Annotated Bibliography: Ted Bundys Psychological Issues and Behavior
The purpose of this bibliography is to uncover the truth as to why Ted Bundy began a
murderous rampage through several states. Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers
in American history. Bundy is interesting to research because he was a successful young man
who was very disturbed deep down and could not hold his rage any longer. The sources listed are
used to find what events in Bundys past caused these emotional problems he possessed. Also,
the sources uncover how Bundy targeted, murdered, and disposed of his victims as well as the
trials following the crimes. These sources consist of articles, interviews, documentaries, and
books.
Hinch, Ronald. Researching Serial Murder: Methodological and Definitional Problems.
Electronic Journal of Sociology, 1998. Web. 21 November 2016.
https://www.sociology.org/content/vol003.002/hinch.html. This article by Ronald Hinch
examines the issues related to the research on serial killers and their stigmas. This source
is intended for people of higher education, interested in why someone would commit
serial murder. Hinch focuses on four main aspects of a typical serial killer, 1.) The
notion killers are male 2.) The assumption they kill strangers 3.) The notion they do not
do it for financial gain and 4.) Stereotypes that their victims are powerless people. This
source references books and articles written by professionals who study serial murder.
This source helps compare some of Bundys traits to that of other serial killers for a better

Huseman 2
understanding of his behavior. This source is credible because the author Ronald Hinch is
a doctorate professor who specializes in serial murders, violent crimes and has several
journal and books publishes. Despite the authors credentials, this source was published
almost 20 years ago. This source receives an 8 out of 10. The author is very credible and
there is plenty of good information. Though, the thrilling topic is made boring to read in
this article.
Larsen, Richard W. Bundy: The Deliberate Stranger. Prentice-Hall: New Jersey, 1980. Print.
This book is very similar to The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule. The author composes
Bundys major life events and other information into an interesting story. This book is
useful in both research and entertainment purposes. Readers can see several details about
Bundy that were not shown in the media at the time of his criminal career. The
publication contains testimony from psychologists, police officers, prison guards, and
other people who had previously interacted with Bundy. This book allows me to gather
testimony from these professionals and compare it to other sources for a better
understanding of Bundys psychopathy. Researching in this way also confirms the
reliability of the book when the information matches other credible sources. Richard
Larsen was a reporter for the Seattle Times. He had interviewed Bundy long before he
began his murder spree. He is not a psychologist in the field, but with his journalism
background, he effectively gathered an abundance of accurate information regarding Ted
Bundy. This book was published in 1980, but the facts are still relevant. Ted Bundy was
put to death in 1979. This book contains somewhat limited information regarding
Bundys psychopathy, but is still one of the most outstanding sources used in my
research.

Marshall, Timati. "A&E Biography - Serial Killer ''Ted Bundy''" YouTube. YouTube, 2015. Web.
21 November 2016.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8kstcZmrns. This source is
credible because it includes testimony from friends of Bundy as well as police officers
and other people involved with Ted Bundy in some way. The documentary gives an
outline of Bundys life at home and college and later shows details of his murders and
how he targeted his victims. This documentary also gives details of murder weapons and
methods. This documentary targets any viewer with interest of how Ted Bundy killed so
many people undetected by law enforcement for so many years. This documentary
includes statistics given by friends of Bundy as well as law enforcement. The source is
not apparently accurate, but facts stated in this documentary match facts that I have found
in other academic sources. This is a very good source; it is up to date and contains lots of
interesting facts and testimony from police men and investigators.

accountid=27180. This article describes in detail the stages of sexual sadism and
psychopathic personality disorder. These issues are usually associated with each other
and do not develop naturally. This article is for professionals or students studying the
topic of psychopathy and sexual sadism. This article references numerous psychological,
behavioral, and criminal justice journals. There are also figures and tables to help
illustrate main ideas behind psychopathic and sexually sadistic individuals. Ted Bundy
possessed both mental issues that are covered in this article. I am looking for the real
reasons as to why he killed so many people. Having a detailed understanding of Bundys

Huseman 4
issues is key to understanding his crimes. All authors have reliable credentials. Mokros
and Osterheider are from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the
University of Regensburg School of Medicine. The other two authors are also
psychiatrists. The credentials of the authors make this source highly authoritative and
credible. This source was published in 2010. This source is slightly outdated, but that is
the only limitation. This source describes tendencies and behaviors of persons with
psychopathy and sexual sadism which is exactly what I was searching for.

This article contains a brief overview of Bundys life events and behavior. Most of the
information regarding Bundys behavior came from either mental health experts, or
officers that interrogated Bundy at some point in time. This is a useful source because it
gives testimony from professionals who have previously encountered the serial murderer.
The author of this article has a doctorate degree in psychology and is a professor at
DeSales University. She has the credentials to be considered authoritative and reliable.
This source is up to date. The only limitations to this source is that every subject covered
in the article is very brief. Though, it is still helpful because it also allows for further
research on certain aspects of Bundys behavior.
Rule, Ann. The Stranger Beside Me. Norton & Company: New York, 1980. Print. This book
was written by a close friend of Bundy. She writes in detail about every major event
regarding Ted Bundy from his childhood to his execution. This book is for both research

Huseman 5
or for entertainment so it has a broad target audience. I am unsure of the methods used to
collect the information for this source. This source is very useful in research. Every event
is covered in great detail, leaving no limitations. The book was written by one of Bundys
closest friends making the author very reliable and authoritative. This book is not up to
date. The information is still reliable because it was published after Bundy was tried for
his crimes. This book does not have any apparent limitations it is a great source.
S2DEliptiK. "Psychopath Ted Bundy's Interview Before Execution (Full)." YouTube. YouTube,
2016. Web. 21 November 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwyIOmjvvd8. This
source is credible because the information is supplied by Ted Bundy himself in his last
interview before execution. The interviewer asks Bundy about his motivation for the
killings as well as some of his final thoughts. In this interview, Bundy blames violent
pornography for influencing him to do such horrible things to innocent young women and
girls. This source contains bias because Bundy does not reflect on all of the unthinkable
acts he committed. This interview is likely intended for friends and families of Bundys
victims, or anyone who would want to hear his final words. This source is one of the
most useful in giving insight on Bundys emotions and his final thoughts. The source is
old, but still up to date.

student and a professor from the University of Kentucky psychology department. The

Huseman 6
credentials of the authors as well as the citations they place in the text ensure the
credibility of the source. This paper focuses on Ted Bundys psychological evaluation and
diagnosis. Also included in the paper are the methods researchers used to evaluate Mr.
Bundy. The information used in this paper was collected from academic sources and
psychology studies. Bundys condition was something never seen before and intriguing to
psychologists. The target audience of this paper is psychology students studying the
disorders that caused Bundy to kill so many. This is an excellent source. The writing is
well organized, scholarly, and accurate.
Weatherby, Georgie and Buller, Danielle and McGinnis, Katelyn. "The Buller-McGinnis Model
of Serial Homicidal Behavior: An Integrated Approach." Journal of Criminology and
Criminal Justice Research & Education, 2009. Web. 21 November
2016http://www.scientificjournals.org/journals2009/articles/1441.pdf. The model
represented by Georgie Weatherby is the Buller-McGinnis Model of Serial Homicidal
Behavior. The point of this model is to track the shared behaviors of serial killers to see
what they have in common with one another. Four known serial killers are examined in
the model. Amongst them there were two major similarities between them: isolation and
poor social environments growing up. Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway, Jeffery Dahmer and
John Gacy were compared side by side to determine which behaviors and other factors
they had in common were. This article targets people of higher education with interest in
the topic of murder. The source references several scholarly journals and books. This
book is limiting because it is about serial killers in general, not just Ted Bundy. Overall I
think this a really great source that has several picture and graphs to compare the data
collected from all four serial killers with well-written explanations under each one. The

Huseman 7
data here is scholarly and is directed toward an audience that wants to see specific details
about each serial killer and how they are similar to one another. This source is most
definitely 10 out of 10, the author has her Ph. D. and is a professor of criminal justice.

accountid=27180. This article is a review of a book about the general psychology behind
what makes a psychopath or serial killer. Who to blame for the behavior, and how to
identify these behaviors is the main purpose of the article. This article is intended for
professionals in the field of psychopathy or someone studying the topic. This article is
referenced by DSM-IV as well as a book written by a professor from the University of
British Columbia. Since I am looking for information regarding Ted Bundys
psychopathy, this article is exactly what I am looking for. It describes several common
diagnoses and behaviors amongst psychopaths. This information is both reliable and
authoritative. The author of the article is the chair of the forensic psychology department
and the University of Saskatchewan and also teaches at two other universities. The
information is referenced by a universal psychology diagnosis manual as well as a book
written by another psychology professor. This source is somewhat outdated but most of
the information provided is still relevant today. This source does not provide the specific
examples of Ted Bundys behavior, but is useful when compared to other sources on the
topic.
