A) Measures of Central Tendency
1. The following data (money spent at the Student Center) were created so I could illustrate

characteristics of central tendency statistics. The data that follow are based on a study of actual
expenditures for food by freshmen students at Central Michigan University. (See
http://www.westga.edu/~bquest/2008/local08.pdf). The scores are for a two week period and
are from students who reported positive expenditures. Find:
a) The mean
b) Median
c) Mode
d) Standard Deviation
e) Coefficient of Variation

2. The temperatures listed are averages for March, June, September, and December. Calculate the
mean and standard deviation for each city. Summarize your results in a sentence.

3. A company of electronic transmitters, recording as follows the number of receipts of service
provided by each of its 20 stores:

335 449 727 848 649 229 347 309 575 757
Calculate the mean and standard deviation for this number of services provided.

4. Given the following two distributions A and B, determine in each case:

a) the range
b) the frequency table with 8 kinds of width 7 for A distribution width and 10 classes 7 for
distribution B.

B) Descriptive Statistics. Probability

1. A jar contains 10 marbles, 7 black and 3 white. Two marbles are drawn
without replacement, which means that the first one is not put back before the
second one is drawn.
a. What is the probability that both marbles are black?
b. What is the probability that exactly one marble is black?
c. What is the probability that at least one marble is black?
2. In a sample of 902 individuals under 40 who were or had previously been
married, each person was classified according to gender and age at first
marriage. The results are summarized in the following two-way classification
table, where the meaning of the labels is:

M: male
F: female
E: a teenager when first married
W: in ones twenties when first married
H: in ones thirties when first married

a. Find the probability that the individual selected was a teenager at first
marriage.
b. Find the probability that the individual selected was a teenager at first
marriage, given that the person is male.
c. Determine whether or not the events F: female and E: was a teenager at
first marriage are independent.
