POWER CABLE BARE ALUMINUM

WIRE MANUFACTURE

This bare concentric-lay-stranded conductor is made

from round aluminum 1350-H19 (extra hard) wires and
round aluminum-alloy 6201-T81 core wires for use as
overhead electrical conductors. It presents a higher
mechanical resistance.

The aluminum compound is knitted from the rod, these

rods are given a thermal treatment and once knitted the
wires go through an artificial aging process. The thermal
and the artificial aging treatments are essential to obtain
optimal mechanical and electric properties.

The following tables show different combinations of

stranding regarding this type of conductor (ACAR).

CABLE MANUFACTURE

The cables are not selected as a separate rubric from an

overhead line, they are selected for economic reasons that
involve the line installation costs in conjunction with the
financial requirements related to its operation, like energy
loss, interest over capital, and depreciation.

The same machines that manufacture aluminum cables

are used. Pace specifications and direction change from
the layers apply to aluminum compound cables. For the
compounds, a conformation operation is required when
knitting the cables to secure maximum cable stability and
good handling characteristics.

Thermal treated aluminum composed cables are not a

new idea. On 1925 these cables were already in use in
Europe for overhead transmission and distribution
systems. Magnesium compounds have been successfully
used for a long time in plates and as thread or wire reenforcement for isolated cables; also as re-enforcement
for submarine cables and 6201-armed cables. It can be
said that aluminum compound has proven for years its
characteristics in electrical applications.

CONDUCTOR DESIGN
To calculate all the parameters of the cables, the following
information should be available:
1. The design of the messenger cable that carries the
weight of the isolated cables, this design covers:
a) The elasticity module.
b) The lineal dilatation coefficient.
c) The total weight per meter (kg/m).
d) Total diameter.
e) The speed of the wind on that zone.
f) Average daily temperature.
g) Type of compound.
h) Caliber of the messenger cables.
