No Spirit of Fear
When the Prophet Joseph Smith sat in that little Peter Whitmer log cabin on April 6,
1830 and organized the Church on the earth again, I have often wondered if, in a
moment of reflection, he felt the heavy burden of taking this gospel to the world and
increasing it from 6 members to millions. Did he ever ask himself, "Can I really do this?-It looks so hard!" Did he feel some sense of fear that he might be rejected and that
he might fail? There were so many other large churches, so many different beliefs,
such wickedness in the world that he may have thought to himself in a moment of
weakness, "This is impossible--there is no way I can do this! We may never know, but
based on what we can tell from his writings, once tutored by the Lord, he was
absolutely fearless and moved forward with his prophetic destiny.
Elders and Hermanas, many of you may have felt some fear as you started in a
new area, went to a ward that had a reputation as "hard", went to an area that
hadn't baptized in some time, contacted a cold and aloof Spaniard for the first time,
called a couple to repentance who had been living in sin, spoke with an intellectual,
were opposed by someone that appeared to know the scriptures better than you,
and worked in a ward or branch which gave little support to the work of the Lord.
You may have thought, "There is no way I can be successful." If you have ever had
those feelings, you were experiencing FEAR--fear of failure, the fear of man, fear of
humiliation, fear of letting the Savior down.
Fear is an awful, paralyzing trait that renders us unable to meet our full potential as
emissaries of the Savior. I don't quote science fiction very often in my messages, but
there is a wonderful statement about fear and overcoming it from the movie, "Dune
taken from the book by Frank Herbert. It states, "I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer.
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear, I will permit it to
pass over and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see
its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing . Only I will remain." Wouldn't
that be a nice anthem to say every morning that you go out to face something that
you fear in missionary work? More importantly, the scriptures give us powerful support
in helping us realize that fear is a state of mind that can be overcome by great faith
and courage. In 2 Timothy 1:7 we read, "For God hath not give us the spirit of fear; but
of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Similarly, in Philippians 1:14, Paul spoke of
great missionaries when he said, "And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing
confident by my bond, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Finally, let me remind you that the God of the Universe backs us up, the Holy Ghost is
our constant companion, the Savior is with us daily as we preach His gospel and He has
surrounded us with angels. We can call upon the powers of heaven in our calling. We
were blessed with power and authority from on high. There is NOTHING we need to
fear--nothing.
It is my hope and prayer that El Faro missionaries will be bold and fearless because
truly, because of our sacred and holy calling, WE NEED FEAR NO MAN. We are backed
with the greatest force in the Universe--a force that will help us as we prepare the earth
for the second coming of the Savior.
No temo a nadie,

Meekness vs Anger
Meekness is yielding our personal rights and expectations with a desire to serve.
The Savior said, Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give
you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am MEEK and lowly in heart: And
ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matthew 11:
28-30). Jesus Christ is the supreme example of meekness. In his final hour on the cross he
exclaimed, Father forgive them for they know not what they do! Even as he faced
excruciating physical and spiritual pain he demonstrated meekness in his behavior.
People who are meek are humble, God fearing, righteous, patient, loving people. Their
temperament is calm, tolerant and submissive. Very often when you speak with them,
you feel of the sweet spirit that they possess. They are usually eager to hear what you
have to say and they listen more than they talk. Very often when they are praised for
something they deflect it and give the credit to others.
Elder Ulisses Soares of the Presidency of the Seventy said, Meekness is vital for us to
become more Christlike. Without it we wont be able to develop other important virtues.
Being meek does not mean weakness, but it does mean behaving with goodness and
kindness, showing strength, serenity, healthy self-worth, and self-control.
In the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 3:19, we are admonished to become as a child,
submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the
Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.
As missionaries we must learn to be meek and to convey our thoughts and feelings
with patience and gentle persuasion. I love this story of our missionaries who
demonstrated meekness. I was trained in the Bar 1 piso and I remember that one of
my greatest mission heroes is Elder ___, who was a zone leader there. I remember he was
always an incredible example because he was exactly obedient. He was a disciple of
my greatest mission heroes is Elder ___, who was a zone leader there. I remember he was
always an incredible example because he was exactly obedient. He was a disciple of
Christ and you could feel it. Thats why he was here to represent the Savior. The
greatest thing I remember was from an intercambio. We went to visit an investigator and
there was a testigo de Jehovh there. Our member present started to Bible bash. Elder
___ and I said nothing. The testigo finally asked us why we were so quiet. Elder___ said,
We only teach when the Spirit of the Lord is present. The only spirit here is the spirit of
contention. And we left. The power of this incredible disciple has always impacted
me. By controlling their reactions, remaining calm and avoiding contention these two
missionaries demonstrated the quality of meekness.
Recently we had the opportunity to hear from President and Sister Nelson and Elder
and Sister Kearon. As they shared their messages I felt the sweetest spirit and observed
how meek they were in the way they presented. I was very touched by their humility
and ability to invite the spirit in their conversations and teachings.
In a general conference talk Elder Neil A. Maxwell said, Required, is meekness of
mind which recognizes Gods perfect love of us and His omniscience. By acknowledging
these reassuring realities and accepting that God desires our full development and true
happiness, we are readied even as the learning experiences come. Such meekness
requires genuine intellectual honesty, owning up to the learning experiences of the past,
and listening to the Holy Ghost as he preaches to us from the pulpit of memory.
The Savior said, Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. As the kingdom
of God continues to roll forth, I believe those who have joined the church, have learned
the truths of the gospel, and are meek, will be the ones who will be blessed. We love you
and pray for you as you further develop the Christlike character attribute of meekness.
Sincerely, Hermana Dayton
