As with any religion or system of law, when it comes to the Islamic law of war there is a gap
between the ideal and its application in the world. It is possible to sift through the long history of
war and peace in Islamic civilization and find examples where political powers and even
religious scholars have acted and espoused views which are anti-thetical to the spirit and letter of
the teachings of Islam outlined above regarding war and peace. Indeed, it has happened that
Muslims have created situations amounting to forced conversion, or killed innocents in battle, or
treated the members of other religions with contempt and cruelty. Yet there is an important
difference between the flouting of high ideal and the institution of a vicious teaching. If abuses
have occurred in the application of the Islamic laws of war, these exist in spite of those
teachings, not because of them. Moreover, a fair reading of Islamic history will show that in the
majority of cases the Islamic law of warwith its principles of justice, sparing of innocents, and
idealization of peacewere largely held to, and very often the conduct of Muslims in war
exhibited the highest standards of chivalry and nobility. Moving forward from the time of the
Prophet and Companions to the Crusades, we observe the figure of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi,
known to the West as Saladin, a 64 figure of almost proverbial gallantry in battle and kindness in
victory. The reconquest of Jerusalem by Saladin was as memorable for its mercy as was the
initial Christian conquest for its brutality, mirroring the mercy the Prophet showed to his enemies
when he entered victorious into Mecca near the end of his life.

Introduction:
The word jihad actually means to put effort to perform in action, while in terminology Jihad
refers to the religious duty of Muslims to maintain and spread the religion. It means that any

action taken for the sake of Islam is jihad. These includes spreading of Islamic rules, safety of
these rules and even the protection of Islamic state. Majorly jihad can be catagorised is follow:

Jihad bin nafs

Jihad bil mal
Jihad bil ilam
Jihad bil qital

Majorly we will be concern here with Jihad bil qital which means that for the safety of Islamic
rules and Islamic state, Muslims can fight with the enemies. As Allah says in Quran :

And prepare against them whatever you are you are able of power and of steed of war
by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them who you
do not know (but) Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid
to you, and will not be wronged. And if they inline to peace, then incline to it (also) and rely
upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is hearing, the knowing.
The above stated verses first direct Muslims to fight against the enemies of God, with all stealth they could
gather in order to succeed, and also emphasize on spending their properties and money for this cause. That
fulfills the primary jist of Islam which is putting forward ones everything for Almighty Allah.
Now a days the concept of Jihad has been misunderstood by non-Muslims. Whenever the word jihad is used
they considered it to be a war against them, which is not the case in Islam as according to our holy prophets
saying which means that:

A word of truth spoken in front of an oppressive ruler is better jihad.

The actual purpose of jihad in Islam is to protect Islamic rules and to establish peace and
prosperity in the society.

Main Body:
After getting a brief introduction of Jihad and its types now we come to our original business.
Before going to in detail of Jihad, I would like to clear one thing that is largely understand with

wrong perception. As in introduction it was mentioned that in Jihad is name of struggle in the
path of Allah Almighty and His Prophet P.B.U.P. Mostly people consider War as Jihad but
actually its subtype of jihad as other like jihad-bil-maal, jihad-bin-nafs etc. Such type of Jihad
has proper instruction and condition when fight is considered compulsory, those terms and
condition will be address later.

Importance of human life:

Basically Islam is a civilized religion. Human life has got a great importance in Islam. Islam is a
religion of peace. It provides the full security to everyone. It is not only Islam but every religion
of the world must gave this lessons to his followers to be secure his existence, if a religion taught
his follower lesson of fight corruption without any reasons than this world will be filled with
blood. In Quran Almighty Allah says
If a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (forever): and
the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for
him. (Al-nisaa, 4/9).
This is the lesson that the Islam ( Global religion ) gave to his followers. But it is not all about at
any conditions, there are some situation in which Islam teach us about the protection of our
religion, our life, our honour and wealth.

Jihad Obligation:
Although Islamic teaching based on justice and tolerance, and thought the lesson of peace and
ordered his followers that dont harm any person but even animals also. But there are some
situation when all these things become useless, at last you should take a hard step to defend
yourself. For example you are living in his country with peace and prosperity and someone from
outside your country that is non-Muslims attacked on you then you cant welcome him with
flowers, definitely you defend yourself at any cost, you could do whatever you are able to handle
with him. So in such a cases Islam thought His followers certain rule and regulation so that they
can defend themselves and can do the preaching of Islam. In such condition war is allowed to
Muslims because Allah gave this opportunity.
To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight) for they have been
oppressed, and verily Allah is well able to assist them. (Al-Haj, verse 39).
In this verse basic two things are discussed, first Allah allows the Muslim to protect themselves
and Islam, but you it is actually Islam that Muslim should protect and then holy Quran also give
a good news of victory .
One thing that we must understand is the cause of this war is not to just protect his life but
actually it is war for Allah, and it might be possible tha you loss you life in this war but Allah
blessed him on the day of Judgment. Allah clearly states in His Holy Book about the cause of
this war, in surah Baqarah verse no 190 Allah says:
And fight in the cause of Allah (against) those who fight you,

So we can say that the reason behind this Holy war is just to please Allah and his prophet
P.B.U.H. If someone fight with non-Muslim just because of for state or to protect his wealth or
property then there is no reward for that from Allah on the Day of Judgment.

Rules of War
Now I would like to explain the terms and condition in which holy War is allowed to followers
of Islam. In Quran Allah almighty clearly announced that:

Fighting is enjoined on you, though it be hateful to you. Yet it may happen that you dislike
a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that you love a thing which is evil for you;
Allah knows, and you know not. (2:216)
In this verse Allah set a criteria, that is it may happen that you dislike one thing but it will be
better for you and Allah puts goodness in that alternatively it is also possible that Allah gave a
certain order for certain thing and you think it is harmful for you, here Allah Almighty said
accept those things I say because I know each and every thing and you dont even about yourself.
Generally in the other religion it is consider that war is only allowed when someone to protect
his life, wealth, and other humans rights but here in Islam the purpose and soul is totally
different. Islam wants all jobs for Allah and Prophet P.B.U.H.

Problems facing now a days:

Now a days Muslim Ummah facing a lot of misconception and difficulties regarding
understanding the concept of Jihad or Holy war. The main sources or things that are involved in
this misconception, are describe here shortly.

Lack of Knowledge:
From the list of problems that are Muslims facing, lack of knowledge is most important one. In
ummat-e-Muslima know a days it is consider a major disease because we loss many lives due to
this. Different thought of schools are found in Muslim ummah and everyone has built his own
mosque. Many people are uneducated or even see the translation of the Holy Quran throughout
his life are responsible or you can say imam of many masques. Due to this people are directed in
wrong direction and fresh mind will be affected greatly because originally he consider his given
direction Islam which is actually not like that.

Different thought of mind:

In Muslims as I mentioned earlier that different schools of thoughts are founds. Due to this reasons there
are great distances b/w followers of Islam are founds. And you know Islam is religion of unity where
every man is right arm another but unfortunately Muslims ummah is suffering with disease so greatly that
they are not even agree to offer prayers at same mosque under same Imam.

Government Irresponsibility:
Its our badness or unfortunate that up till now we dont success to elect a better choice of
government for ourselves. Although there are many factors involve, but our government is
greatly irresponsible regarding this issue because everyone who wants to use name of Islam for
his our benefits uses and make the concept of Islam and jihad debatable.

Role of foreign agencies:

No doubt, in Pakistan as well as across the other Muslim countries different foreign agencies
create such type of groups that create or use name of Islam and Jihad and do unlawful things that
are not admirable across the world or even Islam. Even Islam does not allow a single group or a
person to do war against non-Muslims because if Islam gave this chance to people that
everybody make his own decision and it is possible that the earth become full of morale or
murder corruption.

Law and order:

From the first day, we can see that the law and order situation is quite hopeless. Laws are only
for those who are poor and wealthy persons are independent on it. Due to this reasons our law
hand ups before wealthy peoples. Many cases are founds in which non-Muslims doing such a

things in which thay uses the name of Islam, committing crimes but remain save from
punishment. Unless we take hardsteps against these criminal we cant get rid off this problems.
And name of Islam become infamous.

Recommendations:
Islamic Education:
The missconcept about jihad in Pakistan is due to the unawareness of Islamic teachings regarding
jihad. A very low ratio of our new generation is desirable to receive Islamic education. So due to
this, not only for jihad, but also in others religious aspects we have misunderstandings and
misconceptions. Therefore Islamic education must be a compulsory subject in every level of our
education which will cover all the perspectives of Islamic education from different aspects.

Unity in Muslims:
For the subsistence of Muslim Ummah, it is necessary that all the muslims live as a single united
nation. Due to the creation of groups in muslims, even in our single country, there are differences
between us .Almost every group is considering every other group wrong.so as the ideologies are
different, there are misconceptions regarding even the basic Islamic thoughts. So our government
must take serious steps to vanish these differences.

Strict rules and law:

Our judiciary system is irrelevant and corrupt. The rules and laws of punishment are not
according to Islamic thoughts. Therefore a man can do whatever he wants. A man even with no
understanding of Islamic thoughts can call for jihad. However according to Islam call for jihad
can only be given by the leader of the state. So such people are actually foreign agents which try
to create differences between us. Strict laws should be applied upon them and they must be given
penalties.

Role of our intelligence agencies:

Our intelligence agencies must keep an eye upon our enemy countries.

Our enemies intelligence agencies are working hard to create differences within our country.
They are spending their efforts to make groups within and divide Islamic thoughts into different
sections. They try their best to brain wash and persuade one group members in our country to do
jihad against our army or against other groups.
Our intelligence agencies have to perform a high level operation against foreign agencies to
destroy their existence and to vanish the differences between different groups within the country

Affiliation of religious institutes:

The government must take solid considerations into account to ensure the affiliation of all our
religious institutes with wifaq-ul-madaris. The madaaris which are not affiliated yet should be
given serious notifications regarding the affiliation. Moreover there must be branches of wifa-ulmadaris in almost every province of the country. They must visit the institutes which are
affiliated with them in order to check the level of the Islamic teaching in them. So that there is no
miss conception regarding any Islamic lessons including jihad etc.

Qualification of Teachers in madaaris:

Teachers in our madaaris should be well qualified. At least every instructor of dars-e-nizami must
have the sanad of an aalim. A person should not be allowed to give any fitwa if he has not the
sanad of a mufti. All the instructors must be ensured of that they are delivering the true concepts
of Islamic thoughts regarding jihad and other aspects.

World wide peace:

Nowadays there are conflicts all over the world especially within the Muslim states. NonMuslims are invading Muslim countries like Syria, Iraq, Palestine etc and the world is kept calm
on the oppressiveness. So as a Muslim we cannot bear such cruelties upon our brothers. Therefor
some Muslims just lost on these crimes became indignant and join some misleading groups for
doing jihad against these oppressions. These groups are actually founded by the non-Muslim
countries. They brain wash the joining members and then use them against their own country.

Conclusion:
Nowadays there is a misconception of Jihad. In Islam jihad has taken different meaning
from that we have in mind today. One Muslim is attacking another Muslim brother on the
name of Jihad and cruelties and opressions upon poors and powerless people is given
the name of Jihad. But Human life has got a great importance in Islam. Islam is a

religion of peace. It provides the full security to the everyone. A single man can today
call for Jihad by himself without any serious action taken against him. Different sections
within our country are misleading our young generation.
The main point here is that, the concept of Jihad is alive today also, and it will remain
alive till the day of judgement, As the Holly Prophet (SA) has said. Connotation is Jihad
will continue till the day of judgement. But the thing is that we have misunderstanding
about this true concept of Jihad. The main theme of jihad is the safety of our religion
and it is a struggle in the path of ALLAH ALMIGHTY.
The main reasons behind this misconception include the ignorance of our government
and the presence of different groups with different ideologies regarding basic Islamic
thoughts. Now the government has to take the recommendations given into account in
order to protect our country from these disasters and cruelties and to vanish the
misconceptions regarding jihad.
