My general area of interest is disabled people. My topic is whether or not diversity

training be a mandatory part of the academic course of study. I choose this area because I felt
that it was important for me to know why we should learn about them--their skills and needs. I
know that not every disabled person has the same problems in learning or thinking and that it
takes time and patience for someone who has no disability to learn the different disabilities
someone else has. This has and will continue to be a learning stretch to me because I have
learned so much about disabled people. I am even a teacher assistant for a special needs class
at my school. Ive learned to step out into my comfort zone and step up for a disabled person
that is being bullied.
My thesis statement for my paper is: As a deterrent to discrimination in favor of ablebodied people, diversity training should be a mandatory part of the academic course of study at
every stage of a student's educational career. The first part of the essay will analyze how
elementary, middle, and high school students are exposed to students with disabilities. I plan to
study why should schools teach kids about disabled people and at what stage a child should
learn about the different forms of people with disabilities. The second topic that I will talk about
is ableism. I will explore the different types/sources of discrimination and how to prevent
ableism. The third topic is life--how anyone can continue these practices into adulthood. Llast
my counter argument--Some parents believe that teaching kids about disabled people is
irrelevant and useless.
My plan for my product is to raise money for the Teleton Foundation. The Teleton
Foundation is a rehabilitation center in Texas, USA. This foundation helps children with
disabilities across America. It is a bit challenging because I have ordered 42 piggy banks from
the foundation. My goal for each piggy bank is to collect at least $100 dollars, the cost of one
hour of rehabilitation per child. What I will do is set each piggy bank in a different class and
explain to the students what my plans are for this foundation and what I will be doing in order to
achieve my goal. The person that I choose as my Expert in the field would be Mrs. Hankins. I
want to work with this person because she has been working with disabled kids for over 15

years. I know that she has had and still has experience with them and will help me learn more of
what I need to know.
Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone else's work and or ideas and passing it off as
their own. Plagiarism is not a game but is a serious violation. If someone plagiarizes what is the
point for that person to learn if they are not going to do any of the work and they just copy
everything someone else has already done. They will fail. I understand that if I plagiarize there
will be serious consequences. It is important to be an ethical person because you should know
the difference between right and wrong. You should always follow the rules and be professional
with everything you do.

Sincerely,

Maria G. Raygoza
