Thelegalitiesofstudents'rightswillcontinuetoplaguethedailyoperationsofpublic
schoolstherefore,researchshouldrobustlyseektoinvestigatepreparationprograms,the
coursecontentofeducationlawcourses,andtheimpacttheyhaveonprincipals'
knowledgeineducationlaw.Thepurposeofthisquantitativestudywastodeterminethe
variationinselfperceptionsoftheirknowledgeofeducationlawrelatedtostudents'rights
bytypeoftrainingreceivedandbytheirpreviousinvolvementinschoollitigation.The
AlabamaPrincipals'LegalSurvey(APLS),aforcedchoice44iteminstrument,wasusedto
collectdemographicandprofessionalinformation.Thesurveywassubmittedto331
principalsviathesimplerandomsamplingtechnique.Therewere312surveysreturned,
yieldinga94.3%responserate.Datawereanalyzedintwoways:descriptiveand
inferentialstatistics.TheIndependentTTestwasemployedtodetermineiftherewasa
statisticallysignificantdifferenceinthemeanselfratingsoftheprincipals'knowledgeof
educationlaw(dependentvariable)bytheindependentvariables.Thereisaneedfor
researchtoremainconsistentinincreasingthelegalknowledgeofnewandnovice
principals,andtoproviderecommendationstoimprovethedeliveryandpedagogical
methodsinpreparationprograms.Expertsareofthesamemind,concurringthatitis
importantthatschoolpersonnelarecognizantandproficientineducationlaw.

Parentsofstudentsinspecialeducationhavegreaterbarrierstoparentalinvolvementthan
parentsofstudentsingeneraleducation.Littleisknown,however,aboutthefactorsthat
facilitateorimpedeinvolvementpracticesforthisgroup.Thispreliminarystudyinvestigated
theextenttowhichthemotivationalfactorsfromHooverDempseyandSandler's()Model
ofParentInvolvement(i.e.,ParentRoleActivityBeliefs,ParentEfficacy,GeneralSchool
Invitations,SpecificTeacherInvitation,SpecificChildInvitations,PerceivedKnowledgeand
Skills,andPerceivedTimeandEnergy)predictedtheHomeBased,SchoolBased,and
SpecialEducationInvolvementof137parentsofelementaryschoolstudentsinspecial
educationfromtwosuburbanschooldistrictsinupstateNewYork.Familystructure,
race/ethnicity,andfamilysocioeconomicstatus(SES)werealsoexamined.Parentsinthe
currentstudyreportedbeingmoreinvolvedinbothhomeandschoolbasedactivitieswhen
childrenspecificallyrequestedtheirinvolvement.SchoolBasedInvolvementwasalso
predictedbyparents'perceptionsoftheirtimeandenergyandtheirlevelofresponsibilityin
supportingtheirchild'seducation,aswellastheirreportedlevelofeducation(anindication
ofSES).Aninterestingandcounterintuitiveinverserelationshipwasfoundbetween

Thesefindingsarediscussedandsuggestionsaremadeforhowtoincreaseinvolvement
forthisspecificgroupofparents.

Teachershaveandwillalwaysplayanimportantroleinthedevelopmentofachildsmind
andsocialdevelopmentskills.Thearticlediscussesproperandhealthypeerinteraction
methodsteachersuseinordertohelpbuildthatsocialskillwithintheirstudents.The
strategiesdiscussedinclude:(a)preparingthephysicalenvironmentforplay(e.g.,toy
selection,themes)(b)enteringandexitingchildren'splaygracefully,(c)usingtalkto
promoteplayepisodesandsocialinteractions,and(d)selectingthemostappropriate
interventionstrategiesbasedondirectobservation,whichisanabstractfromtheauthor.
ThearticleexplainsTeacherTalk,whichreferstothespecifichelpthatateacherprovides
tostudentsinhelpingthembetterlanguagelearners.Therearedifferentformatsto
TeacherTalk.Thefirstformatisrecasting,whichisbasicallygivingfeedbackfrom
gatheringinformation.Thesecondformatisrepeatingorstatingwhatstudentssay.The
thirdformatisexpandingorwhenateacherrewordsastudent'ssentence,givingthema
moreindepthanswer.Thefourthformatisquestioning,orhavingateacherrelaya
questiontoastudentandansweringbackandforthquestions.Thefifthandfinalformatis
prompting,orwhentheteachersignalsacertainquetoastudent.Teachertalkisaform
thathelpseducatorstouseandenhancepeerinteractionintheclassroom.Whilestudents
areatplayoringroupssettingswithoneanother,teacherswillobservethestudentsand
gatherinformationabouteachoftheirstudentsandfromanenvironmentaroundthe
studentsinterestsandabilities.

M:Itcangetbusythroughoutthedaytobalancetheparents,discipline,
scheduling,it'sallmultitasking.Oneminuteyouareschedulingameetingwitha
parentandthenextisdealingwithadisciplineproblem.Itcanbehardto
balanceallofthesechallenges,somedaysareharderthanothers.
B:Thehardestpartofmyjobisbalancingmyresponsibilitieswithmypriorities.
Therearethetasksthathavetogetdone,managerialtasksthatcomewith
runningabuilding.Therearealsothehighpriorityitemslikesupportingteachers
andstudentstostructureacollaborativeenvironmentthatincorporatesquality
curriculum,soundinstructionalpractices,datatoprovideconstructive,targeted
feedback,andsupporttofostereachstudentsacademic,social,andemotional
needsthenwewillhaveastudentcenteredteachingandlearningcommunityin
whichallstudentscanachievetheiracademicandsocialpotential.

M:Yourkidsneedtoknowthatyouarethereforthemwithissuesinschooland
home.It'simportanttomakesureyoubuildrelationshipswiththechildand
parentsotheyknowyouarevisibleandavailable.Someparentsdon'tknow
whattoexpectonthissideofthespectrum,whethertheyhaveneverhadachild
inelementaryschoolbefore,soit'simportantformetobeavailablefor
everyone.
B:Iamanadvocateforeverychildinthebuilding.Itakeanactiveroleintheir
educationbygettingtoknowthemandbeingpresentaroundthebuildingandin

M:Itsallaboutbuildingtherelationship,youhavetobeconsistent,kidsthrivein
routine.Createstructureofexpectationsindifferentenvironments,they
understandexpectationswhenadultsholdthemaccountable.Therearealways
challengesit'simportanttobuildarelationshipwithbothpositiveandnegative

behavior.It'snotokaytoonlygiveoutpunishments,rewardsandpraiseisjust
aseffective.

asasafeandcomfortingadultinherlife.NormallyIstrivetomakeeachchildand

toknoweachchild'snameandsomethingaboutthembeforetheendoftheday.

Bri4:Ilovetoseehowmuchthestudentsgrowbytheendoftheyear.Someof
thestudentscomeintofourthgradereadingatalowerlevelandthenwhenthey
leave,theycanbeattherightplacetheyshouldbe.Theytrulydoimpressme.

limitedreadingandwritingexperienceandusuallyhalfofmyclassroomenters
firstgradebelowgradelevel.IhavealotofworktodoovertheyearsowhenI
seehowfarthesestudentshavecomeitmakesmefeelveryproudofthework
theydidandwhatIdidaswell.

something.Ilikethechallengingkids.Theyholdaspecialplaceinmyheart.A

anger.Ihaveseenitinsomekids.Theysinganddanceandtheyaretotallyfine

dayofschoolisabout5timesforme,sinceIseethemonceaweek.Itis
importanttoseteverythingforthefirstdaysotheyknowwhatisexpectedof

them.
Bri:Crazy.Ihaveparentscomingintodropoffmedication,studentscomingin
withillnessesthathappenedoverthesummer,otherstudentsoncrutchesfrom
theirsportsinjuriesthathappened.Itsthebusiestdayoftheyearbyfar.
Whatisthemostrewardingpartofyourjob?

Bre:Itisveryrewarding.Youseekidscomeoutoftheirshells.Seeingkidswith
autismoremotionalproblemsthatmaystruggleinaclassroom...Youknowthere
wasastudentwhohadautismandhehadasololastyear.Hesanginfrontof
theschoolandeveryonecheered.Overall,itisadifferentclassroomsetting.
Bri:ItisalwaysrewardingtoknowwhenIdoagoodjob.Whetheritbetalking
withtheparentthroughwhattodotohelptheirchildwiththeirfirstconcussion
andthembeingthankfulthatIamthereorhelpingthestudentwhothoughtthat
theycouldntmakeitthroughthedaybecausetheydidnotfeelwell.Ihadagirl
diagnosedwithtypeonediabetesandatthesametimeshehadsomefamily
troublesgoingon.Iwasthereforhereverystepoftheway.Herfatherendedup
callingmeonedaythankingmeforallIvedoneforherandforbeingsucha
positiveinfluence.Overall,itisarewardingjob.
