Guidelines:
Service Learning Project, Paper#2 (20% of final grade)
Deadline to sign up for a project (through community.uwm.edu): September 16
Service Learning Paper due: December 2, in D2L Dropbox
GER Assignment: Integrating one Service Learning Project for students to deepen their understanding of
leadership skills and business core principles as applied to community organizations and civic life through
participation, analysis, critical evaluation and self-reflection in the context of social responsibility.
During the semester, each student must participate in one volunteer Service Learning project through the
Center of Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research and write a 3-4-page description,
reflection and analysis paper based on the experience.
Each student may select from the variety of projects and dates listed on their web page:
http://www.community.uwm.edu. This web site also provides many resources. The projects range from
working at the Hunger Task Force Farm to helping the elderly winterize their homes to neighborhood
clean ups and more. The Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research provides
transportation and supplies on most projects. They are located in the Union in room WG28.
Please write a 3-4-page essay about your service learning project experience. Type your name, the date,
class section, and title in the upper right hand of your document. The essay should be double-spaced
using size 12 Times New Roman font. Incorporate answers to the following questions in your essay:
1. Which Service Learning Project did you select? When did you attend? Why did you select this
event?
2. Describe your Service Learning project. What was the chronology of events for the day?
3. What were the objectives of the project? This is a Service Learning project- who all did we aim to
serve? How did your objectives evolve and transform as the project developed? How and to what
degree were your objectives met?
4. What did you discover about the volunteer organization that you had not known before the
project?
5. Describe your thoughts and feelings about the Service Learning project you selected. How did
does it tie into the content of this course (such as its level of social responsible behavior and/or its
organizational structure)?
6. Describe your contribution to the event. Was this a positive experience? How did you
communicate during the event? How did this make you feel?
7. What strategies did you use to communicate effectively with the individuals that were associated
with the project (non UWM students)? How did your interactions with them differ from your
interactions with your fellow college students?
8. What was surprising to you about this project? What did you like best about it? What would you
do differently if you were to repeat it?
9. What would you add to your reflection that is not covered in these questions?

Write a concluding paragraph that gives closure to your thoughts.
