DemocraticPartynominee,formerSecretaryofStateandformerSenatorHillaryClintonfromNew
York,andherrunningmate,SenatorTimKaineofVirginia.TheUSElectionsProjectestimatesthat
131.7millionAmericanscastaballotin2016,outof231millioneligiblevotersaturnoutrateof56.9

2016wasthefifthelectionsince1820inwhichtherecipientofapluralityofthepopularvotedidnot
becomepresident,after1824,1876,1888,and2000.[a][3]Votersselectedpresidentialelectors,whoin
turnwillvote,basedontheresultsoftheirjurisdiction,foranewpresidentandvicepresidentthrough
theElectoralCollegeonDecember19,2016.[10]Clintonwasthefirstwomaninthehistoryofthe
UnitedStatestowinthenominationofamajorpartyandapluralityofthepopularvote,with47.8%of

TheseriesofpresidentialprimaryelectionsandcaucusestookplacebetweenFebruaryandJune2016,
staggeredamongthe50states,theDistrictofColumbiaandU.S.territories.Thisnominatingprocess
wasalsoanindirectelection,wherevoterscastballotsforaslateofdelegatestoapoliticalparty's
nominatingconvention,whointurnelectedtheirparty'spresidentialnominee.Businessmanandreality
televisionpersonalityDonaldTrumpbecametheRepublicanParty'spresidentialnomineeonJuly19,
2016,afterdefeatingU.S.SenatorTedCruzofTexas,and15othermajorcandidatesintheRepublican
primaryelections.[11]FormerSecretaryofStateandU.S.SenatorfromNewYorkHillaryClinton
becametheDemocraticParty'spresidentialnomineeonJuly26,2016,afterdefeatingU.S.Senator

Atotalof29thirdpartyandindependentpresidentialcandidatesappearedontheballotinatleastone
state.FormerGovernorofNewMexicoGaryJohnsonandphysicianJillSteinrepeatedtheir2012roles
