MDD 5
Instructional Decision Making

Student Response to Lesson:

Most students were committed on the two lessons that I prepared, many learners
proved themselves to be quite willing to cooperate and participate during class.
Consequently, they (students) responded almost entirely as I had predicted. On the
other hand, what makes the difference in students responses and learning is
definitively motivation. That is why my lessons were prepared in order to provide
specific topics that some students might have never seen before, and solve doubts
about the problematic topics or others. All this, in a relaxed environment, for them to
feel comfortable expressing their opinion and participate during classes. Additionally,
this was quite a challenge for me, due to my lack of experience being the one who
leads a class, even so there was a regular class (20 students) but thanks to my
observations`s notes from my assigned class, plus, numerous advice from the
teacher in charge of the class, I was able to lead the class with confidence, but at the
same time conscious about the context.

Adjustments for Lesson:

Firstly, I need to contextualize this section by establishing that the teacher in charge
of the class, ask me to do the lesson according to some part of different units in
order to cover some weaknesses that student could have. Furthermore, the first
class was about ED and ING adjectives, their uses and function of the most common
ones. However, the adjustments that I would like to make in order to improve this
lesson, were one in specific, that really affected my teaching strategy, was the wrong
use of prepositions while I gave instructions, plus the incorrect grammatical order
that I say in my sentences.

For the second class, I review some phrasal verbs in context. The aim was to make
them recognize the easiest and hardest part in grammar terms. The adjustments that
I would like to mention, were the same as the previous lesson, the wrong use of
preposition in sentences and some grammar mistakes.

Analysis of Learning Results

Whole Class:
By taking students performance into account I can conclude that both lessons were
very efficient and effective. Moreover, students were able to understand both topics
(ED and ING adjectives) (Phrasal verbs). I can conclude that it was a completely
gratifying opportunity for me to deal with a normal class, and accomplished most of
my goals as a future teacher. Some students remark that my enthusiasm and joyful
attitude help a lot to improve the classroom environment and to keep the learners
motivated during the lesson.
Individuals:
The first student that I choose to describe her performance, was a girl who has a
good level of English and always had a high participation in class. Additionally, most
of the time she was thoughtful to their classmates and willing to help me as well.
On the other hand, the second student was different than the previous one. He also
has a good level of English, however he was not as participative as the first learner.
This Ss was very quiet and shy in class, but he always proved that he understands
the topic. Even though, he never asks me any question nor personally neither in front
of the class.

Impact of your instruction on Students` learning

Instructional strategies and activities that contributed most to student
learning.
According to my criteria, students responded relatively positive when they received
simplest explanation concerning the topic. In fact, they express that they had
troubles understanding theory behind topics. Hence, these friendly explanations
and positive attitude helped provide a trustworthy environment.

Comparatively, the activities that contributed most to students learning were those in
which they needed to use the language (and the topic) orally in real life situations.
These types of activities provide students the opportunity of using their L2 outside
the context of a classroom.

How teaching behaviors affected student learning.

Even though it was a challenging for me to lead a class, due to our lack of
experience, I have to say that I have a personality that allows me to overcome
situations in which I need to be in front of an audience. Furthermore, having the time
to plan the class and prepare the activities turned out to be essential when dictating
the class. Additionally, simplifying the subject in order to avoid students feeling
overwhelmed was another factor that allow student to commit with the class and its
tasks. Finally, having a wide variety of activities was crucial for students not
performing repetitive and classical tasks.

Reflect on the main things you have learned about teaching
This first teaching experience makes me consider of my decision of being a
teacher. Even though my students make me feel very comfortable inside the
classroom, I know that not always will be this way. Doing a lesson was a
challenge that we had to keep learning.
One of the factors that we consider one of the most important is to plan classes in
advances, due to it gives you the opportunity of guide yourself while dictating the
class. Additionally, we realize that dictate a class is not an easy thing to do, in fact,
we conceived it as a sort of performance that requires high concentration and

preparation, in order to avoid errors in pronunciation or intonations while explaining

the subject or giving instructions.
Describe one or two areas of professional growth
Being a teacher is hard work, make a lesson plan was by far the most difficult work
that I had to do since I`m become a university student. I realize that, we need to take
into account many important aspect that contribute to an effective teaching. Finally,
we will never stop learning from this profession and there is nothing that we cannot
do. If we believe that we can change one student's mind, it means that we can
change the world.
