1) What are your personal and academic goals, and how will Y-VISP help you attain these

goals?

I have two major personal goals. Firstly, I would like to better appreciate and understand the workings
of our diverse and globally connected world, and thus develop a more global outlook. At NUS, I am
exposed to mainly the Asian perspective, because a majority of the lecturers and students are from
this region. Given that Yale has a strong international student population of 17 per cent and from over
100 countries, the Y-VISP will allow me to interact with people with varying backgrounds, cultures and
perspectives. My hope is to enhance my knowledge-base through the interaction with these people. I
believe that Yales unique teaching style will be ideal for this. The emphasis placed on classroom
discussions and student participation would give me exposure to novel ideas, which would aid in my
personal development. Having the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of people, I believe that
I would gain valuable insights from their varying perspectives.
My second goal is something that I hope to achieve in the later part of my life. I aspire to take the
knowledge and experience gained from my field of work and study to do good for those in need. I wish
to set up an organisation that empowers needy youths. What I envisage this organisation to do is to
be an advisory body in helping less privileged students in Southeast Asia attain scholarships and
bursaries from multinational companies. Should the work of the organisation be successful, I will
extend it to other parts of the world. Through the Y-VISP, I believe I will have a head start in fulfilling
this dream. I will be able to establish contacts through networking with the people there. Quoting from
Yales website, I will have incredible access to people who really are changing the world. Such
passionate individuals who aspire to make a difference in their societies are ideal connections for me
to tap on when pursuing this goal.
My academic goal is to complete my undergraduate studies in Applied Mathematics with a second
major in Management. I also plan to pursue a concurrent Master of Science (Management) at NUS.
With these qualifications, I wish to embark on a career in the financial sector as an analyst. The
specific area of financial analysis is something that I will explore during my studies at NUS. I have
always had a passion for mathematics, which has led me to specialise in this field. The masters
degree will complement my first degree as it will give me the core knowledge of business elements
such as marketing, finance and strategic management. In the Y-VISP, I plan to undertake
mathematics and non-core modules. I look forward to being taught by world-renowned professors who
may be able to provide me with different insights, hence widening my mathematics knowledge. Also,
NUS tends to have large class sizes, unlike Yale where most classes enrol fewer than 20 students.
Therefore I will be exposed to a different, more personalised teaching method that I believe would
broaden my scope of learning, as well as enhance my personal development.
