1. SCOPE
The scope of this document is to provide functional and design specifications for the MRS C38EMI Locomotive . Engine content was dictated from Marketing Product Description and
Engineering System Functional Specification. This specification is an exception specification for
an EFI 7FDL16 diesel engine which is based on the baseline system design specification listed
below. This specification shall take precedence if a discrepancy is found between the
documents.

3. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
The engines for MRS locomotive kits shall conform with the 7FDL EFI SDS 41A224148 in addition to
the following (this document takes precedence):
Engine Rating

The model 7FDL16N93 engine for MRS locomotives shall be rated and tested to 1050rpm and
4000GHP.

Camshaft Assembly

The engine shall utilize 7FDL16 standard EFI cams. (Similar to 41E914364G2)

Power Assembly

Power assemblies shall be 12.7:1 low compression ratio which utilize the standard FDL piston
crown. (Similar to 41E914299G4)

Performance

This engine is not configured to meet any SFC or emission guarantees.

Fuel Piping

The engine shall be provided with a fuel heater. (Similar to 84E902170G1)

Paragon fuel transfer pump shall be used with this engine. (Similar to 84A207879P1)

45 canister filter with 2-stage 12 micron and 5 micron filtration (Similar to 41B520396G7)

No water cutoff valve provided for fuel heater.

Fuel sight glass and quick disconnect pressure test fitting provided (Similar to 84E902170G1)

Electronic Fuel Injection / Wiring / Electrical Integration


NOTE! for complete detailed electrical integration information see base engine specification
referenced in section 2 above.

The engine shall utilize the latest Bosch fuel injection equipment along with 2-stage 12/5 micron
fuel filtration and a Paragon fuel transfer pump. (Similar to 84E902170G1)

The engine shall utilize a standard 7FDL16 Bosch EFI wiring harness. (Similar to specification
41A222886P2 and schematic 84D721018 Sheet 2)

The engine shall utilize a Bosch EFI sensor box (including the oil return line for box heating). The
schematic is to be similar to 41E914410G3.

Pop test switch will be provided on the sensor box for diagnostics of EFI system.

The locomotive shall utilize a 17FM664F1 EGU panel. ACP communication serial link is NOT
required between the EGU and Locomotive control system.

Mainframe Assembly (Frame, Oil Pan, Crankshaft)

The engine shall utilize a short nose crankshaft with NO tapered end for auxiliary drive. The
mainframe shall be configured for EFI, and shall have NO provisions for high performance muffler
mounting hardware. (Simlar to 84D721160G7)

The engine shall utilize a no-drain oil pan. (Similar to 41D715665P1)

The engine shall utilize standard perforated alternator guards. (Similar to 41D715878G7)

Dipstick shall be standard FDL16 with Portugese language. (Similar to 41D715387G5)

Air Handling System (Turbocharger, Intercoolers, Exhaust, Crankcase Ventilation)

The engine shall utilize a 7S1716 turbocharger (which requires no inlet air duct). This turbo does
not have provisions for turbo speed sensor. Turbo shall be configured for split cooling and rated
power for this application (Similar to 41E914544G1).

The Turbo Installation shall be standard for split cooled AC4400. (Similar to 41C640620G4)

The engine shall utilize Tier 1, split cooling intercoolers. (Similar to 84D711689G1)

Muffler Installation (reference only on engine DL) will be standard for split cooled Dash 9 (similar
to 84D721098ABG1).

The engine shall have a coalescer mounted on the front of the engine. (Similar to 84D711690G2).

Cooling Provisions

This engine shall be configured for split cooling. (Similar to 41C640620G4, 84D711691G1)

The engine shall utilize a standard high water header. (Similar to 84D711691G1)

Control / Software Requirements

This engine / wiring harness is compatible with E016161f (low compression engine) EGU
software. [Indication of EGU software E016161f shall be included on the Engine DL.]

Operator Interfaces

The engine shall utilize the left bank cam gear cover with EFI provisions and NO internal barring
gear. (Similar to 84D721007G1 and G2). The 2 pin BOS connector similar to 41A222890G1 will
come with this cover.

The engine shall have standard service steps. (Ref 41B520744G1)

Engine labeling shall be Portugese language appropriate for this engine configuration (Similar to
41B520803G2).

Weight

Nominal engine weight (as shipped from Grove City dry, prepped for shipment) shall be 45,650
pounds.

Drawing List

The engine shall be built to engine DL 41A113373G1.
