EMACO CP

30
High-performance anode for concrete
cathodic protection
Description
EMACO CP 30 is a unique anode coating that has been
developed specifically for reinforced concrete applications.
The material is water-based and contains highly-conductive
coated fibres, tri-dimensionally distributed throughout a
100% acrylic resin. The electro catalytic coating on the
fibres has a very low consumption rate and results in
superior current distribution and mechanical properties, and
enhanced anode life.

Substrate quality:
In order to cathodically protect steel-reinforced concrete,
electrical continuity of the steel is required. For existing
structures a condition survey should be undertaken to
establish the suitability of the structure for CP.
Reference should be made to the draft CEN standard
TC262/SC2/WG2.

Uses
EMACO CP 30 is a durable anode for impressed current
cathodic protection (CP) of steel-reinforced structures.
Suitable applications include the control of active
corrosion in highway structures, car parks and buildings,
also the prevention of corrosion in structures at risk.

Packaging
EMACO CP 30 is supplied pre-packed in 20 litre pails

Application

Substrate preparation:
Preparation of the concrete substrate is vital to achieve
optimum performance and long service life from the
cathodic protection installation. Remove all surface
coatings, defective renders, foreign matter, formwork
treatments, laitance, algae and other contaminants that may
adversely affect the bond. Use abrasive blasting or highpressure water jetting. Do not use vibrating or high-impact
methods; such methods increase the risk of inducing micro
cracks that may affect the adhesion and the long-term
durability of the anode system.
Spalled or delaminated areas and cracks should be
repaired with approved concrete repair products. Hairline

cracks may be left untreated. Under no circumstances

should any cracks be injected with materials which will
insulate areas from the CP system. Areas of low cover and
exposed steel must be treated or the cover built up to that
required.
Primary anode (b)
A primary anode is an essential requirement for a EMACO
CP 30 system. The required number and configuration for
correct current distribution will be project specific and is,
therefore, a CP design decision. As a guide for a plane
surface, primary anodes should be placed at 1.5m centres
(maximum) with a 0.5m clearance from the edges of the
anode zones
The primary anode may be embedded in the EMACO CP
30 using an appropriate open gauze tape, which is laid over
the primary anode and held in position with EMACO CP 30.
Alternatively, the primary anode may be fixed directly to the
prepared substrate by an appropriate method, such as a
series of small individual dots of a fast setting adhesive,
without totally encapsulating the primary anode.
The configuration should allow the connection to the rectifier
to be made outside the anodic zone and in duplicate as a
minimum.
Suitable primary anode materials include platinum/niobiumclad copper wire, such as Anomet 40 (0.8mm diameter) by
Anomet Products.

Mixing:
EMACO CP 30 is supplied as a ready-to-use product and
must not be diluted or altered in any way. Stir the material
with a paddle mixer before application to ensure uniform
dispersion of the solid content throughout the mixture.
For optimum results mixing should be carried out between
20 and 30C.
Application:
Only apply EMACO CP 30 when the ambient and substrate
temperature are at least 10C, and will not fall below 5C
within 24 hours. To avoid condensation which influences the
adhesion negatively, surface temperature during application
should be at least 3C higher then the dewpoint.
The prepared substrate must be air-dry when the first coat
is applied. Apply EMACO CP 30 when no rainfall is
expected or take the necessary protective measures using,
for example, plastic sheets.
EMACO CP 30 may be applied using a brush, roller or
suitable spray application technique(c). Roller and spray
applications are preferred as they ensure optimum tridimensional distribution of the fibres throughout the anode
coating.
Apply a first coat of EMACO CP 30 at a rate of at least
525g/m of concrete surface area. Whilst the first coat is still
wet, embed the primary anode using the open gauze tape.
Alternatively, if the primary anode has been fixed directly to
the concrete, apply a protective non-woven fabric, e.g.
Lutradur LD7250 by Freudenberg, to the primary anode
using a little extra EMACO CP 30.

Do not apply the second coat until the first coat is

completely dry. In any case, it should not be applied within
24 hours to allow the first coat to cure adequately.
The second coat of EMACO CP 30 should be applied at a
rate of at least 525g/m of concrete surface area.
EMACO CP 30 is not intended for applications involving
continuous immersion in water or in tidal situations.

Curing
Drying times primarily depend upon prevailing conditions
such as wind, humidity and temperature, as EMACO CP 30
is a water-based coating. The recommended drying time is
a minimum of 24 hours.
EMACO CP 30 can be overcoated with approved MBT
coating products, such as MASTERSEAL F1131, in order to
enhance the performance in aggressive environments or for
aesthetic purposes. Preferentially this is done 7 days after
the application of EMACO CP 30.
Clean up and spillages:
Clean equipment and spillages immediately with water.
Dried material can be removed by scraping and xylene.
Cleaning of equipment and tools should be carried out as
soon as practicable well away from the application area.
Operation maintenance of the CP installation:
To achieve cathodic protection of the reinforcement and
optimise the service life of the CP system, especially the
anode, it is essential that suitable design, commissioning,
monitoring, control and maintenance procedures are
followed.
Reference should be made to the draft CEN standard
TC262/SC2/WG2.

Coverage
Coverage is dependent upon various factors, including
the method of working and substrate condition.
The recommended dry-film thickness is 500m, which is
normally achieved in two layers and results in a
theoretical coverage of 1.05kg/m or 1 l/m for a two-coat
application.

Storage
EMACO CP 30 should be stored under cover, clear of the
ground and stacked not more than 2 pails high. Protect
the materials from all sources of moisture and frost.
Rotate stock in order not to exceed the shelf life of 12
months.

Health and safety

EMACO CP 30 is essentially non-hazardous, but is
recommended that gloves and eye protection should be
worn.
Accidental splashes of the material to the skin or eyes
should be immediately washed off with clean water. In the
event of prolonged irritation seek medical advice. In the
case of ingestion give water or milk to drink and treat
symptomatically. Medical advice should be sought.
