WEATHER 101 By: Doppler Dave Speelman

The Hottest in 16 Years!

Last weekend was one to remember. I will not forget
Sunday, June 6, 2010 as being the hottest temperature
I ever felt being in El Paso. We reached 110 degrees
and blew away the old record of 105 in 1996. The last
time it was that hot was July 1, 1994 when we reached
111. The hottest temperature El Paso ever recorded
was 114 set back on June 30, 1994.

Anytime you see temperatures that hot, if there

is any moisture hanging around, you can witness thun-
derstorms by what we call breaking the cap or lid.
This can happen even though we have strong ridge of
high pressure on top of us (keeping skies clear and temperature hot). Thats what
happened last Sunday afternoon when those storms erupted and the wind cranked
up. Let me explain.
Normally, the sun heats the ground, which in turn heats the air just above it. Ther-
mals form when this warm air rises into the cold air (warm air is less dense than
cold air), a process known as convection. A convective layer such as this has the
potential for cloud formation, since condensation occurs as the warm air rises and
cools.

A capping inversion occurs when there is a boundary layer with a normal

temperature profile (warm air rising into cooler air) and the layer above that is an
inversion layer (cooler air below warm air). Cloud formation from the lower layer
is "capped" by the inversion layer. If the capping inversion layer or "cap" is too
strong (too close to the surface), it will prevent thunderstorms from developing. Weather Trivia:
However, if the air at the surface is unstable enough, strong updrafts can be forced
through the capping inversion. This selective process of only allowing the strongest What was the hottest temperature ever recorded in the United

when the winds switched around to the southeast
and allowed some moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico to enter. Big storms blew up in Hudspeth
and Culberson county, a section of the atmosphere
where the lid was the weakest.

El Paso didnt receive much rain out of this severe storm, although the
wind really cranked up. Gusts were reported anywhere from 50 82 miles per hour.

his forecasts at 4, 5, 6 and 10 pm on ABC-7 (channel 6 cable). If you would like Doppler

With age and good taste come certain inhibitions that keep
us from engaging with one another as fully as we could.
This week, some of those inhibitions will be lifted when
Venus travels into the land of Leo. One does not have to be
a teenager to experience the indelible qualities of young
love. The unrefined, immature, silly and playful side of ro-
mance will stir up scenarios that won't soon be forgotten.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You'll work with those who like
to talk things through, weigh the consequences and speculate
about the end result of every decision. In contrast, you just do
what feels right. It will benefit you to listen to the logic others
present it's a good education. However, you'll still do what
feels right, regardless of the rest.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). This week loosens up your

working process. Stream of consciousness writing, speaking
or drawing will get you into a very creative mode. What
comes to you will be brilliant but maybe not the first
thing, or the first three things for that matter. As you muddle
on though, you'll connect with true inspiration.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Staying on task won't always

ensure that a job will get done. And actually, you're likely to
discover that some things just aren't worth doing in the first
place. This week brings many a lengthy, loopy detour both in
your actions and in your conversations. Rambling on can be
