Let'sstartherewhatisaheatexchanger?Seemslikeagood
placetostart,right?Well,aheatexchangerisadeviceinwhich
twofluidsflowalongoppositesidesofasolidboundarywall,
whichkeepsthefluidsseparatewhileatthesametimeletting
heattopassfromthehotfluidtothecold.Aheatexchangerisa
vitalcomponenttomaintainingthetemperature,andthusthe
performance,ofyourequipment.

Therearethreebasicapproachesforourcustomers2.5F,5Fand10F.Whatthismeansisthat
ifeverythingisworkingcorrectly,the"C"readingofthewatertemperaturegoingtothepumphasa
2.5F,5For10Fdifferencefromthecoolingwatersupplycominginat"A."
Asinglestagepumpwillhavea5For10Fapproachheatexchanger,whileatwostagevacuum
pumpwillhavea2.5For5Fapproach.Whicheveritis,eachapproachensuresthatthepump
isabletorunascoolaspossible.Thisisespeciallyimportantinhotweather.Compressors
generallyhave10Fapproachheatexchangers,becausethewatertemperatureisn'taffectedas
muchasitiswithvacuumpressure.Highwatertemperaturewillaffectthevaporpressureand
preventgoodvacuumperformance.
Whentesting,recordallofthetemperaturesonthechecksheet.Alwaysrecordthedate.Asweall
know,temperatureschangeswiththeseasonsafterall,youdon'twanttocompareJanuaryand
Augustreadingswithoutbeingawareofthetimeframe.Almostallheatexchangersrunhotterinthe
summerbecausethecoolingwatersupplyiswarmer.Thereareexceptions,suchaswhena
customeruseschilledwater.

Somekeydifferencesbetweena2.5Fanda10Fapproachistheheatexchangersizeand
coolingwaterflow,especiallyontheShellandTubeexchangers.Notethatona10Fapproach
exchanger,theBreadingis10FhigherandthusgivesusthehigherapproachatC.Therefore,
Cwouldbe10FhigherthanAinthisexample.
IfyouhavefullwaterflowfromAtoB,itwillbetakingtheheatoutwiththecoolingwaterandnot
havemuchdifference.Ifthereisalowcoolingwaterflow,Bwillhaveahighertemperaturethe
lowerthewaterflow,thehigherthetemperature.ThiswillraisethereadingatC,thesealwater
temperature.
Ifthereisn'tanydifferencebetweenA,BandC,butDishot,theproblemismostlikelyalack
ofheattransferduetocalciumorscalebuilduponthetubes.A.010.015buildupofcalciumisa
goodinsulatorforheattransfer,asarerustandscale.Becausethetubesareeasiertoclean,dirty
watershouldbegoingthroughthetubes,whilethecleanestwatershouldbegoingthroughthe
shell.
IfyouhaveahightemperaturechangefromCtoD,thestrainerororificemaybepluggingup.Be
suspiciousofthiswheneveryouseeatemperaturedifferencebetweenCandDthatis20For
more.
Temperature"E"shouldberecordedincasethesuctiontemperatureishotenoughtoaffectpump
performanceortheotherreadings.
