20CRITICAL MASS:
WITH OUR ROOTS IN RESISTANCE,
FORGING A JUST FUTURE
Our student Palestine solidarity movement i at a pivotal point. Confronted with
forms of repression both old and new, we most draw on our history of grassroots
organizing to develop ways of effectively and proactively responding to this
backlash while channeling our remarkable energy and focus towards our ultimate
goal of liberation for Palestine and all oppressed peoples. We have reached a
Critical mass, with the people-power to shape the national conversation and affect
real change, but we need to consider how to effectively build on this momentum,
How can new SJPs emerge and gain traction with help from experienced chapters
‘working to push our movement forward? How can we fortify and sustain our
solidarity work within the current sociopolitical atmosphere? The 2016 National
Conference offersa space for us to refocus, bolster our network, and strategize
forthe long term.
“The 2016 National S]P Conference will achieve the following goals:
1. Building a Sustainable Structure: As we transition into @ new structure
this year, students will be able to connect with their region’s Coordinating
‘Committee members to brainstorm, voice needs, input feedback, and
establish closer relationships. By institutionalizing region-based democratic
representation, we will collectively be able to envision, strategize for, and
strengthen the future of our movement over the next 5, 10, and 15 years
2. Mobilizing Alongside & Beyond Divestment: As many schools make
strides in divestment, we need to develop tangible goals and strategies to
follow their successful campus BDS campaigns. Meanwhile, we know that
divestment is one of many pathways to change that SPs can pursue. We will
explore ways of working alongside and after BDS initiatives to capitalize on
the diverse experiences and skills of our campus groups and to evolve as a
‘movement,
5. Skill Sharing: We will offer skills-based trainings for and by students in key
categories like coalition building, responsible media and press engagement,
fundraising retaining institutional memory, combatting normalization, and
defending our legal rights as student activists, Students involved in successful
campaigns wil ead a variety of BDS-oriented workshops on topics like
divestment, consumer boycotts, week-long event planning, and more. These
‘workshops will allow participants to return to their respective campuses with
the tools, connections, and motivation o build new campaigns or fortify
‘work already underway.
4. Reviving Our Roots: We will take time to situate SJP within a history of
struggle against oppressive power. As we grow our movement on campuses,
‘we will continue to connect our work to non-student communities, the
¢greater movement for justice and liberation both here in the U.S. and
slobally, and the Palestinian student movement history that has led us to this
‘critical point. As we learn from and with our hosts at GMU SATA, we will
revisit and reaffirm our founding principles so we may organize with purpose
and deliberately expand our political thought and imagination,
