n this issue of Landscape were showcasing some

of the most innovative and yet simple garden
designs around the world. Renowned designer
Franco Zagari takes us to Rome to show off his
three-tiered courtyard garden built around a large
residential complex. On a much smaller scale, Craig
de Necker shares his design for a Mediterranean
garden build by The Friendly Plant. The design
features both fire and water as the main focal points
of the garden. The idea is to relax to the sounds of
the trickling water and enjoy the cozy atmosphere
created by the fire at night.

Towns under the title, Climate Change:
The Role of Cities will be held on 3 -5
December 2012 at Le Meridien Madina

Municipality.
Conference aims at improving the
environmental situation in Arab cities and
to help face the current challenges. We
hope it will offer the delegates a platform
for exchanging ideas and discussing the
role of cities in climate change including
strategies and initiatives across the region
said Obeid Al Shamsi after a review
meeting held in Dubai recently.
The conference is expected to bring
together more than 500 delegates leading
figures in the field from around the world
including government officials, corporate
heads, NGOs, companies, researchers and

In the Arab Region, the impacts of climate
change are clearly noticed, ranging from
longer and more intensive drought periods,
very less rainfalls and water scarcity.
It is crucial to recognize that cities and
urban population are not just victims
of climate change but also a part of the
problem. And if cities are part of the
problem, that means they must also be
part of any solution. It is time to focus
on integrating city requirements and
effective environmental management, a
key feature of the upcoming conference
continued Mohammed Al Noory.
He said conference will discuss on various
important topics including Green Life
Style, Green Economy ,Green Transport
and on legislation and control measures
for climate mitigation and adaptation.
The second edition of the conference was
held at Dubai in 2010.
It will be the continuation of successful

cooperation: On April 17 - 20, 2013,
Chinas most influential horticultural fair
will take place in Shanghai, for the second
time under the name of Hortiflorexpo IPM.
Hortiflorexpo and IPM ESSEN (the global
fair for horticulture) staged the first joint fair
in the Beijing Exhibition Center in 2012.
Hortiflorexpo IPM takes place every year,
alternating between Beijing and Shanghai.

The Shanghai World Expo Convention &
Exhibition Center is the newest and most
modern fair site in Shanghai and offers
optimum conditions for exhibitors and
visitors. Less than nine months before the
coming fair, the level of the registrations
is very good: For example, France, the

confirmed that they will each participate in
the fair with a cooperative booth.
German exhibitors will present themselves
on a cooperative booth which will be
promoted by the Federal Ministry of Food,
Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

An extensive supporting programme will
be offered parallel to the fair. Inspection

Lootah visits
beautification
project sites
in Dubai

Director General of Dubai
Municipality has recently visited
various sites in the city where
beatification and plantation projects,
undertaken by various department
with civic body , are going on,
informed officials with the civic body.
e was accompanied by Ahmed Mohammed AbdulKareem, Director,

Parks& Horticulture Department and Eng. Taleb Jalfar who heads
the Drainage& Irrigation Department at Municipality.
Lootah reviewed the projects and gave directions to the officials to

step up the pace of works to complete the ongoing projects at the earliest.
Dubai Municipally is committed to carry out all kind initiatives to make
Dubai one of the best among the global cities. We are co-coordinating with
various other government bodies in the Emirate to get the ongoing projects
finished at the earliest said Lootah after his inspection to the sites.
We are looking forward to maximize the numbers of green areas in the
city and that is a part of our development concept. A green city that offers a
healthy and comfortable atmosphere to citizens and visitors is our dream
added Lootah.
Mohamed Abdul Kareem said the ongoing projects include planting trees in
the road medians, beatification of corners of intersections, extension works
of irrigation pipes and lighting of parks.
The tour included a number of streets and intersections across the Emirate
of Dubai.
DM to set up crocodile park in Dubai

that the section studies the
possibility of establishing a
sophisticated crocodile park in
Dubai in the near future.

team from the investment section
to study the best practices of the world in
establishing specially designed parks for

crocodiles in France, Tunisia and Belgium.

The Municipality seeks to build a new world
tourist attraction in the emirate of Dubai through
the partnership with the foreign investors to
establish the crocodile park project in the event
of positive results of the study, Khalifa said.
Khalifa Abdullah Hareb, Director of Assets
Management Department said the proposed
project is first in kind in the Middle East
and not only an amusement park but also an
educational destination where the students
can learn everything about crocodile from
the park.

DM gears up to host
International Architectural
Conservation Conference
2012
Dubai Municipality has geared up to
host the third International Architectural
Conservation Conference and Exhibition,
which has been scheduled to take place
from 17-19 December 2012 in Dubai,
stated by Eng. Rashad Mohammed
Bukhash, Director of Architectural Heritage
Department.
ng. Rashad said that the conference will

be held under the theme of Architectural
Conservation: Present and Future, and will
gather international experts in the field of
conservation-restoration to exchange expertise and
new strategies for conserving historical zones and
buildings, protecting heritage sites and developing the
urban landscape in a sustainable manner.
Alongside the conference there will be an exhibition
to host the governmental, educational and private
companies working and serving in the field of
conservation of historical buildings.
In the light of rapid urbanization and within the
shadow of modernity, architectural heritage requires
rapid intervention from the international community to
not only save and protect it, but also realize its cultural
significance and instill its value in future generations,
Rashad said.
The purpose behind the conference is to serve the
professional conservation community involved in
scientific research, education and training, architectural
design, construction and field projects by providing
them a platform to unify their energies for the cause,
he said.
The papers for the conference are finalized and experts
at the helm of architectural heritage conservation are
invited to participate, from across the globe. In addition,
municipalities of the Gulf Cooperation Council
countries, professional associations such as those for
architects and engineers and national archaeological
museums would also submit their research papers and
presentations for the conference.
Bukhash announced the Organizing and Scientific
Committees to oversee the conduct of the programme
and undertake the task of publishing research and work
papers to be presented at the event.
Commenting on the themes of the conference,
Bukhash said that the conference will cover
discussions on policies, strategies and decision
making in historic environments through concepts and
advanced technologies; economics of conservation and
sustainable environment, cultural development and
awareness management of cultural heritage in historic
areas and project implementation and practical aspects
of urban conservation.

F
or the first time since its inception
in 2008, the World Architecture
Festival (WAF), which has
previously only been held in
Barcelona, will be held in Asias top
convention city, and emerging design
hub, Singapore early this October,
reported Dubai-based tourism officials.
Building on its success as a preferred
destination for Meetings, Incentives,
Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE),
Singapore will host more than 2,000
architects from 60 countries from 3 to 5
October as they compete and showcase
their creativity at WAF, with nine entries
hailing from the Middle East, two of
which are from the UAE. The event will
take place at Marina Bay Sands, a widely
acclaimed design and an architectural
icon in its own right.
WAF is the worlds largest architectural
festival and awards competition that is
dedicated to commemorating architectural
excellence and honouring design elitists
from all over the world. Considered by
the professional architectural community
as the worlds largest interactive global
architectural trade event, WAF convenes
some of the most established and wellrespected names in the industry including
Nabil Gholam from Nabil Gholam
Architects (nga) and Nasser Bader
Abulhassan from AGi Architects.
By exhibiting projects from the Middle
East, WAF has created a new degree of
awareness about architectural excellence
on a scene that is so thirsty for it, said
Gholam, who has been on the judges
panel since the first WAF took place
in 2008. Singapore is a focused and
dedicated design hub, and is capable of
putting significant wind in WAFs sails.
The 520 entries competing for the
WAF awards were shortlisted based on
architectural merit; among them are nine
innovative projects from the Middle East
including Etihad Towers and The Rock
Stadium in the UAE, The Valley City in
Qatar, King Abdullah Sports City Stadium
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Gunoot
Eco Resort in Oman and A Gateway to
Petra in Jordan.
Singapore is one of the most important
financial centres in the world, playing
a major role in international trade and
the global economy, said Abulhassan
whose firm won First Prize last year for
its Future Projects entry, Wafra Living
Kuwait, in the Residential Category. Its
ethnic and cultural diversity are a great
incentive, and the fact that there are many

Part of a mixed-use project developed in
partnership with Egypts Golden Pyramid
Group, Citystars Sharm El Sheikh will
feature a series of 10 saltwater lagoons,
covering a combined area of 100 hectares
and including the worlds largest lagoon,
to create a unique desert oasis and new
tourism landmark for the region.
The development, which is currently
under construction and expected to open
before the end of the year, will offer 1.2
million square metres of residential units,
hotels, golf courses, marinas, a museum
and a commercial centre.

What is the role of the Public Gardens

Department?
The most important role of the Public Gardens
Department is to create public gardens and parks
throughout the country according to the competent
municipality. The Department has now become
in charge of all the lands earmarked by the State
Properties Department for the creation of public
gardens. For this purpose, it communicates with the
different public authorities (Kahramaa- SanitationRoads- Communications- Urban Planning) to meet
the main requirements for developing the designs
and plans in preparation for putting the projects
out to competitive tender. Prior to this phase is the
allocation of the budget for such projects. The projects
are delivered to the competent municipality upon
their completion by the contractor as per the required
conditions and specifications.
Moreover, the Department carries out the following studies

prior to the project implementation phase:
Assessing the municipalitys needs for public gardens and parks,
turfs as well as street and square landscaping, in coordination with the
competent authorities.
Preparing preliminary studies and designs, developing
preliminary cost estimates for cities, public gardens and
parks beautification projects as well as preparing the tender
documents as per the municipalitys needs in this respect.
Taking the necessary measures to put the projects out to
tender and participating in the Bid Examination Committee in
the light of the relevant general and special conditions.
Researching the best ways to implement irrigation networks
and systems.
Designing street, square and fountain landscape as well as
beautifying passageways, sidewalks and unplanted areas within
the cities and villages.
Researching and monitoring the implementation of the public
gardens operation and management systems.
The Department also plays a role in the production of different
cuttings as follows:
Assessing and meeting the municipalities needs for
cuttings in public gardens, parks, turfs as well as street and
square planting.
Suggesting the types of trees, cuttings and flowers to be
planted in public gardens and parks.
Monitoring and managing government nurseries in order
to guarantee their smooth operation.
Developing the specifications and special conditions of the
seeds and cuttings whose sale or importation is suggested.
Producing different kinds of cuttings to meet the needs
of the municipalities and public, as well as of the different
government bodies and departments.
What are the Public Gardens Department plans for
public parks in Qatar?
For the time being, we are looking into the regions with no
public gardens. Furthermore, we are discussing with the
competent authorities the allocation and classification of lands
for creating gardens in the different regions and providing
services to meet peoples needs.
The Department has also concluded contracts to optimize
the gardens specifications.
New gardens will be created every year, and we seek to
cooperate with the municipalities gardening departments
to ensure the maintenance of the gardens and increase their
contents and utilities, in addition to their development and
landscaping.

We have just developed a complete study which
awaits implementation. It aims at developing the
Departments nurseries so as to make them model
nurseries.
Moreover, we are supervising the creation,
rehabilitation and development of public gardens
so that they include all kinds of utilities and
entertainment.
Will the department be placing stricter rules

and standards regarding Landscape and
irrigation design concepts regarding real
estate and urban master planning?
Several conditions have been adopted and applied
to garden creation and beautification projects, such
as selecting the kinds of seeds, irrigation networks,
types of soils and fertilizers in addition to the required
specifications of childrens toys and public utilities.
The selection of the seeds to be used is subject to
several conditions of which:
Choosing seeds with a very small amount of weeds.
Choosing seeds free of any disease (knowing that
there will still be a percentage requiring treatment by
hot water or chemicals).
Avoiding the use of broken seeds which are poor
in nutrients and hence affect the plants growth, and
choosing whole (unbroken) seeds instead.
Using hybrid seeds for more standardization as well
as for improving the colors and resisting diseases
(Hybrid seeds are undoubtedly much better than
regular ones considering the technology and efforts
that went into their production).
It is noteworthy here that the bags of seeds contain all
the needed information (amount of weeds in the seeds,
planting season, planting depth, need for sun or shade,
amount of water needed), hence making the selection
of seeds faster and more accurate.
What are the main challenges of the Public
Gardens Department?
Our target is not to create gardens per se, but rather to
be distinguished in the good quality we create.
In this respect, we seek to elaborate the adequate
plans and strategies for developing nurseries year after
year, while taking into account the municipalities
observations for future improvements.
Nurseries constitute the main source of plant
production and propagation so as to meet the countrys
forestation and landscaping needs. Therefore, our
vision is to help those nurseries reach integrated
production as well as high and developed efficiency.
This in turn will help reduce the need for buying

In your opinion, what changes need to be

adopted in the GCC landscaping industry to
become on a par with the rest of the world?
We are currently examining and implementing many
ideas, of which:
Including closed playrooms in public gardens.
Organizing events in cooperation with the different
authorities such as exhibitions and non-profit
associations.
Most importantly, people are being polled, their
actual needs examined and a comprehensive survey
carried out to identify all the ideas at different levels.
Many experiments are also being carried out to
hydrate or ventilate the inside of these gardens
and hence reduce the high temperatures in the
summertime. This will allow the public to make use of
these gardens all year through.
We have come up with many more ideas which will
hopefully find their way in the coming projects.
Water scarcity is amongst the biggest issues
our region is facing today. How does the
Public Gardens Department generally fulfil its
commitment to water conversation?
In your opinion, what are the most costeffective ways by which designers, architects
and planners can reduce water-wasting?
The Department is developing plans to reduce the
quantity of water used and minimize its waste by

When is the right time for irrigating?
How long should we irrigate?
Does the irrigation water obstruct any passageway?
Should we wait for the plant to fade or irrigate it regularly?
Are there any plans to distribute the irrigation
network?
Many methods are used to minimize water use, the most
important of which:
1- Using specific drought and heat tolerant plants which
require a small quantity of water.
2- Using sprinklers and drip irrigation systems (which only
use the quantity needed by the plant).
3- Irrigating in the early morning and in the evening.
4- Refraining from irrigating when the winds are strong.
5- Refraining from cutting the grass too short in order to
reduce water evaporation from the soil.
6- Using mulch (Placing a layer of dead tree leaves above the
soil to reduce water evaporation).
7- Using a special panel inside the soil to retain water.
8. Do you think that the international standards for the
landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they
easily be applied when executing projects?

Preparation of soil and grading: which is a big part of
landscaping business.
For example, the primary hazard including equipment
accidents, vehicle accidents to avoid that, employers
must train and certify all their operators.
Irrigation: it is used heavily in landscaping, for example
we use protective gloves & machinery must be thoroughly
inspected before use.
Hardscape construction: all safeguards must be used.
Planting: for example workers must wear gloves to avoid
hand injuries.
Tree care: as example, workers must wear a hard hat for
head protection & they must chainsaw trained.
What is the most frustrating aspect of your work?
And the most rewarding one?
Seeing people of different age categories and with different
interests in the public gardens makes me proud and happy
for this is a clear indication of the long way we have come
and of our achievements.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect is the obstacles that
stand in the way of implementing the projects and delay the
completion of the works.
Where do you see Qatar in 10 years from now with
respect to developments and landscaping?
Qatar Vision aims at making gardens a key constituent in
planning. The green cover undeniably plays a great role
in the living system by reducing thermal emissions and
purifying the atmosphere from industrial pollution and
exhaust emissions. Here, we should highlight the need
for raising public awareness about the importance of
agriculture and its great benefits to peoples health.

Can you give us a brief about your

educational background and your
experience in the GCC area.
I was brought up and educated in South
Africa. I graduated from the University of
Pretoria - Department of Architecture and
Urban Design with a Bachelor of Landscape
Architecture. After working in SA, the UK,
China and now the Middle East, I have
finally settled in Dubai where I have been
working for the past 5 and 1/2 years on
projects ranging from commercial/retail,
residential and hospitality with emphasis on
resort hotels.
When did LMS International first set
up business?
LMS is actually an offshoot of the parent
company run in Johannesburg by Mr.
Mark Young. The company started almost
26 years ago under the name Landmark
Studios, (hence the acronym LMS). With

the increasing projects developing
from the Middle East, Mark decided
to set up a presence in Dubai, initially
servicing the local UAE projects
but has gradually developed into
a regional landscape consultancy.
Although Landmark Studios worked
on projects in the Middle East since
2002, LMS International Dubai was
only established in 2006 and has been
fortunate to maintain momentum and
presence here in Dubai.
How has
your business
expanded since its inception?
With the focus on Dubai and UAE
projects during the boom years
leading up to 2008/2009, LMS was
fortunate to have developed close ties
with key architectural practices as
well as independent developers. With
a relatively small office (employeewise) and project-focused individuals,
we have always been able to deliver
a committed and personal service to
our clients and I believe this has paid

off in the long run. As a result of this,

LMS has branched out into the greater
GCC region in the past 2-3 years with
returning Client contracts, which
has helped us, diversify our project
portfolio as well as break new borders
in terms of our reach.
What are the main challenges
of doing business in the current
GCC market post recession?
With the uncertainly in the regional
real estate market and external
influences on the GCC economies
(European crisis etc), there is a general
hesitance to initiate projects. There
seems to be more interest shown than
12 months back but we sense a bit of
false promise as developers test the
market. I believe that the challenge
lies in convincing developers of the
importance of landscape as budgets
are carefully refined and trimmed. The
obvious recipient of these cuts being
the landscape on projects, no matter
the importance or stature. In saying
that, we firmly believe there is a bright

future for the landscape industry in the
GCC region as Clients begin to see
the benefits that landscape delivers to
projects, not only in terms look and
feel but the marketing value that it
adds in an industry (real estate) that is
becoming more and more competitive
in the GCC region.
In your opinion, what changes
need to be adopted in the GCC
landscaping industry to become
on a par with the rest of the
world?
I wouldnt necessarily say that we
need to play catch-up. The industry
here in the GCC has its own challenges
and parameters and as such, I believe
that we break new ground in many
respects, compared to the rest of the
world. The obvious challenge that
we confront on a daily basis from a
landscape morality point of view is
the requirements to sustain landscapes
in the pre-conceived notion of what

there should be a gradual shift away
from lush green landscapes to more
sustainable ones that respect the
climate generally. This of course
requires education and ultimately
help from the Government to support
such endeavours and streamline the
building codes to enforce it. Were
getting there step by step but perhaps
have a way to go yet.
Do you think that the
international standards for the
landscaping industry are too
rigid and unrealistic or can
they easily be applied when
executing projects?
Again this ties back to the regional
challenges and parameters that we
design in here in the GCC region.
When one talks about standards, I
believe that in terms of specifications

and testing standards some projects
meet them while others fall short
due to a number of reasons that
are often out of the Landscape
Architects control. When one refers
to statutory building code standards,
sustainability benchmarking and
the like, I believe many of the
international standards could be
upheld here (and in some cases are)
but cost and time on projects often
override these.
What is the most frustrating
aspect of your work? And the
most rewarding one?
Indiscriminate design changes but
ultimately delivering a project is
the best reward after what often
proves to be years of ones life, to a
happy Client.
Who are your major clients and

what major projects have you
been involved with on their
behalf?
Thats a slightly convoluted answer
since most of our direct contracts
are as a specialist sub-consultant to
larger Architectural and Engineering
consultancies however we have
executed successful projects with
Emaar, TDIC, MAF Properties,
DAMAC and Omran. Our project

each country has its own intricacies),
things will likely stabalise to a more
sustainable level of development.
Similar to what we have experienced
in Dubai in the recent past where the
delicate balance of demand versus
supply tries to right itself, so too
the remainder of the GCC countries
will experience much the same in
the future with perhaps exception
in Saudi Arabia where a burgeoning
economy and large local population
has the ability to sustain long-term
high energy growth. Landscape sits
right at the heart of all of this as the
GCC countries attempt to project a
sophisticated and healthy self-image
to the rest of the world. What could

be more convincing than to see green

cities with people experiencing and
interacting with the outdoors in an
urban context?
What about the real-estate
slowdown? Could that affect
the future of the landscaping
industry?
This is as much as perception as it
is a reality, slowing down in my
opinion means a realistic and sustained
growth rather than a halt to the
current momentum. The better design
consultancies (and suppliers and
contractors) will survive off the back
of their skills set that they have to offer.
While there may well be a thinning
out of the industry, it ultimately

means that the stronger elements will
survive and prosper long-term.
Finally, please conclude by
evaluating LMS International
position in the market and share
any relevant information about
current projects?
LMS International has and always will
be a slightly more boutique styled
landscape consultancy where our focus
rests on servicing top architectural and
engineering practices on primarily
high-end hospitality projects. While
this does not exclusively describe our
overall capabilities, it is where we
have found the greatest success and

the decision to move to London
to attain a Bachelors Degree in
Interior Design. While the subject
choice was an initial first step in her personal
self-discovery and an experimentation to
discover where her true passion lay, it was
not long into her first year that she realized
the design field was exactly the career
path she wanted to pursue. Shortly after
successfully completing her degree she
returned back to Egypt with the hope of
gaining some valuable work experience and
widening her exposure outside the confines
of the classroom, which was all she had
known. During those two years, she was
fortunate enough to play an integral role as
a team member in one of the biggest and
most renowned Design Houses in Cairo.
Having been given the privilege to work
on several impressive projects and having
gained widespread experience in various
functions of the firm, it seemed like the
natural progression for Alaa to further

her learning and continue to satisfy her

relentless thirst for knowledge in the field
of design. It was then that she enrolled
herself in the Garden Design program at the
Inchbald School of Design to compliment
the foundations she had previously built
and to gain an even more comprehensive
and holistic perspective, capturing the
multifaceted nature of both interior and
garden design.
Now a graduate of the Inchbald School of
Design, having reached and far exceeded her
expectations as a student, she believes it to
be yet another natural step in her progression
to continue on her journey to self-discovery
and enter the real working world with
enthusiasm and vigour. She hopes to put her
solid education to practice in a wide variety
of ways, in both private and public spaces.
As it is where here passion lays, Alaas most
central personal goal is to constantly be
keeping herself deeply involved in design
and always maintaining a dynamic, fresh and
creative mind.

Brief: the aim of this project was to
create a functional design for a public
space using a concept of my choice. I
chose a 5 acre plot of land spread along
the river nile. Currently a single purpose
wheat field envisioned to transcend into
a multi-functional public space.
Concept: the design is inspired by the
unique sites current existance - the
wheat fields and the organic nature
of the river nile. Simplicity was a key
aspect in design and playing with land
forms was the aim throughout. The park
is created to evoke the visitors 5 senses
as well as cleanse their minds from
cairos bustling traffic, and the toxic air
and sound pollution.

Ideas
The area for this designed
swimming pool, was not as
generous as most land sizes.
However, Space Landscape
Designs just looked at this as a
challenge, and utilised their design
knowledge to create a swimming
pool that feels larger than it is.
Materials were kept to a minimum,
and the shape of the pool very
simple. Interest and movement
has been made using a variety
of Bisazza mosaic glass tiles in a
random-blend pattern.
The garden beds are very
narrow and with the right plant
choice, they still feel generous
and lush. An outdoor kitchen was
added to the design, but that was
kept out of the main swimming
pool area. This provides the family
with all that they need to enjoy this
serene garden.

travel destination all-year round. With 285 extravagantly appointed
rooms and suites, The Meydan hotel changes our perception of travel
with unrivalled standards in luxury hospitality. The Meydan is a true
destination hotel and offers a myriad of iconic meeting venues ideal for
business and leisure travelers alike.
One of the grandstands major features is the integrated car park
facility a two-tiered structure with a capacity for 10,000 cars. The
design as you approach the track is of a falcon, which is a defining
symbol of the local heritage, and denotes decisiveness and speed.
Beneath its outspread wings, which spans 1.3 km in length, is the twotiered car park which is partially covered by the landscaped urban park
concourse at its third level where walkways and park furniture create
a safe pedestrian zone.
Ligman has artfully lit the landscape in a seemingly simple, yet
technically sophisticated way. Different luminaires work in concert to
illuminate the landscape and its architectural features. Ligman worked
in close relation with project consultants and lighting designers to
conduct an extensive analysis on the requirements for prescribed
lighting levels, operational hours, aesthetics and scenic setting, before
designing and delivering the solution which is practical and efficient in
function yet unobtrusive and harmonious with the landscape.
Compact portable floodlights installed using ground spikes uplight the
trees and plants as individual objects to break up the uniformity of
the landscape and to accentuate the unique qualities of each tree.
Rectangular wall recessed luminaire are used as decorative wall
guide lights along with low-wattage bollard lights to light up the drive
way. These light fittings are built with special, customized optical
compartment to avoid any discomfort glare and to provide a uniform
illumination on the application it is subjected to.
Other luminaires used in this project range from Inground uplighters
with required pressure withstanding load capacity in car path areas
to Area lighting luminaires, Wall up-down luminaires and Light linear
luminaires for dramatic highlighting of architectural facades. In addition,
multipurpose power LED floodlights accentuate the water features.
A consistent quality of light in terms of color rendering and temperature
alongside a varied palette of fixtures brings cohesion to the scheme and
ensures harmony between beauty and style. It perfectly complements
the landscape and helps complete the vision and intent of the project.

he project developed by Franco Zagari is located on the outskirts of Rome,

within a residential enclave over shadowed by a six-storey-high complex
set within an elliptical-shaped courtyard garden. Zagari is not only an
international renowned designer of parks and gardens but hes also the
author of several seminal publications on the discipline of landscape architecture.
The context of his intervention relates both to the entrance approach to the residential
units and also to the garage and ancillary facilities within the underground level.
Above all it deals with the external outlook of the apartments. The garden thus
represents not just a place of rest, but one based on intersections and observations as
viewed from the overlying units with the capacity of creating a specific identity to
the complex with two main objectives the formation of the genius loci or sense of
place and its interactive dynamic qualities.
The terrain is entirely artificial spread across three levels with graded steps to the
lawn, where there is an extensive range of vegetation ranging from Washingtonia,
Japanese cherry trees, Magnolias and diverse shrubs including species of ficus repens
and large steel pergolas covered with wisteria. The trees and palms are placed on
conical-shaped mounds of earth in order to create thicker sections where the bulkier
plants where planted in such a manner that they are supported upon the underlying
pilasters.

Zagari decided against the planting of bamboo groves, for

fear that the bamboo trees would be aggressively invasive and
would overwhelm the drainage channels and banana trees with
detrimental effects. It would also have adverse effects on the
trees in winter when the temperature drops. For the vegetation,
Zagari selected a rather original repertoire, placing emphasis
on exuberant and rich colours that would be visually alluring
whilst the cherry trees and magnolias were still growing.

black lines, and at the centre a
complementary system of brightly
coloured resin that instead crosses
the garden and leads to two lifts
servicing the garage level. To
provide greater continuity between
the different planes, a system of
large steel pergolas are planted
parallel to one another traversing
the steps in various shades of blue
and in anticipation of being totally
covered by the wisteria. The rows
consist of flat elements of various
heights that create a distinctive
profile resembling human legs in
motion - a movement that in unison
can be interpreted as some elaborate
body dance. The idea is that when

Imagine a sun-drenched afternoon in the

Mediterranean looking down from rocky hillsides at
the glistening azure blue waters of the Med... the clear
blue skies above bleaching the palette of greys, whites
and blues that surround you
ur garden reflects this distinctly Mediterranean

atmosphere. This is the kind of garden that
you might expect to find somewhere in the
Greek isles, perhaps in Santorini or Mykonos.
The rustic cladding and woodwork add to the theme,
which is punctuated by the use of greys, whites and
blues in the garden.
We selected composite decking boards in order
to fabricate our fence as well as to construct the
rustic awning over the patio. This provides a clean,
contemporary look, is environmentally-friendly and
maintenance-free.

Planting makes use of trees such as Olea

europaea and Buddleja saligna, shrubs and
perennials with blue or white flowers such as
Freylinia tropica, Agapanthus and Rosemarinus
officianalis to add a true flavor of the med.
Water and fire are two of the elements that one
can watch for hours on end. Their movement
is so magical and delicate, yet they both hold
enormous power. The fire provides warmth and
atmosphere to the area and the water feature
provides a relaxing background sound.

Our unique water feature is integrated with

a fire pit and is cantilevered over the pond
below. Water gently flows from the fire pit,
over a rim into the water underneath. We
used glass mosaic in order to bring in some
vibrant colour and to include more of the
colours of the Mediterranean.
Our fire pit uses a gas fire pit burner in order
to provide a smokeless fire that is beautiful
to look at and easy to maintain.
The fire pit provides the area with a cozy atmosphere

and can also be used for outdoor cooking a must
for those warm summer evenings!
The centerpiece behind the seating area is a
commissioned artwork, depicting the summer
sky. The blue and white tones in the painting work
well to bring together the other colours found in
the garden. This artwork has a small space in the
frame in which fresh herbs can be placed in order
to form a mini landscape. We chose rosemary in
order to provide a pleasant fragrance to the area.
This garden is a place for contemplation and
relaxation, allowing one the opportunity to enjoy
watching the world go by in our fast-paced
world where email and phone calls can find you
almost anywhere, this is a garden that makes it
easier to simply switch-off and relax.
