Label the blanks A-D inn the following diagram.

Diagram on pg.47

2) How can volcanoes be beneficial and harmful to the surrounding area? Example?

Pg.59

3) Describe the process of sea-floor spreading.

-created at mid-ocean ridge

-magma escapes to earths surface turning into lava
-cools and forms new rock
-proves continental drift theory
-old ocean floor pushed away/ recycled when subducted
@ convergent boundaries

4) Compare and contrast chemical and mechanical weathering.

Physical- abrasion ,organic activity, temperature change, pressure change, ice
wedging
Chemical- changes chemical makeup of the rock, rusting, sulfuric acid, other acids,
acid rain, water

Periodic Study Guide- Term 1 Periodic 3

Mr. Kiley-7th grade science
Period 3-1617-SCI103- CH2 (Section 1-3; Ch3 Sections 1&2)
Vocab/concepts:
Inner core-innermost layer of earth, consisting of solid metal

Plate boundaries- seismic activity, earthquakes, and volcanoes

lithosphere- the hard outer layers of earth made up of the crust and upper mantle

earthquake- the sudden violent shaking of earth

What happens when two continental plates collide?

-They form mountains

Seismograph- an instrument that uses inertia to detect and measure seismic waves

Tsunami- a huge ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake

What affect does resistance to flow have on volcanic eruptions?

-what kind of landform your going to get
- explosiveness is affected by the magmas resistance to flow

Active volcano- classified as active if it has erupted since the last Ice Age or during
the last 10,000 years

Hot spot- in the middle of a plate

Shield volcano-(with illustration)

Pg.55

Mechanical weathering- (with agents)

-the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces without any change to the chemical
makeup of the rock
-pressure change, ice wedging, temperature change, organic activity, abrasion

Ice wedging- the process in which repeated cycles of melting and freezing cause a
rock to break

Erosion- the process in which rock particles are moved from location to another

Deposition- the process in which eroded rock particles are laid down in a new
location

Runoff of water- water that flows over earths surface

Delta- a fan shaped landform created by the deposition of sediment at a river mouth

Sandbar- a long narrow ridge of sand beneath the water

Floodplain- sides of the banks of rivers that can flood

What is between a floodplain and a delta?

-very fertile soil

Ring of fire- zone of major earthquakes and volcanic activity that extends all the
way around the Pacific plate

Hot spot- in the middle of the pacific plate like Hawaii

Seafloor spreading-Created at the mid-ocean ridge

-magma escapes to earths surface and becomes lava

- lava cools and forms new rock

-proves theory of continental drift
-old ocean floor is pushed away/ recycled when subducted at convergent
boundaries
