Assignment Brief

Learning Outcome (LO)

Scenario
You have been employed by Biz Designs as a junior communication architect. Your manager wants you to
assist him with certain projects for the overall effective communication and web design of the websites. You
are required to research the best practice and suggest relevant wireframes and communication architecture.
You will be required to present your work to your manager and other team members working for the project.
Learning Outcome 1
Assessment Criteria P1
1.1: Task 1 (P1)
Carry out research and prepare a report that explains the following web concepts and their function to your
team members who would have little or no knowledge of the subject. Your descriptions of each item must be
clear but not too highly detailed.

How Internet Connection is enabled.

What is webhosting and how it works?
What are domain names and structures?
Preferred web design software to use (Dreamweaver, WebPlus, CoffeeCup)
TCP/IP
email applications

Evidence: Report (Max 550 words, +/-15% )

Learning Outcome 2
Assessment Criteria P2, P3, M1 & D1 are assessed in this task.
2.1: Task 1 (P2)
Produce a headed, sectioned information document to explain the difference between static web sites and
dynamic web sites making clear reference to the differing application development platforms to aid your
explanation.
Having explained the difference between dynamic and static websites, comment on how these differences
can affect website performance and why. Provide examples of dynamic websites for reference purposes.
This document is for general reading and therefore should contain enough technical language to give a clear
explanation but not so much as to alienate a non-technical reader.
Evidence: Report
(300 words minimum, +,-15%)
Task 2 (P3, M1 D1)
As the internet has become more popular, criminals and prestige seeking hackers have used a variety of
techniques to compromise web servers. Prepare a presentation that identifies some of the main threats to
2

web servers and what steps can be taken by website hosts and website owners to protect against these
threats in order to maintain good website performance and keep data secure.
Within your answer, specify some of the obligations of website or server owners in regard to the storage of
data.
For M1, you can choose any two business websites in a specific industry after discussion with your tutor and
compare and contrast the existing websites performance and security.
For D1 you need to discuss the impact that cases of website security breaches have had on society. Explain
the positive or negative impact. For cases you can consider:
-

Viruses, Trojans and worms

Hackers (e.g. Adrian Lamo, Kevin Mitnick, MafiaBoy)
Identity theft (e.g. Abraham Abdallah)

Evidence: Ppt Presentation

Learning Outcome 3
Assessment Criteria P4, M2 are assessed in this task.
3.1: Task 1 (P4, M2)
Part A Select one of the professional web design projects provided by your tutor as your web project.
Part B - Produce a technical specification for the construction of that website indicating which coding
standard you will be using and why. Explain why your styling will be applied using CSS and why this makes
a website more efficient to build and maintain.
Include the following with your specification:
1. An outline of what the site is about, its goals and your research on what else is already published on the
internet in this subject area.
2. Produce clear website specs
3. To achieve M2, produce a wireframe diagram explaining how your suggested wireframe will perform
better than the existing website
Evidence: Report (Min 150 words/ +,-15%) and Wireframe

In the presentation, explain what steps you will take to carry our acceptance testing on the website? You can
