ACC Football Assignment

The national article I chose was from USA Today; USA Today Sports titled: NCAA to Move
Championships from North Carolina due to HB2 Law by Scott Gleeson, September 12, 2016.
The article was informative to the effect of making known nationally what occurred with the
NCAA during the passing of the bill HB2. NCAA made a decision to move the tournament
games because they were revamping how their policies and processes affected everyone as a
whole. The NCAA stated inclusive atmosphere for all college athletes, coaches, administrators
and fans. NCAA described HB2 as state laws that limit civil rights protections". With that
being their primary goal this year it was clear the HB2 bill did not appeal to their core hopes of
positively affecting everyone, resulting in their decision to relocate the sporting events. The
national publication spoke to a broad audience, providing basic information of the locations most
effected. However, it didnt focus on fan based ideals or indebt detail of how the NCAA
removing the games would affect the former places held in the past. The article spoke to an
audience focused on the political standpoint, i.e. the governors and political views.
The local North Carolina publication I chose was from the Daily Tar Hill, titled: ACCs
Championship Relocations Affect North Carolina Communities by C. Jackson Cowart,
September 15, 2016. This local publication is with University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
The focus was primarily on how the removal of the tournaments would affect the communities
like Charlotte and Greensboro. The author discussed how the communities would lose millions
of dollars, and the disappointment of the fan base. Moreover, this article was written with a little
more simplicity than the national article. The HB2 was mentioned for awareness, but the article
did not focus on political reviews. The author was clear to voice the views of governmental
powers however showed the economic concerns about the ACC choosing to withdraw the games.
Ie , Gov. Pat McCrory who signed HB2 into law on March 23 said the battle over the law
should be resolved in the courts, not through economic protests. The statement above showed a
natives personal connection to the changes being made and not just a political stand point.
Although economics involve political matters, they also affect communities, towns and local
residents.
Looking at the publication I can see two different writing styles. The national publication was
clear to appeal to those who were interested in the political side of HB2s effect on the
NCAA/ACC tournaments. Its very clear they were appealing to a broader audience and
therefore focused on broader issues of the tournaments being withdrawn from North Carolina.

The local publication was more personal to those fans and areas in North Carolina directly
affected by the removal of the tournaments. They showed how economically the tournaments
were beneficial to the communities in which the events were held. They showed an emotional
attachment and being local to the state there was a personal connection on the writers part which
was prevalent in appealing to the audiences of local North Carolinians. I feel my writing style
will be slightly altered because being aware of the different styles and audiences affected I will
have to take into consideration the verbiage and way I am organizing my writing piece. By
examining the two writing styles and the audiences they were appealing to make me aware of the
kind of impact I would like to make with the audience reading my writing work.
