Assignment Brief
Clear statement of the work that students are expected to undertake:
Introduction:
Students should use the contact time in the module for basic engagement with the issues
but they will be expected to carry out further reading, both directed and independently.
Nature of the submission required:
1. Assessment 2: a 3000 word essay
Background information:
Students will interface with developing theory in the online teaching, but will be expected to
put forward their own proposals based upon further independent research and consideration
of practical project management issues.
Assessment Details:
Part 2: Project Management (People) [worth 50%]
1. In addition there is also a research based assessment.
2. For this assessment you will write a 3000 word essay on the following topic:
Explain and evaluate the procedures and tools that enable the project manager to create
the right atmosphere, in a geographical dispersed team, to allow the project team members
to perform at their best resulting in overall project success
3. Please remember that you must properly reference your work using the Harvard
Northumbria/ APA 6 output style [see Cite them right and the Library website].
Learning Outcomes assessed in this assessment:
Students should be able to:
4. Analyse and evaluate the composition of project teams, the factors that lead to
effective team performance and the stages in team development.

5. Evaluate the factors that influence leadership and management and the importance
of adopting different styles in different situations.
6. Evaluate interpersonal communication, behaviour and the importance of motivation
within the project environment.
7. Analyse conflict within project teams and between project organisations.
Assessment Criteria/Mark Scheme:
Assessment 2 will be marked against the following, [see the attached marking sheet]:
The understanding of the theory: 20%
The ability to critically analyse theory: 40%
The ability to produce a well-judged academic discussion: 40%
Referencing Style:
References must be provided in Northumbria Harvard/APA 6 format. The reports will be
marked to the same stringent criteria as the dissertation, so high marks will be attained in
presentation for citing correctly and referencing accurately. A wide range of references
should be consulted in order to form a coherent, well-argued piece of academic work.
Expected size of the submission:
The word count should be provided on the cover sheet of the submission and should not
exceed:
Assessment 1: 3000 words
The penalties for exceeding this limit:
Ten marks will be deducted from the overall student mark for every additional 250 words
over the limits given above.
NB: A ten percent deduction of awarded marks may be less severe than ten marks (i.e. 60%
achieved = final mark of 54% with deduction rather than 50%)
Assignment weighting:
Assessment 100% (will be reduced to 50% when calculated with Process component
assignment)
Academic Rigour
For all of these tasks, full academic referencing from any sources used is to be provided in
the
references section at the end of the assignment. It must follow the Northumbria University
guidance contained within the Cite them Right publication (Pears and Shields, 2008). In
other
words, everything should be traceable to the sources used.
Failure to submit:
The University requires all students to submit assessed coursework by the deadline stated in
the assessment brief. Where coursework is submitted without approval after the published
hand-in deadline, penalties will be applied as defined in the University Policy on the Late
Submission of Work. https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/static/5007/arpdf/lateappr

REFERRAL
Referral will involve the student re-submitting the part or parts of the assessment which they
failed to a pass level.
