To all NHRA TV Production employees:
As you know, the stagehands’ union has been trying desperately to get you to become their
paying customers. Most recently the union filed a petition with the NLRB asking for a secret
ballot election among a small group of NHRA TV Production employees.
The purpose of the election would be for this small group to decide whether or not all of you
should be represented by the stagehands’ union and ultimately perhaps pay union dues in order
for you to work at NHRA.
This is now a legal process and as part of it we are now required to provide certain information
to you, to the government and to the union. For example, the law requires that we send you the
attached official notice from the government. As part of the process we are also required to
provide the government, and ultimately the union, some of your personal information like your
name, address, e-mail address, and telephone numbers. Normally we would never share this
information without your approval but unfortunately we are now required by law to do so.
As we said above, the union is trying to reduce the number of participants in the election to a
small handpicked group who will make this important decision that could ultimately impact all of
your jobs here at NHRA permanently and force some to pay.
As you know, our position is that a union is not necessary. Our preference is to deal with each
of you directly and individually, without you losing your right to make decisions about your job,
and hopefully without you possibly being forced to pay the stagehands’ union in order to
continue to work. Our opinion is that a union could ultimately affect our business through strikes,
labor disputes and corporate campaigns and boycotts.
To make this matter even more difficult, the union has now subpoenaed your personnel files,
including all information and documents like your wages, discipline, and all other data in those
personnel files, like date of birth, social security number and pay. We will of course object to
this, but you should be aware that ultimately we could end up having to provide your personal
information to the union without your consent.
It is actions like those above by this union that are among the many reasons why we don’t
believe the union is a good idea or in your best interests. Ultimately it will be your individual
choice.
We will continue to keep you posted as we deal with this disturbing and intrusive situation.
Meanwhile, you should feel free to ask us any questions that you have. For those of you who
will be in Las Vegas this weekend, I am available and will be there all day Saturday for
questions. You are also welcome to send me an email at: mgurrola@nhra.com.
Thank you,
