Unit Title: Rules of Algebra

Name: Suzzette Panduro

Content Area: Algebra 1

Grade Level: 9-12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning. [Master linear; learn as general
principle.] 1. Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the
previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to
justify a solution method.
Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. [Linear inequalities; literal equations that are linear in the variables
being solved for; quadratics with real solutions] 3. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including
equations with coefficients represented by letters.
4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable. a. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic
equation in x into an equation of the form

( x p )2=q

that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from

this form. b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for

x 2=49 ), taking square roots, completing the square,

the quadratic formula, and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic
formula gives complex solutions and write them as

a bi

for real numbers a

and

b .

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

How is the meaning of each part of the algebraic equation allow us to solve the equation?
Student learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will be able to understand the meaning of an equation, label the
parts of an equation, and recognize why these parts matter to our reasoning for solving the equation.
What are the steps needed to solve an algebraic equation and how to we ensure correct solutions?
Student learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will be able to identify and apply the order of steps necessary for
solving an algebraic equation. Students will be able to assess if they have the correct solution to the algebraic equation.

What are the four methods for solving quadratic equations?

Student learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will know what a quadratic equation is and decide which method to
use on how to solve them such as completing the square, taking square roots, the quadratic formula, and factoring.
Unit Summary:
The students will learn the meaning of an algebraic equation, and recognize the different types of algebraic equations we will be
working with. They will then learn the various methods on how to solve each particular type of algebraic equation, and learn to
check their own work to see if their solution is correct for the algebraic equation. This lesson teaches skills used in higher
mathematics classes. We will begin working with linear equations, then apply these rules to inequalities as well. Lastly the
students will learn the various methods on how to solve a quadratic equation.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
The students will take a short survey to
see how much they know or remember
about equations, expressions, terms, and
variables.

Formative:
The students will create a set of
flashcards on quizlet in which they will
show, describe, and define all the pieces
of equations and inequalities. They will
also indicate the purpose of each piece
and symbol of the equation. They can
also include examples.

Summative:
The students will create a poster of their
choice of a linear equation, inequality, or
quadratic equation. The poster will
include information on one of these three
types of equations in general, and also
include an example of the type of
equation they have chosen.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
At the end of this
lesson students will
be able to understand
the meaning of an
equation, label the
parts of an equation,
and recognize why
these parts matter to
our reasoning for
solving the equation.

Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
Recall: The students
will create a set of
flashcards on quizlet
in which they will
show, describe, and
define all the pieces
of equations and
inequalities. They will
also indicate the
purpose of each piece
and symbol of the
equation. They can
also include
examples.

Lesson Activities:
Students will watch a prezi, and fill in the guided notes that go along with it.
Students will learn the definitions of equations. They will learn the steps in solving
equations. They will compare equations with inequalities. This will be an overall of
the definitions we will be using. They will learn the steps in solving an algebraic
equation and inequality. They will create notes and use these as a study tool, at the
end of the notes they will summarize what they have learned. They will use these
notes to complete their set of flashcards.

Student Learning

At the end of this
lesson students will
be able to identify
and apply the order of
steps necessary for
solving an algebraic
equation. Students
will be able to assess
if they have the
correct solution to the
algebraic equation.
Lesson 3

algebraic equation
identifying each step
applied in this
process. Demonstrate
these same methods
on inequalities. They
will demonstrate
these skills on their
worksheets and

Lesson Activities:
Students will look up various website on the steps involved in solving various types
of equations on the Webercise. Students will compare the step process for equations
with the step process of inequalities. They will learn how equations can build in their
level of difficulty, and see how this level of difficulty relates to how they will solve
the equation.
