POCKETS
1 Cut two 5 x 6 rectangles from patterned fabric.
2 Place the rectangles right sides together and sew around the edges
with seam, leaving a 2 opening on one shorter side.
3 Trim the corners, turn right side out and press.
4 Place the fabric on the left side of the fusible-reinforced page
(centered toward the bottom) and edge stitch it in place on three
sides to form a pocket, catching the opening as you go.
5 Cut a 6 x 4 rectangle from felt. Trim off two corners, creating a
point (see picture).
6 Stitch the flap along the top, about above the pocket.
7 To create a flap from fabric, follow the same sew-then-turn
technique you used to create the pocket, only alter the shape.
Edge stitch it completely, then sew it in place above the pocket.
SHAPES PAGE
1 Draw four simple shapes on a piece of paper and cut them out for
your templates.
2 Cut three of each design from different colors of felt (three red
circles, three blue triangles, etc.).
3 Sew pairs of shapes together so you have four pairs and four singles
of each shape.
4 Following the snap manufacturers directions, set a snap through
each of the sewn-together pairs.
5 Arrange the single shapes on the page and sew them in place.
6 Place the pairs on top and mark the spot beneath where the snap
should go. Set the remaining snap pieces on the page to finish.
LACE-UP SHOE PAGE
1 Using the templates on page 93, cut
the shoe top, sole, back tab, and toe
embellishment from brown leather. Cut
the two toe pieces from white leather.
2 Sew a line of contrasting stitching
down either side of the brown shoe top,
giving it definition where the grommets
will go.
3 Pin the white half-circle to the sole and
stitch across the straight side to attach.
4 Layer and pin the rest of the pieces
together on your page as pictured on
page 91.
5 Sew the layers to the shoe with a
narrow seam. Trim excess leather.
6 Set six grommets (three on each
side of the shoe top) according to
manufacturers directions.
7 Thread a shoelace through to finish.
HAIR PAGE
1 Using the templates on page 93, cut the face and neck
from cream felt and the dress/sleeves from purple felt.
2 Trace the eyes, nose, and mouth on the face. Backstitch
them using pink, cream, and black embroidery floss.
3 Arrange face, neck, and dress pieces on the page.
4 Sew the neck, then the face to the page using
coordinating thread.
5 Sew the dress and sleeves to the page using coordinating
thread. Outline the sleeves with a tight zigzag stitch.
6 Cut 14 lengths of yarn for the hair (youll need between
75-100, depending on how thick you want the hair).
7 With the yarn strands aligned, place them so the center is
at the top of the head.
8 Hand stitch a straight line down the middle of the yarn
to hold it in place at the top. The hair can now be done in
braids, twists, buns, etc.
9 Create a hair clip by cutting a flower from brightly
colored felt. Add a button or other embellishment to the
center. Glue a clip to the back, or leave it as is the felt will
stay more or less in place on the hair.
CUPCAKE PAGE
1 Using the template on page 92, cut two of each shape (four for
the frosting) from felt.
2 Sew French knots to one of the strawberry pieces using pink
embroidery floss.
3 Sew Velcro to the back of one of the frosting, cupcake base,
and strawberry pieces. Place the matching piece on top and sew
the pairs together with 1/8 seam.
4 Sew the plate pieces to each other by zigzag stitching a smaller
oval in the center. Edge stitch the plate to the bottom of the
page.
5 Arrange the cupcake pieces as a guide, and sew Velcro to the
page where you want the pieces to go.
PEA POD PAGE
1 Cut a 9 x 6 block of green patterned fabric. Trim it in
half, lengthwise, so you have two 9 x 3 pieces.
2 Fold and press the ends under by and sew to
either side of a zipper using a zipper foot on your
machine.
3 Cut two 3 squares of the same fabric and fold
and press one edge of each square under . Sew
them in place at the top and bottom of the zipper,
securing the zipper ends.
4 Using the peapod template on page 92, trace the
peapod on the back of your piece.
5 Trim around the shape, leaving about border. Fold
and press it under to the wrong side of the fabric.
6 Pin the pressed peapod in place and sew around the
edges, about 1/8 in.
7 Again using the template on page 92, trace the vines
and leaves around the peapod. Use a backstitch or
outline stitch to embroider the decorative lines.
8 To make peas to put inside the pod, cut out several
pairs of circles from green felt using the circle
template on page 92. Sew or blanket stitch around
the edges, adding just a little bit of stuffing if desired.
MITTEN PAGE
1 Using the templates on page 92, cut a mitten
from blue felt and a heart from red felt.
2 Cut a strip of red ric rac the width of the
bottom of the mitten.
3 Sew the ric rac to the mitten with a straight
stitch; trim any overhang.
4 Sew the heart to the mitten as shown, using
red thread and sewing about 1/8 in from the
edge.
5 Pin the mitten in place on your page. Leave
the bottom open, scooting the edges in slightly
before you sew to make enough room for a
hand to fit inside.
6 Stitch the mitten to the page using blue
thread, sewing about 1/8 in from the edge.
Reinforce the ends by backstitching.
TIP
For peas with personality,
you can create little
faces on them using
embroidery floss, googly
eyes, scrap felt, etc.
