MARLEHAN BIN MOHAMED Says:

Interview between Marlehan (interviewer) and Amirul (respondent) on the purpose of

studying PhD
Marlehan:
OK, Assamualaikum Amirul, aaah yes I have a couple of questions to you
about this
aaah, on a, what do we call? Brief interview aaah well my first
question is aaah what
motivates you to study up to PhD level considering
that you're still very young?

Amirul:

Haha (laugh lightly). W'slm, firstly because you know, I got inspired by my seniors,
there's a senior, he's now continuing his study in London ahem! and then also
aaaah I
also get motivated by my family especially my mother because she's the
one who
always, you know, keep pushing me to further my study into this level
you know,
because she said that there will be more advantages when I got my PhD
level and then I
pursue my career in academic so on.

Marlehan:

I see. But you see that aaah of course PhD is full course aaah is full of research.......

Amirul:

Yeah yeah

Marlehan:
know

and of course, do you have good experience prior to this in research aspect as you
that under graduates are full of course works,

Amirul:

Yeah yeah

Marlehan:
partial

and if you take up Masters Study, you have a partial coursework and you have a
research, so how confident are you to jump in straight with this full research mode?

Amirul:

OK aah, actually I did my Masters in coursework mode, and then but my supervisor,
she's the one who actually give a title to me which was actually aaah a title for a
PhD
student at that time, but then she said that aaah I can do the research, so
she just like give
it to me so, even though I did my study in coursework mode, but then I
have so much
experience in doing the full research, dissertation and so on, you
know, and then I've got
aaah very very huge amount of data that's about 77 and 400, 77,000
data I did.

Marlehan:

You said that you Masters Study was full coursework....

Amirul:

Yeah, full coursework.

Marlehan:

So when did you take opportunity to learn research?

Amirul:
my
take 5

Actually, aah it's quite, very very very hard moment for me at that time because I did
coursework, I have to take like 5 subjects in one semester that is like very very risk
situation for me because usually you have to take like 3 or the most 4 but then I
and then I still have research which I have to conduct in.........

Marlehan:

You mean, there's a research component in your Masters study?

Amirul:

Yeah, yeah.

Marlehan:

Oh! OK, OK.

Amirul:

It's called academic writing.

Marlehan:

Academic writing? And it's that towards the end of the, of the study structure?

Amirul:

Yeah, yeah it's like compulsory, we have to take it and then for academic study 1, you
have to finish your chapter 1 to 3, and then in academic study 2, you have to finish
everything until the end.

Marlehan:

I see, so this academic writing is towards the end of the study...

Amirul:

Yeah!

Marlehan:

Aaah! OK so, you have the first part as the coursework and then the later part as a
dissertation, the so called, can I say something like a mini dissertation?

Amirul:

Aaah, yeah yeah

Marlehan:

Aaah, so what sort of study did you do in your Masters?

Amirul:

You mean subjects....

Marlehan:

For, for research....I'm talking about research.

Amirul:

Aaah, so are you talking about the...........

Marlehan:

What were you studying in your Masters research?

Amirul:

What I did for my research, OK. I did, I touched a bit about Bilingual policy, which was
implemented by the Ministry of Education.

Marlehan:

Bilingual!

Amirul:

Yeah! Bilingual.

Marlehan:

What does it stand for?

Amirul:

Aaah, it's called MBMMBI or "Memartabatkan Bahasa Melayu, Merperkasakan

Bahasa Inggeris".

Marlehan:
you're

Wow! that sounds good, OK, so I mean, do you have a research team with you or
doing this study alone?

Amirul:

No...

Marlehan:

I mean last time.

Amirul:
OK, I did my study alone but I've got a lot of guides from my lecturer, Dr Hamidah
then
she's the one who always, you know, give a lot of information for me,
motivation for me
to keep on finding more data to complete my research.

Marlehan:

Briefly, tell me more about the study?

Amirul:

The study in.....

Marlehan:

The specific research, your research.

Amirul:

For my Masters?

Marlehan:

Yes, yes.

Amirul:
and
and

OK, and then the main component for my research was about the Bilingual Needs
Bilingual Education in 3 higher education providers, I've selected UKM, UITM
UNIKL so, I've got a total of 300 respondents.

Marlehan:

Wow!

Amirul:

So, there's about like 300 questionnaires with, for one questionnaire, I've got like 10
pages, so it's like very very thorough data so I can cover many things from that.

Marlehan:
higher

I see. So the purpose is to encourage aaah the use of aaah Malay language in the
learning institutions.

Amirul:

Aaah both languages actually

Marlehan:

Both languges

Amirul:
be just excel

Because the main expression for the Ministry of Education for the students is, the
student must be able to be proficient in aaah both languages. So they cannot
for BM but then got bad grade in BI and so on.

Marlehan:

Thank you very much for your time.

Amirul:

OK, thank you.
