Task1.3
Earth work Preamble

The rates and prices for earth excavations including dredging shall be for all types of
ground condition encountered except rock but including ground situation above or below
water level. The contractor shall make allowances for the possibility of permission not
being granted to use of the explosives for blasting and other operations.

Quantity of material excavated as the product of the horizontal area of the base of
permanent work to be constructed and the mean depth below ground level or measured
as the volume to be occupied by permanent work below ground level, whichever is the
greater. In no case shall any of the following quantities be included in the measurement for
payment.
volume of excavated unsuitable material shall be measured as the actual volume of
material removed as directed by the Engineer
excavations work performed prior to the taking of measurements of the undisturbed
natural ground
material excavated outside the vertical planes of neat outline of foundation
structures unless shown otherwise on the drawings
Concrete preamble
Concrete required for major structural construction shall be readymix concrete
and subject to Engineers approval. The unit rates for provision and
placing of concrete shall include but not limited to following items.
Provision of storing, mixing, transporting, placing and compaction mechanical means or
Batching Plants expect the supply of construction materials (Sand, Cement, and Aggregate
shall be supplied by building departmen). The water or any ice required shall be supplied by
. the contractor provision and removal all shuttering/ form work, scaffolding as required
curing of the concrete and all other measures to protect freshly poured concrete beating
from direct sunlight and wave action

45

Task 1.3
The unit rate for supply and placing of concrete shall include the cost of preparing, fitting,
fixing of shuttering/form works with necessary scaffolding in all cases since no separate
item would be included in the Bill of Quantities for measurement and payment of form work.
Supply of necessary materials, equipment for preparing fitting fixing of formworks, scaffolding
materials shall be procured by contractor and shall be include in the unit rate of concrete
the cost thereof for supply of necessary materials, equipment for preparing fitting fixing of
formworks, scaffolding shall be deemed to be included in the rates for concrete work.

Task 1.4
Specification for form work
Reference standard : Unless otherwise specified, formwork and
reinforcement shall comply with the relevant IS Codes and in absence of BS codes
Materials for formwork : Formwork shall be constructed of timber
. Ties shall be of the rod and cone orother approved proprietary type.
Ties for use in water-retaining structures300mm thick or less shall incorporate
a diaphragm not less than 50mm dia welded to the mid point of the tie,
designed to prevent water passing along the tie.
Erection of formwork : Faces of formwork in contact with concrete
shall be free from adhering foreign matter, projecting nails and the like, splits
or other defects, and all formwork shall be clean and free from water, dirt, or
other foreign matter.
Except where the surface is subsequently to be rendered, formwork in
contact with the concrete shall be treated with a suitable non-staining release
agent before the steel is fixed or the concrete placed to prevent the concrete
adhering to it. Care shall be taken to prevent the release agent from touching
the reinforcement or concrete at construction joints. Surface retarding agents
shall not be used unless specified.
All exposed exterior angles on the finished concrete of 90 degree or
less shall be given 20mm by 20mm chamfers.
Formwork shall be provided for the top surfaces of sloping work where
the slope exceeds fifteen degrees from the horizontal unless otherwise
specified, and shall be anchored so that the concrete can be properly
compacted and to prevent flotation. Care shall be taken to prevent air being
trapped.
Where ties are built into the concrete for the purpose of supporting
formwork, part of any such supports shall be capable of removal so that no
part remaining embedded in the concrete shall be within 50mm of the surface
in the case of reinforced concrete or 150mm in the case of unreinforced
concrete. Holes left after removal of such supports shall be neatly filled with
epoxy or well rammed dry-pack mortar.

47

building measurment

Advanced

Removal of formwork : Formwork shall be so designed as to

permit easy removal without resorting to hammering or levering against the
surface of the concrete.
The periods of time elapsing between the placing of the concrete and the
striking of the formwork shall have regard to the following factors:
concrete strength, stresses in the concrete during construction including for precast,
units any disturbance and handling stresses, curing, subsequent surface treatment
requirements, the presence of re-entrant angles requiring early removal of
formwork to avoid thermal cracking.
The time shall be as approved by the Engineer after consideration of
the loads likely to be imposed on the concrete and shall in any case be not
less than the periods specified in the Code.

Specification for reinforcement

Steel for reinforcement must be tor BS 420
Accessories : Spacer blocks for maintaining concrete cover to
reinforcement shall be of concrete of the same strength, durability, porosity
and appearance as the in-situ concrete. They shall be cast in the form of a
truncated cone or pyramid with the smaller face having a minimum dimension
of 50mm.
Chairs and other accessories for maintaining reinforcement and
prestressing tendons in position shall be of steel. Binding wire shall be No.16
gauge (1.60mm) galvanized iron wire free from corrosion.
Cutting and bending of reinforcement : Bars shall be bent in
accordance with the provisions of BS Code. Bending shall be carried out
slowly, at a steady even pressure, without jerk or impact.
The temperature ofthe steel at the time of bending shall be not less than 5 0c
If necessaryreinforcement maybe warmed to a temperature not exceeding 100 0c
to facilitate bending, after which it shall be allowed to cool slowly in air. Hot bars
48

Advanced

building measurment
shall not be cooled by quenching with water. Bent bars shall not be re-bent
unless permitted by the Engineer.

Task 1.4
Fixing of reinforcement : All reinforcement shall be securely and
accurately fixed in positions shown on the Drawings using approved concrete
spacers, spacer blocks or chairs.
These shall be not more than 1m apart and
at closer intervals if necessary. All intersections of bars shall be secured with
soft iron wire, the ends being turned into the body of the concrete.
The contractor shall ensure that all reinforcement is maintained in correct position
at all times, particular care being taken during placing of the concrete.
Concrete cover to reinforcement shall be as detailed on the drawings
and shall be maintained in accordance with the tolerance.
Top reinforcement in slabs shall be maintained in position by chairs, sized and
spaced to provide adequate support and fixity for the reinforcement.
No part of the reinforcement shall be used to support formwork,
access ways, working platforms or placing equipment, or for the conducting of
an electric current other than as pole of an earthing system during the site

the cost of the building project. So quantity surveyors must know about the construction law.
This assignment helps me to get a clear picture about the most important areas inthe advance
building measurement. From task one I could gain knowledge prepare the bill of quantity,
prepare the taking off and preambles notes of substructure, super structure, and roof structure
also. . Under task two concerns mainly about the plumbing finally under task three concerns
mainly about the electrical.
This assignment is very use full for the future of myself because it is covered all necessary
information about the advance building measurement subject. This subject helped a lot to get
