whetheritbeamagicianknowingwhatcardyouchoseorgettinga
quarterfrombehindyouear.Magicisatoolthatisusedtochange
therapyupandmakeitmoreenjoyable.TheactivityTalkingMagic
Calculatorisusedtoimprovetheparticipantssocialskills,memory
andfocus.Thecalculatorisusedtocommunicatebyusingnumbers
thatmakeupwords.Forexample,whenyouputthenumber4614and
turnthecalculatorupsidedownitspellsHIGH.1)TheCTRSwillask
allparticipantstositinacircle2)TheCTRSwillexplaintheactivity
andwilldemonstrate.3)TheCTRSwillassigneachparticipanta
letterandacorrespondingletter.4)TheCTRSwillthenbegintoask
thegrouptospelloutdifferentwordsgiventheletterandnumbersthat
weregiventothegroup.5)Theparticipantsthathavethelettersthat
pertaintothewordaskedmustraisetheirhandandplacethenumber
inthecalculatortomakeuptheword.6)Theparticipantthathasthe
lastnumberandletterofthewordwillstandupandshowtherestof
thegroupthewordandsayitoutloud.7)Thiswillgoonuntil
everyonehashadachancetogetupandreciteaword.

LeadershipConsiderations:TheCTRSwillbeleadingtheactivity
andwillberesponsibleforsettingupthespaceandchoosingthe
wordsthattheparticipantswillbeusing.Heorsheneedstomakesure
theypreparealistofwordsandthateachparticipantgetsadifferent
letterthatwillmakeuptheword.TheCTRSwillgetsomevolunteers
tocomeandhelpwithorganizingandworkingwiththecalculators.

Participants who have a diagnosis of Autism and are nonverbal: Autismisadisorderthatischaracterizedbypoorsocial

interactionskills,behaviorsandtheircanbeverbalornonverbal
Autism.Whentheindividualisnonverbaltheyareunabletoproduce
speechorspeakcorrectly,theymayusenoises,screamingandone
wordtocommunicateifpossible.Theymayalsohaveproblemswith
hisorhervoice.Anactivitylikethiswouldbebeneficialforsomeone
whohadbeendiagnosedwithAutismandisnonverbalbecausethey
areusingadevicetocommunicateinsteadofspeechitself.An
adaptationforthepartwheretheyparticipantmuststandupandrecite
thewordwouldbetoeitherhavethemusetheircommunication
assistivedeviceorhavethemusesignlanguageifthatisalanguage
theyarefamiliarwith,alsotheycanhandittotheCTRSandhave
themrecitetheword.Iftheindividualisabletosayonewordthenthe
CTRSaskthefamilyandusethatwordasthatpersonsword,which
willboosttheirconfidenceandeagernesstoparticipateinactivities.

PeoplewithObsessiveCompulsivedisorder:OCDorObsessive
Compulsivedisorderisamentaldisorderthataffectstheindividuals
dailylife,theyhavespecificobsessionsandcompulsions.These
specificobsessionsandcompulsionimpedewiththeindividuals
socialinteraction,healthandroutine.ThetreatmentforOCDis
normallyacombinationofpsychiatricmedicationsand
psychotherapy.Thisactivitywouldbebeneficialforthosethathave

beendiagnosedwithOCDbecausetheyareinagroupsettingandthey
mustparticipateinsocialinteractionandalsotheyarenotincontrolof
theactivitysoitwillbeachallengefortheirobsessionand
compulsions.Anadaptationwouldbetohaveafamilymemberora
closefriendthatwillhelpthemfeelmorecomfortableinthesetting.
Also,havingaspecificlistofwordshavingtodowiththeirobsession
andcompulsionssothatitischallengingatherapeutic.Another
adaptationwouldbetohaveaspecificgroupthathaveallbeen
diagnosedwithOCD.
