Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) or commonly known as Concrete Hollow Block

(CHB) is primarily used building material for the construction of walls. It is usually
made from the mixture of 1/2 water, cement, and sand. Using concrete hollow blocks
alone in the formation of wall is not advisable since CHB walls are very weak against
lateral loads (push or pull forces of the nature). Therefore, CHBs are reinforced with
vertical and horizontal steel bars and poured concrete to increase their resistance to
lateral loads.
Engineers, not only here in the Philippines, but to other selected countries as
well use CHBs as the basic building material for building houses and high rise
buildings.
