Singapore( i /spr/),officiallytheRepublicofSingapore,andoftenreferredtoastheLionCity,the
GardenCity,andtheRedDot,isasovereignstateandglobalcityinSoutheastAsia,andtheworld'sonlyisland
citystate.Itliesonedegree(137km)northoftheequator,southofthesouthernmosttipofcontinentalAsiaand
peninsularMalaysia,withIndonesia'sRiauIslandstothesouth.Singapore'sterritoryconsistsofadiamond
shapedmainislandalongwith62otherislets.Sinceindependence,extensivelandreclamationhasincreasedits
totalsizeby23%(130km2),anditsgreeningpolicyhascoveredthedenselypopulatedislandwithtropical

In1819,SirStamfordRafflesfoundedcolonialSingaporeasatradingpostoftheEastIndiaCompanyafterthe
establishmentoftheBritishRaj,theislandswerecededtoBritainandbecamepartofitsStraitsSettlementsin
1826.DuringWorldWarII,SingaporewasoccupiedbyJapan.ItgainedindependencefromBritainin1963,by
