Procedures/Strategies
Day 1 (add additional days as needed)
Sponge Activity (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them into the mindset of the concept to be
learned)
Students will listen to a set of three 21st Century songs and work together to find
images that the artist uses to compare two unlike things.
1) Firework- Katy Perry
2) Lost In The World-Kanye West
3) Umbrella- Rihanna
Anticipatory Set (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the days lesson)
Ask the question: Why do authors or artists use images in their writing?
Activating Prior Knowledge (what information will be shared with/among students to connect to prior
knowledge/experience) Students will be asked to describe the look, smell and feel of a set of
items that I will bring to class, using similes.

Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)

We call this Figurative Language but today we will focus on Similes and Metaphors
1)Ask students what is Figurative Language and take into consideration their
interpretations.
2)Define the term:
Figurative language expresses an idea that goes beyond the actual meaning
of the words for a more descriptive result.
3)Focus in on Similes and metaphors:
a. Okay! So now that we understand a broad picture of what figurative language
is lets focus on similes and metaphors.
b. Who wants to be the brave soul to try and define a simile?
c. Present the power point:
- So first we are going to work out what a simile is (Show Slide)
a. A simile is a comparison between two unlike subjects using like or as.
FOCUS ON METAPHORS
a. A metaphor is not to be confused with a simile because although it does
compare two unlike objects, it DOES NOT use like or as.
Final : ASK STUDENTS TO RECALL THE DEFINITION OF BOTH A SIMILE
AND METAPHOR.

-Students will work together to read the first paragraph of Martin Luther Kings I
Have A Dream speech and carefully determine/highlight the metaphors that are
used. We will review it together.
