2. The Beach Profiles shown here are distorted, the ver
tical scale being 10 times the horizontal scale which has

been kept the same as that of the accompanying map.

Owing to the distortion, the slopes appear much steeper

than they actually are, but more accurate vertical measure

ments for the application of tidal data are thus made

possible.

3. The profiles have been developed from the following

sources.

Chart depths from French Hydrographic Chart, 1938.

Beach elevations from Aerial Photographs taken at

varying stages of tide.

10
Land elevations from available map sources, and obli
que Aerial Photographs, (see below)

4. The map shown on this sheet has been developed

entirely from Aerial Photographs, and spot heights taken

from French Charts.

Water depths and Beach elevations (in feet) are re

ferred to the Chart Datum Plane, which corresponds ap
proximately to the lowest occuring low water.

Heights on land are referred to Map zero, approx

imately Mean Sea Level, shown in the vertical profile scale.

5. The landing craft silhouette transparent accompanying

the profile sheet is used in the following way:

The hour contemplated for the beaching of the craft

is marked on the tide curve (for the day) and the height
VERTICAL BEACH PROFILE FF
of the water drawn to the profile. To this water-level, the

waterline of the landing craft is adjusted, and the silhouette

slid until touching the profile. In this manner the beaching

, of craft for an entire operation can be studied.
