioral
health and case management services to our
growing care model. By 1995, Chase Brexton
had full primary care services available to anyone in need of care.
This expansion was not intended to minimize our care for our LGBTQ patients. To
the contrary, that growth addressed more
of our patients unique needs. It welcomed
those who were yet unable to identify, and it
welcomed those who were medically underserved. Ultimately, the intent of Chase Brextons growth was, and still is, to build stronger
communities for all of us.

In 2000, we provided care to fewer than

1,000 individuals who identied as LGBTQ.
Today, that number is close to 5,000. But it
doesnt include the number of individuals who
come through our doors for free HIV testing
and free education and resources.
In fact, the total number of LGBTQ people
we serve has signicantly increased, and our
growth has allowed us to focus greater resources on their varied needs. By establishing
our LGBT Health Resource Center, by creating
a dedicated behavioral health team for LGBTQ
patients, by adding a pediatric practice for
gender-diverse children, and by adding support and training programs for LGBT caretakers and elders, Chase Brexton remains committed to ensuring our communitys needs are
met amid the changing face of healthcare.
To the LGBTQ community at large I say:
Chase Brexton will always work to meet the
needs of our community. We believe the
doors must be open for those who have limited access to care and we will do all we can
to get them into care. And we will continue to
hire and train culturally competent, arming
sta who believe in our mission and vision.
I would be remiss if I didnt address that
last thought a bit more rmly: Our sta of 410
employees across all our ve centers, at every

level in the organization, are a part of our team

for one reason, they are mission-driven.
To put numbers to it, more than half of our
provider team has a special focus on LGBT
health care. While 4 percent of our total patient population identies as gender diverse,
15 percent of our providers have a special focus on trans care.
Less than a year ago, a survey of our sta
was independently performed by the Society
of Human Resources Management. In that
survey, 81 percent of respondents said the
diversity and inclusiveness of our organization was a highly important factor in why they
chose to work here. In addition, 88 percent
said the work itself was a key factor in why
they sought employment with Chase Brexton.
I have no doubt of the passion shared by everyone at Chase Brexton for the work we do and
the patients we care for. Chase Brextons team
is human, and we are not perfect. As an organization, and as we continue to grow, we will likely
run into issues, make mistakes, and stumble.
But our first and last thought in all we do is about
our patients health and how we can provide better care for both our patients and our staff.
NATE SWEENEY is executive director of the
LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton
Health Care.

Twin death spirals: Capital transit, federal health care

Breakdowns in local transit,
federal health care expose
governance failures

MARK LEE is a long-time entrepreneur

and community business advocate. Follow

OurBusinessMatters@gmail.com.

Its been a bad couple of weeks for government, both in the Washington region and
across the country. Aside from the excruciating and seemingly endless presidential race
between two disliked contestants measured
merely by the degree of the others disrepute.
Absent a fondness for presiding over a bureaucratic project in a death spiral, there are
two people no rational person would want to
be in Washington right now.
One is the relatively obscure Secretary
of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, suering the grim news this

week that the controversial federal government health care program is crawling closer
to being unsustainable. The administration
acknowledged on Monday that health insurance premiums on the federal exchange are
skyrocketing by a national average of 22 percent. This comes simultaneous to dramatically
rising deductibles and co-pays, constricting
care access and plan benets, crumbling insurance cooperatives, and insurers eeing the
exchange marketplace.
Of course, if youre among the vast majority of Americans with job-provided coverage
or the nearly 90 percent on a health care exchange plan who are heavily taxpayer subsidized, you arent feeling the pain and dont
much care. Your health insurance is also
worsening, of course, and employer-provided
plans are eating up your next pay raise or
threatening job loss by layo, but its easy to
look away and pretend otherwise.
The other persona non grata of the moment in the nations capital is Metro General
Manager Paul Wiedefeld. He got an earful last
Thursday at a nearly 10-hour public hearing
of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority regional board. Metrorail riders expressed, in the straightforward language of
regular folks, anger and dismay at the transit

agencys performance and Wiedefelds variable and multiplying proposals to curtail service. It wasnt only metropolitan area transit
advocates, business groups and politicians
weighing in, but regional residents who took
the time to turn out to testify.
Public outrage was focused on Wiedefelds
continuing insistence that the Metrorail system serving D.C. and the surrounding metropolitan area in both Virginia and Maryland
must permanently cut back operating hours
and late-night weekend service to conduct
regular maintenance following the conclusion
of the nearly year-long SafeTrack repair program in May.
To hear Wiedefeld tell the tale, its a question
of how many hours of repair work he adamantly insists are needed each week to maintain the
system. Hes been unable to oer adequate
explanation why more hours are needed here
than for other systems nationwide.
As if threatening the public like children
to be sent to bed without dinner, Wiedefeld
more recently released a proposal to shut
down a large number of Metro stations for
all but rush-hour periods concentrated in
lower-income and less-developed areas. His
plan would cut o the transportation lifeline
for those most in need of it and stunt future

development of desperately needed housing.

There is also a high degree of skepticism
that either permanent service cutbacks or
throwing more money at the problem will
yield better results than seen so far. A speeding train nearly running down two Federal
Transit Administration safety inspectors last
Thursday was only the latest in a now-daily
litany of a system in disarray.
Metro is plagued with deciencies in sta
performance, customer service and employee
attitude. Yet over the years Metro management has acceded to labor union demands for
unsustainable compensation rates, benets
and pensions. Metro was recently forced to
le a lawsuit over falsication of safety inspections in a challenge to union-negotiated rules.
Metrorails breakdown is increasingly
viewed less as a crisis of cash and more a problem of performance, exacerbated by a failure
in government oversight. There is scant hope
for providing a regional sales tax dedicated
funding source without major improvements.
Wiedefeld seems blithely unaware that the
regions economic growth, development and
vitality depend on transit operating during the
expanded lifecycle of a modern metropolis.
Fortunately, few support his plan to move in
the opposite direction.

Whos your LGBT hero?
Do I have to pick just one? Tom Ford,

Jerey Tanck is trying to end his running career with a bang. On Sunday,
Oct. 30, hell run the Marine Corps Marathon, his 10th.
Ive decided to push myself and run this one last time, Tanck says. The
race is on Oct. 30 and I turn 45 on Nov. 1 so this seemed like another good
milestone.
Tanck is running in honor of his maternal grandfather, Thomas Leroy Cain,
who served as a Marine in World War II. Tanck says his PopPop is one of
his biggest heroes. Hes also running to support LGBT equality with HRCs
Athletes for Equality team. So far, hes raised $1,645. Search his name on
crowdrise.com to donate.
Tanck works by day as a Realtor and just celebrated his one-year anniversary
with TTR Sothebys International Realty, which he says has been a wonderful
move for me professionally and personally.
Tanck was raised in Cobb Island, Md., and has been in the region his whole
life. Hes dating and lives in Adams Morgan. Tanck enjoys reading, art projects,
working out, home improvement, travel and spending time with his dog in his
free time.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

Badlands holds a very special place in

Describe your dream wedding.
Ive already had a big wedding. I think
that if I get married again, it would be a
very low-key aair probably just a few
friends/family members at a nice dinner.
What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
I get o on good design. Can be anything
from a corkscrew to a car. If something

What historical outcome would you

I came out later in life and it was not

Typically I try to avoid things with

zombie in the title. The genre leaves
me cold. But in the spirit of Halloween
I caught Unexpected Stage Companys
Zombie Prom at Randolph Road Theater
in Wheaton.
More corny than spooky, this early
collaboration from writing team John
Dempsey (book and lyrics) and Dane
P. Rowe (music), who went on to create
better known musicals The Fix and
The Witches of Eastwick, spoofs 1950s
fascination with teen romance, A-bombs
and clichd horror icks. Act fast if you
want to see it it closes Sunday, Oct. 30.
Set in Enrico Fermi High School (named
for the father of the bomb), Zombie
Proms book is slender to put it mildly:
Good girl Toee (a wide-eyed Julia
Klavans) falls for alleged bad boy Jonny
Warner (Will Hawkins). Pressured by
her parents and the schools despotic
principal Delilah Strict (Dallas Milholland),
Toee pliantly gives in and ends the
incipient relationship. Heartbroken, Jonny
throws himself headrst into the local
nuclear power plant. Hes buried at sea.
While Toee settles into a mopey grief
her friends are becoming increasingly
more interested in the schools upcoming
prom. And then, just when things are
getting back to normal, Jonny comes back
from the dead. Now a green-hued zombie
but otherwise unchanged, Johnny wants
to get back with his girl and nish senior
year. Principal Strict isnt keen on having
a walking cadaver in her school and tepid
Toee is unsure what to do.
Her feelings are less than passionate.
And our undead hero is hardly a hood.
Hes no Conrad Birdie or Danny Zucco
even. The most rebellious thing about
Jonny is that hes dropped the y from his
given name.
Turn down the volume and Zombie

Prom looks like a production of Grease.

Debra Leonard has costumed the casts
girls in ouncy skirts and colorful party
dresses, and the boys are wearing
Chuck Taylors and tight pants. William
T. Flemings raspberry and lime set
nicely lit by Gary Hauptman suggests
a veritable vintage high school. Perched
opposite the principals oce sits a terric
three-man band with a big sound. Led by
musical direction Brandon Heishman on
keyboards, the trio delivers a rock score
infused with some vintagey ballads and
girl group sounds.
A racy subplot involving love-starved Miss
Strict and sleazy reporter Eddie Flagrante
(Joshua Simon) whos landed on the scene
to cover the teen zombie story adds
some spice to the second act and rather
predictably turns the storyline on its head.
The show is undeniably facile, but this
Zombie Prom is partly redeemed by its
enthusiastic principles and an energetic
chorus featuring all the high school
types: Josh the nerd (Jordan Clark Halsey)
and a pair of dopey, girl-crazy jocks Joey
(Philip da Costa) and Jake played by
natural comedian RJ Pavel. Also on hand
are prudish Ginger (Stephanie Wilson),
sympathetic Candy (Kelsey Painter), and
hard-as-nails Coco (Katie Culligan) who sing
well and ably execute Jane Rabinovitzs fun
choreography, a fast-paced fusion of 1950s
and sti monster moves.
Staged by the companys co-founder
Christopher Goodrich, the production
loses its way when Jonny is coaxed to
appear on live TV with the cast taking on
stock early television types like the cheesy
emcee and the alluring girl singer. It
doesnt work. Zombie Prom is at its best
when the kids are back in school singing
and dancing alongside their returnedfrom-the-dead classmate.

If there were a Rainbow Oscar (like the

Queer Palm at Cannes), two of the leading
contenders for the 2016 prize would be
opening in D.C. this week.
Based on the 2002 novel Fingersmith by
Welsh lesbian novelist Sarah Waters, The
Handmaiden is a sizzling lesbian love
story cloaked in multiple layers of betrayals,
lies and reversals. Korean director Park
Chan-Wook has moved the action from
Victorian England to 1930s colonial Korea.
The result is a sumptuous and deeply erotic
psychological costume drama.
Ha Jung-woo is an evil Count who wants
to seduce the Japanese Lady Hideko (Kim
Min-hee), the innocent ward of Kouzuki
(Cho Jin-woong), her very rich and very
creepy uncle. To lure her in, the Count
hires the Korean pickpocket Sookee
(newcomer Kim Tae-ri) to become her
handmaiden. The ensuing tale of love and
revenge is fascinating.
The tale unfolds in three sections, told
from a variety of viewpoints, and therein
lies the one major problem with the
movie. There is a good bit of repetition
in the storytelling and the movie could
denitely benet from a lot of trimming,
especially in the middle section.
The dialogue is generally sparse, but
eective. The characters speak in both
Korean and Japanese; the (occasionally
hard-to-read) subtitles use dierent
colors for each language.
The cinematography and design are
lush and Parks direction is sure and
steady. The acting is uniformly superb.
The Handmaiden is a visual masterpiece
and a sensual delight, a feast for the
senses and a puzzle for the mind.
Moonlight is a beautiful and nely
detailed character study, a snapshot of
a young African-American man during
three stages of his tumultuous coming
out and coming-of-age process. Its also a

complex look at masculinity in the AfricanAmerican community, a thoughtful

examination of both the constructive and
destructive impacts of men trying to leave
their mark on the world.
The rst section focuses on Little (Alex
Hibbert), a young boy with every possible
disadvantage. Hes picked on by his
classmates who call him faggot, hes small
and scared to ght back and he lives in
poverty with his crack-addicted mother
Paula (Naomie Harris). Juan, the local
drug czar played by Mahershala Ali, takes
him under his wing, but Juans protection
is a mixed blessing; he teaches Little to
be proud and self-condent, but hes also
selling drugs to Paula.
The second section turns to Chiron
(Ashton Sanders) as a teenager. Juan is
dead, but his girlfriend Teresa (the singer
Janelle More) still tends to the boy.
The bullying has intensied, but Chiron
shares a moment of tenderness with his
friend Kevin (Jharrel Jerome) before an act
of violence shatters his world.
Section three turns to an adult Black
(Trevante Rhodes) who has also become
a drug dealer. He visits his mother in
rehab and arranges a reunion with his
estranged friend Kevin (now played by
Andr Holland).
The screenplay was adapted by
writer/director Barry Jenkins (a straight
ally) from a stage play by openly gay
MacArthur Fellow Terell Alvin McCraney
(Choir Boy and The Brother/Sister
Plays). The script eectively moves the
minimal story forward with little dialogue
(which is sometimes mumbled and hard
to understand). The silences are often
more eloquent than the words as the
laconic characters struggle to express
their thoughts and emotions.
The cinematography by James Laxton is
absolutely splendid, full of the vibrant colors
and the urban grit of Miami. Jenkins work as
director is ne; he gets great performances
from his cast and the storytelling is clear
and compelling. There are, however, a few
moments where the pace slips; a few cuts
may have made the lm even stronger.

Extreme Action
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY JOEY DIGUGLIELMO

PATRICK OCONNELL of the Inn at Little Washington, one of the few outside-the-District restaurants
to make the new Michelin Guide.

Quirks and quibbles from

the inaugural D.C. version
By KRISTEN HARTKE
Its been a couple of weeks since the
revered Michelin Guide to Washingtons
restaurant scene was released, giving us
time to drill down into its content and
consider what we can learn from our rst
experience under the watchful eye of the
Michelin Man and his anonymous cronies.
Were fortunate to live in D.C. during
a true restaurant renaissance, with
new options opening up at a somewhat
alarming rate (how many people can
possibly eat out enough to support all
these restaurants?), so the guide does
oer a new view and can point us toward
restaurants we might overlook simply
because they are stalwarts in other
neighborhoods (hello, Le Chat Noir and
Kafe Leopold, were looking at you).
Plus, maybe we have one or two
suggestions for Monsieur Michelin for
future editions.
We really like brunch but the
top restaurants dont. Of the 107
restaurants proled in the guide, 48
serve brunch, highlighting how popular
brunch is here in D.C. However, of the 12
restaurants that received coveted stars,
only one Blue Duck Tavern serves
brunch. #priorities
We dont have enough dim sum. The
guides legend includes a symbol to denote
a restaurant that serves dim sum and,
sadly, there are only two restaurants on
the list that do, only one of which, China
Chilcano, is in Chinatown, er, Gallery Place,
and its owned, ironically, by a Spaniard, Jos
Andrs. As Chinatown is now practically
devoid of Chinese food, this will come as no
surprise, but its a sad fact nonetheless.
You dont need a car to get a good meal
in D.C. But you knew that. Its ironic only
because the Michelin Guide was created by
a tire company in France in 1900, as a way
to encourage drivers to get out and about
in their cars (and, presumably, wear down
their tires so theyd have to purchase new
ones), yet visitors to the area are strongly
encouraged to leave their cars at home. Of

course, Uber drivers need tires and since

you really cant rely on Metro anymore
to get to or from dinner, even car-free
residents now need tires, albeit indirectly.
Michelin says theres a Near
Southeast neighborhood in D.C. that
covers both Navy Yard and Capitol
Hill. We beg to dier. While Navy Yard
is occasionally referred to as Near
Southeast, the Michelin Guide chose
to lump it together with Capitol Hill on
its map, calling the entire area Near
Southeast. Since only two restaurants
in the actual Navy Yard neighborhood
made the cut, while seven did on Capitol
Hill (including two restaurants that
received stars, chef Aaron Silvermans
Roses Luxury and Pineapple and Pearls),
it seems like Capitol Hill would have
actually been the correct naming choice,
and, thereby, less confusing to readers.
Shaw residents will also notice that they
apparently now live in Penn Quarter.
The only place worth going to for
dinner outside city limits is 70 miles
away. Dont tell that to chefs Cathal
Armstrong at Restaurant Eve in Alexandria
or Jeremy Homan at Preserve in Annapolis.
However, well give it a pass simply because
the only restaurant to land on the list
from outside D.C. was the Inn at Little
Washington, earning two stars for one of
our favorite chefs, the witty and meticulous
Patrick OConnell. While some have agitated
about the whys and wherefores of the Inn
being awarded two stars instead of the full
three, we think its just a matter of time
with only 13 three-star restaurants in the
entire country, its reasonable to think that
D.C. might not get any its rst time out.
Reviewers dont eat dessert. Or, we
think they didnt, because nary a mention
of our favorite pastry chef, Alex Levin,
made the guides review of Osteria Morini.
Sure, the pasta is good, but wed honestly
start the meal with Levins tortinos and
tartalettas if convention would let us.
How is this man still single?

Coming-of-age novel
is tender, alluring

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER has been reading

since she was 3 years old.She lives in Wisconsin
with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at
bookwormsez@yahoo.com.

Your mother called it an angels kiss.

Ugh. Lots of people are born with
birthmarks but you saw yours as a
aw and you hated it for years. Slowly,
though, you came to embrace it, to see
it as something that sets you apart, and
now you wouldnt erase it for the world.
As in the new novel, Miss Jane by Brad
Watson, its a part of who you are.
In her later years, Jane wasnt afraid of
anything. Oh, sure, she didnt care much
for horses or bodies of water until her
father taught her dierently, years ago,
but grown up, she was fearless. She just
lived her life by her Mississippi garden,
unafraid, and vexed by but accustomed
to the incontinence shed endured since
the day she was born.
Janes mother was too old to be having
another baby back then and everybody
knew it, especially Ida Chisolm. It was
1915, and Ida had already lost enough
children so she wasnt putting too much
stock in the life of thisun. When Jane
was born with something wrong down
there, Ida blamed herself for a good long
time, and never really did cozy up to her
youngest daughter.
Because of that, Grace, the oldest
daughter and the only Chisolm child left
at home, was saddled with babysitting.

It rankled her; everything did, in fact, and

even though she was barely old enough
to be in school, she knew right then that
motherhood was not for her. Even at that
tender age, Grace couldnt wait to get away.

When Jane was born, Sylvester Chisolm
was unsure what to call his child. Clearly,
she was a daughter but something was
wrong. Still, though men of his day never
fussed much about babies, Chisolm took
particular delight in his youngest. He
taught her about trees and birds, how to
sh and how to be self-sucient. Shed
need that.
For many years after Dr. Thompson
helped Jane into the world, he kept an eye
on her. He advised her, taught her about

LEGAL

Married couples need

powers of attorney, too
Debunking the 7 myths
of estate planning
By LAWRENCE S. JACOBS
(This is the sixth in a series of seven articles to help you understand what you do
know, dont know and should know about
estate planning.)
What is a power of attorney and why do
you need one or more? The answer is actually fairly simple. A power of attorney is
a document that is created while you are
well that allows other people to make decisions for you if there ever comes a time
when you are unwell and cannot make
your own decisions. It is so important because you can lose the right to decide who
will make decisions for you if something
bad happens and you havent put your
wishes in writing beforehand. Thats a big
deal for everyone, whether you are mar-

ried, in a domestic partnership, or single.

If you become incapacitated, state law will
determine who in your family has the power
to make medical decisions for you, even if
you are estranged from them. Of course,
even without a medical power of attorney,
your spouse will be able to make medical
decisions for you. But what if your spouse
cant for some reason? A good medical
power of attorney will grant the same rights
to other trusted people if your spouse cannot take care of you - and those people do
not have to be relatives. Perhaps your best
friend is a nurse or doctor or works at NIH. A
person like that would make a great choice
as a healthcare agent, if he or she is willing.
(You do need to ask first!) Naming your own
decision-maker can give you peace of mind
that your wishes will be respected versus
the unknown consequences of that role going to a faraway family member who doesnt
approve of your lifestyle.
Yet, the lack of a medical power of attorney is not what causes the biggest prob-

lem for most folks. If you become incapacitated, there will be hundreds of other
decisions to be made that have nothing
to do with medical care. Who will pay the
bills, manage your money, take care of
your home, and look after your spouse or
partner? Thats where a financial power of
attorney comes in. This document grants
important, broad rights to people that
you trust to manage all of your assets
when you cannot. Thats incredibly important because no one gets the right to access your personal assets automatically,
even a spouse. If you have a joint checking account, your spouse is still going to
be able to write a check even if youre
incapacitated, but thats the extent of it.
What if theres a need to withdraw money
from your retirement account to pay the
mortgage? Too bad, because without a
power of attorney, even your spouse will
be out of luck. Need to sell a house thats
no longer suitable? Same answer.
The messy workaround for not hav-

ing a financial power of attorney is that

someone has to go into court and file a
guardianship petition just to get the powers that you could have given in a simple
document. Thats a very expensive alternative in most states and one that should
be totally unnecessary. Worse yet, the
person filing the petition might not be the
same person that you would have chosen
had you signed a financial power of attorney. These problems are so easily avoided that the real mystery is how come everybody doesnt have these documents?
(This column is not intended to provide
legal advice, but only general guidance that
may or may not be applicable to your specific situation.)
