7.4 Preparation of Scanning Surfaces and Welds Examination

7.4.t Weld Surface - The weld surface may be in as welded condition providing that it
does not interfere with the examination. Where the weld surface interferes with the
examination, the weld shall be prepared as need to permit examination. Where-the
scanning suface for angle probe is insufficient, the weld cap shall be dressed flush
for an angle and straight beam probes examination. The weld surface shall be
visually accepted prior to any ultrasonic examinatlon at ambient temperature. /

7.4.2 Base Material surface - scannins tufi{d-5.ff#',fil:-9enougn to permit

the examination volume to fully covered{The scanning surface shall be even and
free from foreign matter likely to interfere with probe coupling e.g. weld spatter,
loose scale, grease, rust, paint, dift, notches and grooves. Waviness of the test
surface shall not result in a gap between the probe and the test surface greater

than 0.5mm.v,

7.4.3 Thickness Survey - The thickness of each member to be tested shall be determined
by using pulse echo contact method utilizing straight beam probe. Actual thickness

determined shall be recorded on UT report. Deviation in thickness and

misalignmentrof butting joints should be recorded by the operator to assist weld
evaluation.

ftrlnub- LW?--A SnrWW ryWW1D Wlvar Lcilaraqtl\L

7.4.4Weld Examination - The angleT6eam shall be directed at approximate right angles

to the weld axis from two dirt'ctions where possible, to the entire volume of weld
and adjacent base metal./.During angle probe scanning a slight swivelling
movement up to an angle of 10" on either side of the nominal beam direction may
be applied. The speed of probe movement shall not exceed 1S0mmlsec. Overlap,
for 100o/o examination the interval between two successive scan lines shall not be
greater than the -6 dB beam width at any depth within the examination volume.
The scanning shall be peformed at a gain setting at least two times the primary
reference level. Evaluation shall be based on Primary reference level. /
7.5 Transfer Correction
/ lro lLg ll
7.5.1 When separate btocks are used for establisning reter/ce levels a measurement
shall be made of the transfer differences, betweey' test object and block, at
representative number of location as describe in ENt83.2 c|.6.5 .If the differences
are less than 2 dB, correction is not required. If the differences are greater than 2
dB but smaller than 12 dB, they shall be compensated for. If transfer losses exceed
12 dB, the reason shall be considered and further preparation of the scanning
surfaces shall be carried

out.

"/

7.5.2 Where ultrasonic testing is to be performed on steel produceci by controlled rolling

or Thermo mechanical treatment, reference blocks shall be produced perpendicular
to, and parallel to, the direction of rolling. fhe rolling direction shall be clearly
identified /
v
7.6 Signal to Noise Ratio
7.6.1 During examination of the weld the noise level excluding spurious surface
indications shall remain at least L2 dB below the evaluation level. ,/
7.7 Location of Indication
t 3'@ 7/6uRE Z
7.7.7 The loca/6n oT all indicationt shall be definsd by reference to a co-ordinate
system/A point on the examination surfacd$f'rtt be selected ds the origin for
these measurements.

7.7.2 Where examination is carried out from more than one surface, reference points
shall be established on each surface. Care shall be taken to establish a
positional relationship between all references points used, so that the absolute
location of all indications can be established from any nominated reference point.
