Chapter 3B Culminating Project

Culminating Project is very important, we had to learn how tsunamis work. How
waves work. Tsunamis and waves are completely different. We also have to be able to
read tide charts because tides are very important. Tides are made when the Moon and
the Earth are lined up. Hurricanes are super dangerous they can last for several days
and have powerful winds and rain.
A Tsunami is a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine

landslide, or other disturbance. You cant tell when a

tsunami is going to happen because the waves are
building up underneath the ocean. A tsunami is a
wave that never breaks. A tsunami can tear apart
cars, buildings, and kill people. A tsunami goes and
once its done it retracts taking whatever it took down with it back to sea. Tsunami
waves do not resemble normal undersea currents or sea waves, because their
wavelength is far longer.
The way waves are made is when wind picks up. When
the wind starts to pick up thats when waves are made. The
period of time required for wave crest at point A to reach point B
is important. Waves are different the tsunamis waves break
and tsunamis dont. The longer the wind blows the bigger the

waves are. Wave motion transfers energy from one point to another, which displace
particles of the transmission mediumthat is, with little or no associated mass transport.
Along most of the coast, tides rise twice and fall twice each day. These are called
semidiurnal tides. Time and tide wait for no
man, not even a little boy rushing to finish
his sand castle before it gets washed
away. (What Are Tide Tables? How Stuff
Works) The change in the water is what tides
are. If the winds all a sudden get stronger so
will the tides. Reading a tide chart is not that hard it shows you when the waves start to
pick up or lower down at the hour.

How tides are made is when the earth and moon line up in a certain way. The
gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the
direction of the moon. (How Tides Are
Made. The Moon And Tides) There is
about twelve hours and twenty five minutes
between the two high tides. Tides are the
periodic rise and falling of large bodies of
water. There are four types of tides. There is
Lunar tides which are tides that are created
because the Earth and the moon are
attracted to each other, just like magnets are attracted to each other. Next there is
Spring tides which is tides when the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the
moon and sun are combined. Next there is a Neap Tide which is during the moon's
quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel
each other. Lastly there is the rarest tide out there which is The Proxigean Spring Tide is
a rare, unusually high tide.

A hurricane is a huge storm! It can be up to 600 miles across and have

strong winds spiraling inward and upward at
speeds of 75 to 200 mph.(Hurricanes, Weather
Wiz Kids Weather Information For Kids).
Hurricanes are very common on the east coast.
Just recently we had hurricane Mathew.
Hurricanes can tear up houses, cars, buildings, and many more. Hurricanes can last for
days. Hurricanes can easily kill people if you are not protected.
ENSO stands for El Nino Southern Oscillation. ENSO occurs every two to ten
years. ENSO is centered in the Pacific
Ocean. This makes the global climate
change that deviate from normal conditions.
The strong Southeast trade winds push
water from the Americas toward Asia. The
warm side for the pacific is on the western
side. This causes lots of monsoons and lots of rain in central Asia. El Nino makes
weaker trade winds. This makes the warm pool migrates eastward. The upwelling stops
off the coast of the Americas which drives away fish.
In conclusion for the Culminating Project is where we learned how the ocean
worked with all natural resources. These things may cause serious damage but without
them this could ruin our planet. We need hurricanes, tsunamis, tide charts, tides, and
waves. People think that tsunamis and waves are exactly alike but waves break and
tsunamis just keep going.
