Final Paper: Applied Dynamics

Understanding group dynamics is the process in which one elaborates the concepts need
for a functioning group. Effective groups are created with operational communication, positive
decision-making and problem solving skills. A group must be able to overcome conflict as a
team. A group with a positive dynamic is an effective team. Team members trust one another, as
they are working towards the same common.
Open communication is essential to positive team dynamics. A team who is able to
communicate openly is capable of working effectively. Communication is more than just
exchanging information. It is the understanding of the content and relations behind the
information. It is not only how one conveys the information so that it is received and understood,
it also requires one to listen to gain the full meaning of what is being communicated. Listening
is a four-step process that begins with perceiving a message, then interpreting it, deciding what it
means, and finally responding to it. (Adams 55)
According to The 6 Group Dynamics of high-preforming Teams article, high preforming
teams share particular identified group dynamics. Teams talk and listen together, without a single
person dominating the conversation. Effective interactions are made on a personal level, such as

face to face; creating a personal interaction amongst the team. Direct communication is keys for
a team. Conversations regarding a group is best when discussed openly amongst the team.
Relevant outside information is utilized by the team. Communication is much more important
than individual contributions and talents. When a team follows a set of goals and guidelines
performance within a team is much more desirable and manageable.
An effective groups is a group who exemplifies particular qualities in order to function as
a successful group. In class we discussed the Beatles, based on the article provided, Be the
Beatles, not a Flock of Seagulls. This particular article expresses the dynamics of a group with
such detail as it discusses the eight key attributes. 1. Driven to win, just like the Beatles a group
is to be driven to win. For example when a team of marketing executives launch their product
they must first adapt to the needs of the consumers in order to achieve the goal. 2.
Complimentary Talents, every group will house a number of personalities. Diversity amongst a
group allows for everyone in the group to learn and understand each other. Working in a
problem as a group requires members to learn new information, integrate, this information into
commonly shared information, and then coordinate the informational resources of the group and
its members. (Adams 124) 3. Competitive Rivalry, positive rivalry can bring a team to compete
for a common goal without damaging the relationship of a team. This particular attribute, I
believe is best when properly managed as it can easily become dysfunctional if the competitive
rivalry is not treated in a positive manner. 4. Mutual Respect, when a team is faced with conflict
there are a number of management styles in which the team is faced with in order to defuse or
eliminate the conflict. Competing, accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, and compromising
are all styles in which a team manages conflict as we discussed in class (Thomas-class handout).
When faced with conflict the issues are to be identified, as people have different views on what

the issues are. Understanding everyones interests and listening to others differences is key when
resolving a conflict amongst a group. 5. Shared Worldview, is the foundation of creating a
successful plan amongst the team. Each member embodies their shared goal for the success of
the team 6. Common Visions, this is essential in all forms of group, they must share a common
goal and vision in order to successfully accomplish positive outcome and results for the team. 7.
Internal dissent, external cohesion, the team is to remain united and work together. 8. Strong
Supporting Cast, a developed cast of leaders is key when managing a team. The eight aspects are
a foundation in establishing a successful group.
