The internet is an extremely useful tool and source
But the internet is such a vast place danger is all around
We will explore:
The platforms of potential danger
The most common problems in cyber safety today
Plus tips and tricks about how to stay safe

Social Media

Become increasingly important and predominant in our lives


It is a large forum for people to present themselves and contact others
There are many dangers lurking within these sites
Misconception of parents is if they friend their child they can monitor use
In actuality there are various privacy settings
That hide content
Block the view of some users
Allow direct messages to be received

Online Gaming

Web allows multiplayer opportunity for gaming


Ranging from friends next door to strangers around the world
Content can be a concern as well as the contact
There are message features that allow anyone with the players gamer ID
or user/screen name to directly message them

Search Engine
Popular engines
Google
Yahoo
Bing
Danger can be an unintentional stumble across unwanted content
The danger is the exposure
Search engines can lead us into danger on the internet

Cyberbullying
Takes various forms including:
Hateful messages
Threats
Spreading lies
Bash websites
Nasty comments
Humiliating videos
42% of children say they have experienced this
58% of those do not tell parents or adults
Cyberbullying can be anonymous
Girls are much more likely to be victims of cyberbullying

Sexual Predators
Children are at a great risk to fall victim to sexual predators online
Online access gives them easy ability to conceal their identity and gives
ability to roam with limitless access
Given access to centralized information: pictures, interests
Groom themselves to fit or match the child's interests and likes
They allow children to get invested in them
They hide behind computer screens

Pornography

It has become increasingly accessible and available


Anyone is just a click away from accidental or intentional porn viewing
Porn sites get more visits each month than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter
Effects are harmful to the viewer themselves as well as relationships
Lead to acting out
Sexual aggression
Objectification
Negative emotional health of children
Negative mental health of children

Sexting
Is the act of sending sexually explicit messages including
Photos
Text messages
Email
The exchange can be between peers
The exchange can be between a predator

Oversharing
Sharing too much information online
Photos
Location
Personal information
Can damage peoples reputations, get passed over for a job/internship
opportunities, lose scholarship opportunity
Can attract financial and sexual predators
Things online are forever

Best thing to do is to talk to your children, INFORM


Inform those around you about the dangers
Install filter or blocking software
Emphasis the use of privacy settings
Dont be too personal online
ANYTHING POSTED OR SENT ONLINE IS FOREVER
