A BONNET, AS IMPORTANT
AS WHATS UNDERNEATH
Years of expertise went into the crafting of the iconic Jaguar E-type, and most
notably its bonnet, which is the essence of sleek and timeless design. Its the
most distinctive feature of your car, and with a car as distinctive as the E-type,
its important to keep it in immaculate condition.
The same expertise goes into the crafting of the genuine bonnets available
from Jaguar Heritage Parts. Created using original drawings and specications,
each bonnet is hand assembled by skilled craftsmen and nished with an
electrocoating for a smooth and awless surface. Genuine Jaguar Heritage
bonnets ensure your E-type remains a true original.

I
nto July and it hardly seems possible
I have been your Chairman for over
two years now and will be very quickly
winding down to November when
I hand over the reigns at our AGM, so
just three more ramblings from me.
Being Chairman has some very good upsides
and as is my usual practice I will look back at
some of the events I was very privileged to
be invited to attend over recent weeks, and
was lucky to do so, as the NHS cancelled my
operation at the eleventh hour once more.
SNG Barratt held one of their open days over
a May weekend, and the Saturday was taken
up with a factory tour, general chitchat with
members, with breakfast and lunch laid on by
Julian Barratt and his team. On the Sunday a few
of us were invited to Shelsley Walsh hill climb,
and again courtesy of SNG Barratts, we were
allowed to drive their E-type up the hill. Add to
that the chance to take my XJR up the hill as well
made for a great day, but the icing on the cake
was a very fast run up Shelsley in the passenger
seat of Julians F-TYPE AWD, great fun.
Later in May we were at an exhibition of
Jaguar art held in Coventry. The artist, Cesar
Pieri, works at Whitley as a Creative Specialist
Jaguar Design Manager and in his spare
time he enjoys creating his own artwork on
Jaguar bonnets. Some of his work can be
seen on our website, and I must say they

Obituary
It is very sad
that we have to
belatedly report
that Jean Barker
passed away
on Saturday
14th March,
having been
unwell for some
time. A very
independent
lady, recently she
had recovered
sufficiently to
Jean Barker, a very
enthusiastic member
start driving
of the Club, who passed
again and
managed to get away in March.
to the Wiltshire Region monthly meeting
only a couple of days before her death.
She was a founder member of the Wiltshire
Region back in 2007 and was soon providing
valuable guidance as a committee member
as well as being its Vice Chairman for the
past six years. In this role, Jean attended
virtually every Regional monthly meeting,
as well as taking part in many of the local
shows that the Region supported.
Jean, and her XK8, was also well known
amongst many of the Club stalwarts, having
taken part in every Entente Cordiale except
one since its inception. Initially, this was in
company with her husband Noel, who passed
away several years ago, and more recently
with one of her grandsons. In recent years, a
highlight of the Entente was the presentation,
by Jean, of the Noel Barker trophy for The
Car You Would Most Like to Drive Home In.
Jean will be sadly missed at Wiltshire
meetings and the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in
general. Our condolences go to her family.
Don Westcott.
Peter Clegg
It is very sad to report the death after a short illness, of Peter Clegg on 27th May.
Peter was a stalwart of the Leicester Region of the Club, always willing to help
out in the organisation or other matters and will be very sadly missed.
The Clubs condolences to his wife Sue and family.
Club seminars
W
e are pleased to report that
organisation has started into the
Clubs next crop of seminars.
The first will see a return of
the very popular Interior Trim Seminar, held
in conjunction with Furniture Clinic. This is an
excellent practical (hands on) seminar covering
the repair and renovation of leather upholstery
applicable to all cars, classic and modern.
Whether your interest is just in keeping your
upholstery clean or have issues with colour
fading, scuff marks, cracks or bad scars, all these
matters can be easily addressed with the right
materials and some knowledge. Knowledge
that you can personally gain from this seminar.
If you have any doubt about the practical
nature and useful information you can gain
from this seminar, or the overall benefit to your
upholstery, then speak to anyone who has been
on this popular seminar before. It is a great day
out, giving you the opportunity to learn how
to look after your upholstery. You can choose
between just coming along, taking in the
atmosphere and information, bring along some
of your own upholstery and have work done
for you by the professionals while you watch,
or actually get stuck in with their expertise
to guide you through the work yourself.
We have a new date and a new venue for this
one, the details of which are set up across:-

or email: nigel.thorley@jec.org.uk
If you want any work carrying out on
your upholstery, Furniture Clinic will need
specific information to ensure they have
the right material for the job (cost extra).
Therefore please fill out all the necessary
information on the pre-booking form.
Finally, entry to the seminar is only by prebooking. We cannot accept entries on the day.

1975. Heading the grid are the cars of Bob Meacham (Mark 1) and
Mike Rouse (Mark IX). Photo: Paul Skilleter collection.
40 years of classic
saloon racing
Even though it involves cars much lower
down the value spectrum than Lightweight
E-types, one anniversary that really
must not be allowed to pass unnoticed
is the 40th anniversary of classic saloon
racing. The idea for a race series for 1950s
saloons was first mooted in 1974, at a time
when only sports cars from that era had
opportunities to race. You just didnt see
historic saloons on the race track at all.
Mark VII owner Peter Deffee was the
leading instigator, and I was an enthusiastic
supporter of the idea, giving the proposal
a double page spread in the January 1975
issue of T&CC (Classic Cars), a magazine
I was then working for. Peters concept
was a series for pre-1957 saloons, with a
March 1957 cut-off date (except for certain
agreed exceptions). This intentionally
excluded the 3.4 litre Jaguar saloon which
we all knew would otherwise dominate
Roger Coupland
Very sadly, I have to report that just
before the feature on the XK120 LUF 964
was published in the last issue, Roger
Coupland, the Lincolnshire Club member
who revealed the cars racing history,
passed away in hospital. Our sincere
condolences to his family and friends, and
a tribute will follow in the next magazine.
Car supplied by
In 2014 the Club commenced a two year project to raise sufficient funds to build a new
lifeboat, a vital search and rescue facility for the seas around the UK coast. Last year you
successfully raised a total of 19,000 towards that goal. The Club and the RNLI are very
thankful for your contributions. This year we need to ensure we raise the rest of the 41,000
to secure that lifeboat, so again we ask for your loyal support for this worthy project. To do
that we have another fantastic car that you could win.

Joachims
update
David Marks brought along to Ickworth his early Mark VII and
promises to let it be seen more at Club events this year.
24
The solitary example of Mark VII and IX was this car at Ickworth.
Perhaps the owner would write in and tell us his story of the car.
The Beaman
Special
Joachim Lausmann explores the
background and current ownership of the one
known remaining Mark IX based Beaman
Special (or do you know otherwise??)
25
Later ownership
AOD 493A was bought by a friend
of Stanleys who had visited to buy
parts for another Mark IX that he was
restoring. He kept the car for three years
and his wife drove it to work daily.
Stanley has now owned the Beaman for
some eighteen years and has had a lot of
fun with it. He took it to a Jaguar Shoot
Out at Santa Pod raceway and the Beaman
performed well with 16 second runs (a good
E-type can do 15 seconds). They have been
to many shows over the years both locally
and nationally and it always attracts a lot of
curiosity and interest. The usual greeting
is Wow, great car! What is it? Stanley and
his wife attend a Rare Breeds Car Show in
Lavenham, East Anglia, and the Beaman has
been invited along on several occasions.
They have also enjoyed days at Thoresby
with the Club, plus Goodwood and Cowdrey
Park for the XK celebrations in 2008.
Since owning the car it has had a bare
metal respray and when they started
the work they found that the body sheet
metalwork was steel zinc coated and it
only needed an etch to start painting
again - Bill was obviously determined to
prevent any new rust appearing! It has
also had a new clutch, engine rebuild at
Scolar Engineers in Mendlesham, Suffolk,
carburettor rebuild, radiator recore, power
steering overhaul, and brakes resleeved
with stainless steel inserts. Last year Stanley
fitted a new stainless exhaust as used
by A S Motorsports of Bressingham on
their Aston Martin replicas. The Beaman
now has a wonderful growl which does
not set off the car alarms in Southwold
when they drive down the high street!
The Beaman is a rolling restoration
project but Stanley is pleased that she
is now looking good for her age! No
wrinkles but plenty of laughter lines!
Bill was proud to have the Beaman
mentioned in Paul Skilleters book Jaguar
Saloon Cars and also in Nigel Thorleys
Jaguar Mark VII to 420G - The Complete
Companion (as Forum Co-ordinator
I highly recommend both books)
I have also tried to find more information
about the Beaman Special in books and
previous reports. Stanley was a great help
here, as he has sent me some important
information and copies of old reports.
On 9th August 1973 the North Devon
Journey published an article Roundabout
by Derek Henderson, which reports in
detail about the coachbuilder Bill Beaman
and his three sons Mike, Allan and Roger.
The Beaman Specials are mentioneed as a
build to order project for around 3000.

Design
Jaguar created the blueprint for the first
ever sports saloon with the iconic Mark 2, a
car which distilled sports car performance
and dynamics into a stylish four-door body.
Body structure
The Jaguar XE body uses over 75%
aluminium content, which far exceeds
any other car in its class. This provides
a body structure with unrivalled low
weight: its light but also immensely strong
with extremely high levels of torsional
stiffness and safety without compromising
on vehicle design or refinement.

Specialist, Lightweight Vehicle Technologies.

aluminium XJ, the luxury saloons body

Advanced driver
assistance systems
Making its world debut in the new XE is
All Surface Progress Control (ASPC). This
unique traction management system, akin
to a low-speed cruise control, will give
the XE unrivalled all-weather capability
among rear-drive cars in the segment.
ASPC is ideal for low-grip surfaces such
as snow-covered driveways and ungritted
winter roads, and even wet grass. Developed
with the input of decades of Jaguar Land
Rover experience in off-road traction systems,
ASPC can electronically gain traction with
far less drama than the driver can achieve.
The system functions between 2mph and
19mph and is activated using the cruise control
switches on the steering wheel. Having set

Interior
The XE follows some elements of design
style taken from the F-TYPE with a deep
centre console, 8-inch touchscreen for the
new InControl infotainment system and the
now familiar Jaguar rotary drive selector
for automatic transmission models.
The contour-hugging front seats are
mounted low, creating a sports-car like
driving position with heating and cooling
options and 14-way power adjustment.
The rear seats may also be heated and
can offer a 40:20:40 split-fold a first for
Jaguar and a through-loading feature.
All occupants have generous amounts of
head and legroom, and the deeply scalloped
seatbacks liberate even more space for
passengers seated in the rear of the car.
Infotainment and
connectivity
The XEs touchscreen features a clear,
intuitive user interface designed to give
quick, easy access to all features and
functions. Voice control makes the system
even simpler InControl responds to plain
speech commands without the need to
navigate down through menus, allowing
drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
The XE can ensure drivers stay connected

and scored victories at other tracks too. But it never secured the
British saloon car championship, because no one car and driver
combination was dominant, and the championship was decided
on a points system which favoured consistent class winners.
In Europe, the 3.4 helped launch German Jaguar importer
Peter Lindners career racing Jaguars, before he (along with most
other top drivers) changed over to the 3.8 Mark 2. Some private

them could give the Mark 2 a run for its money on occasions!

As far as we know, just two of the cars

MCH 178 (the car owned by Chris Wood

This car was raced by Colin Lane and later
owned by Alan Lloyd, followed by John

Moving up
Having bemoaned the loss of the XK range
from production and written previously
about the way prices have been moving
for both XK8s and XKs, I have found myself
sorely tempted by the thought of changing
my 5.0 litre XK Portfolio for one of the final
run-out models. There is absolutely nothing
wrong with my current car and having only
just bought two expensive new tyres for
it, there is no doubt I should have thought
a little earlier about changing it. Just like
an itch that requires scratching, I cant
seem to stop looking at XK range cars for
sale and ultra-low mileage run-out cars
are selling quickly, typically within one to

Cost effective
Having a post retirement clear out I
realised recently that I had kept all the
service and repair receipts stuffed in a
file and decided to see exactly how much
those 160,000 miles had cost me.
To start with it cost 51,278 including
a special registration plate purchased
from the DVLA, (V8 AXK), and assuming
just 6000 residual value that amounts to
45,278 depreciation cost, or .28p. per mile.
It has had fourteen services, initially at
franchised dealers but in 2011 I met Peter
Hugo of Winspeed Motors, (the Prince
Charles lookalike) and classic Jag specialist
in Wood Street Village near Guildford. Their
Chief Engineer Jay has looked after the
car since then as if it was his own. As well
as the routine servicing it has been in for
work on nineteen other occasions, almost
all for brakes, tyres or suspension issues.
In total that means it has been worked on
every four months on average, or every
5000 miles, over the 10 years that I have
owned it. This service and other work has
cost 29,844. Apart from a new water pump
and a coil pack to correct a misfire, the
engine/gearbox has performed excellently.
I have replaced 35 tyres, almost 9
complete sets, at an average of around
17,500 miles per set. As I have always been
a fairly traditional driver, rarely stretching
the engine or the superchargers (although
I love it when they wind up and scream as
you are pressed back in your seat!), I would
have expected tyres to last a little longer.
On only one occasion when I was with
a German friend (a Porsche devotee of
course) on a quiet Sunday morning on an
unrestricted autobahn between the Dutch
border and Dusseldorf, did I really put my
foot to the floor. For a few miles I proved
to him that V8 AXK was not restricted to
155mph like his Carrera as we topped out
at over 170mph (as far as the dial goes),
before I chickened out. At that speed
the trip computer was indicating 4mpg
Making it a trio
In fact I have enjoyed V8 AXK so much
that I have now acquired a second X-100.
The keen eyed among you will already
have noticed that the blue car pictured is
not my original XK8. X143 NGK is in fact
a Pacific Blue XKR built in 2000 and first
registered in January 2001. That makes
it nearly three years older than V8 AXK
but it has only 6000 miles on the clock.
Before I bought it last year Winspeed
checked it out thoroughly and declared
that the low mileage looked genuine. The
two known design faults of early XKRs,
namely Nikasil lined engines and plastic
timing gear, were a concern but fortunately
this car has a steel linered engine so
no problem there, and I have had the
timing gear changed to later chains and
tensioners to avoid any problems from
that cause. Winspeed also did a full service
and changed all the fluids and seals and
a new gearbox gasket, and Im now ready
for another long stint in my new, old, car!

Article Content,
Procedures and
Safety Notes
Article content
All procedures described together with tools
and materials listed have applied to right hand
drive vehicles in the workshop but may not be
applicable to other cars. If different operations
and/or tools are required to those suggested
please amend the text accordingly. It is the
operators responsibility to ensure that work
carried out is suitable for the vehicle and individual
circumstances. If there is any doubt about
safety aspects of the car or tasks that are to be
undertaken professional advice should be sought.
Work procedure options
The way in which tasks will be approached
depends upon many factors, some of which are
vehicle model, personal preferences, available
equipment, individual requirements, etc. Whilst
its virtually impossible to write a procedure
that will be applicable to every situation
notes in the article may be of assistance.
Vehicle preparation prior to
work being undertaken
Please apply the following notes as applicable.
The car should be on a firm level surface.
An automatic transmission should be securely
locked in PARK, a manual gearbox in NEUTRAL.
Apply the hand brake, check that it is effective
and if not chock behind and in front of one
of the wheels to prevent the car moving.
The engine must be switched off
unless stated otherwise.
Keys should be removed from the car
until required for a specific operation.
An open bonnet should be propped if necessary
to ensure that it cannot fall accidentally.
76
advance mechanism.
29) Lightly smear engine oil
around the cam (3).
30) Apply a few spots of engine oil
to the centre of the cam (4).
31) Very lightly smear engine oil around
the rotor arm post and wipe off any
excess so that it cannot travel by
centrifugal force onto the rotor arm.
Oil at this point is to retard corrosion
and aid removal of the rotor arm.
32) The XK120 and Mk VII servicing
instructions state that the oil well
should be replenished with one or two
teaspoonsful of good grade engine oil.
33) Check that contact breaker and condenser
cables are not sufficiently close to an
earth point that they may come into
contact and resolve as required.
34) Inspect all cables in the distributor
for condition and security.
35) Check condition of the brush in
the centre of the distributor cap
and that it is free to move.
36) Align and fit the rotor arm.
37) Fit the distributor cap and
secure with spring clips.
38) Check that the HT cable caps are
pushed fully onto the spark plugs.
39) Check that the HT cable is pushed
fully into the ignition coil.
40) Carry out any service operations
that have not been mentioned
worn where necessary.
Protective covers should be
fitted over paintwork.
Working with petrol
Preferably take the car outside, away from
other vehicles and combustible materials.
Eye protection should be worn.
If petrol contacts the eyes irrigate
immediately with copious quantities
of water and seek medical advice.
Wear long protective gloves to prevent petrol
coming into contact with skin and clothes. If
gloves are not available tie rag around each
wrist to catch petrol that may otherwise
run down the arms and into clothing.
Wash petrol off skin with preferably
hand cleanser or hot soapy water as soon
as possible after the occurrence.
Petrol is highly inflammable, vapourises
quickly upon contact with hot
surfaces and may ignite easily.
Ensure that there are no naked lights or
other means of ignition in the vicinity.
Petrol vapour is heavier than air and can
travel a long way from the point of spillage.
Place a suitable and certificated fire
extinguisher in close proximity to
where work is to be undertaken.
Ensure that a person who is competent to
use the fire extinguisher is ready to assist.
Have rags, sand or other materials
available to soak up spilt petrol.
Place in a convenient position a
suitable closed lid container to accept
petrol contaminated materials.
Clear away spilt petrol immediately
after the occurrence.
Ensure that drained petrol is stored
in suitable closed lid containers away
from heat or direct sunlight.
Material disposal
Fluids and other materials must be disposed
of in accordance with applicable legislation.

February 2015
All the interior of the car was removed, apart
from the front drivers seat. The car at this
point was transported to XJK, the independent
Jaguar specialists in Stoke on Trent. They gave
the car a final inspection, a service, wheel
alignment and check over before the car was
sent to the body shop to be repainted.
May 2015
The interior was now refitted and the car
was thoroughly cleaned. Some new parts
were fitted, including mud flaps, aerial
mast, wiper blade, and new XJR 100 tread
plates. The car was finished and successfully
passed the MOT test with no observations.
A summary of
the project
Back in January 2014 I purchased what I
thought was a nice XJR 100 that had only
covered 50,000 miles with one previous owner.
When I first viewed the car it appeared to be
in reasonably good condition, looking very
attractive with its low mileage, full service
history and a good length of MOT remaining. I
knew the car required some attention to bring
it back to its former glory. However, the level of
corrosion which I exposed and repaired (all of
which could not have been seen at the initial
viewing) leads me to advise other enthusiasts
to be very careful when buying cars of this
age. These repairs are very expensive and
there is so much it is not easy to identify.
I certainly did not expect to spend around
1300 hours and just over 14,000 on the car.
It is now time to spend less time working on
it and more time enjoying the ownership
of it. The car will be on show at various
Club events and other transport shows.

leaves, paper etc., which builds up in between the
air conditioning condenser and radiator faces. You
cannot see this easily from in front as all you do
find is the front face of the condenser. If you look
closely with a torch through the gap between the
top of the oil cooler and base of the condenser,
this may indicate the extent of the problem.
Oil leaks also contribute to
radiator degradation.
At the same time, it is strongly advised to
change both thermostats for new 82 degree
C ones, and ensure they are fitted with the
bleed pin at the 12 Oclock position.

V12 misfire/backfire
My 1977 XJ!2 has a really bad
misfire/backfire from both the
exhaust and intakes. Information
from the previous owner indicated that it
does not have the original engine and it is
possible it came from an XJ-S instead.
Transmission leak
I have a puzzling problem with
the automatic transmission of my
1990 XJ12. The car runs well and
performs as you would expect. However
once the car has been parked for a while
after running, the transmission fluid comes
out of the gearbox dipstick/filler tube.
There does not appear to be any oil coming
out while the car is running, nor while it is
standing without being run beforehand.
I originally thought it might be a leak
in the oil cooler allowing pressure to get
from the engine cooling system into the
gearbox, and force the oil out, but this
has been checked and all seems ok.
Can you suggest what is causing this
apparent build up of pressure in the gearbox?
Tom Gardner.

though the museum is in the Northern
Territories state, the plate showed it had
been a Queensland registered car.
If anyone is visiting Alice Springs, I
recommend an afternoon there if you
can stand the likely 40deg C temperature.
Anyone with a bit of petrol in their blood
will find it fascinating. There are hundreds
of vehicles, bits, parts, all with a tale to tell.
There is a neighbouring museum to the
Ghan train that ran to Adelaide on the old
track which is worth the time too. Highly
recommended. The website is worth a look
too. http://www.roadtransporthall.com
Finally, one tale of the Bush Mechanics
told of one trucker who had a front wheel
bearing completely break up way out
in the bush. He salvaged a unit from
a wreck but it was smaller than on his
truck. He spent two days filing down the
stub axle to make it fit. It got him home
and saved his life, his truck and his load!
I think we should make him an honorary

XJS foibles!
Twenty year old XJS and a twenty year old owner/driver fabulous!
The Timeline
I hope that everyone visiting Ickworth was
able to take some time to admire the Jaguar
Timeline display. Nigel Thorley provided a
very informative commentary on each model
present and it gave owners of the cars the
opportunity to share details about their
particular vehicles. Two XJSs did us proud
on the Timeline display and it was a pleasure
inspecting both the Pre-HE V12 coupe and
the Celebration 4.0 litre coupe parkedup alongside each other, representing
the early and late variants of our cars.
The Pre-HE XJ-S was a superb example,
owned for many years by Dave Stewart
from Peterborough. Soon our Editor is
due to carry out a comparison of this
car to a contemporary rival, so I am
sure we will all look forward to that.

This one is full
of speed. The
paint-strokes
are driving
the car on and
the turn of the
front wheels
to the right
show the way
the driver is controlling the drift into this righthand bend. Im sure this is the sort of authentic detail that Dexters
own motor-racing experiences bring to his art. The number 6
just discernable on the bonnet and the red trade plate below
the right-hand head light confirm this as Hawthorns car.
One of my
favourite Dexter
images showing
a hard-driven
club racer E-type
drifting nicely
round a righthander. This
is an excellent
example of the
technique that
gives the eye one
or two orientation
marks, like
the bumpers and the air intake, with virtually no substantial detail
anywhere else. There are just enough hints to encourage the mind
to fill the gaps and, in effect, you create your own image.

she dumped The Atlantic and half The Pacific on
