Early Stage 1 - Reading and viewing 1
Students:
understand concepts about print and screen, including how books, film and simple digital texts work, and know some
features of print, for example directionality (ACELA1433)
recognise the letters of the alphabet and know there are lower and upper case letters (ACELA1440)
Respond to, read and view texts
use comprehension strategies to understand and discuss texts listened to, viewed or read independently (ACELY1650)

Week 1

Using the Library


Premiers reading Challenge- introduction.
Reading ANZAC day book- in picture of Poppy draw what ANZAC day means to
them

Week 2

Author
Set up library for Little Theatre. Meet students at the door and explain how they
will be seated at chairs for the film. Have several Dr. Seuss books to show to the
students. Have picture of Dr. Seuss. Review: Title, use as you show books. Author
is the person who writes the story. Say the word author. Have students say the
word Ah like a doctor does. Then say the word. Let students know it is not like
the name Arthur. Talk about the author Dr. Seuss and show his picture so they
know he was a real person. Many students have his stories. Show titles and have
students raise their hands if they have that book.
Read a couple of titles. Students write An author writes books on picture of the
hat.
Author
Preparation: Have Jeannie Baker books. Have a picture of Jeannie Baker and many
of her books to show. Review: Author, title. Look at Jeannie Baker Story: Window
Look at Purpose for her book. Draw own changes in windows in their books.

Town Library Visit- learning about where books are located. Reading some books.
Illustrator
Preparation: Books by Bronwyn Bancroft: Why I love Australia, Big Rain Coming,
Remembering Lionsville. Review: Title, author Illustrator draws the pictures
(illustrations). Have students say these words, use them throughout lesson. These
books have the same author and illustrator, Bronwyn Bancroft but they have

different subjects. Discuss the subject. Draw own Bronwyn Bancroft inspired
illustration (Children can draw with direction)
Illustrator
Preparation: Books by May Gibbs, author/illustrator. Have images of gumnut
babies. Review: Author, illustrator Tell how Gibbs did both story (author) and
pictures (illustrator). Show some of her stories and talk about the pictures. Story:
Nuttybub and Nittersing. Children look at flower non-fiction books and design their
own flower people.
Discuss audience.
Preparation: Books by Pamela Allen, picture of author. Tell about author. Tell how
we put all our authors books together on the shelf. That this is a A author (point
to A in last name) and that these books all go together and the A author shelf.
After reading story, put the books on the A shelf. This will be repeated
throughout the coming weeks with celebrated authors. Story: The Bears Lunch,
Belinda.
Read two books and discuss subject matter of the two and how they are different.
Review fiction/non-fiction and parts of a story.
Purpose/audience/subject matter.
Look at parts of a book. Cover, Blank Page, Title Page,
Then write lines for story. Eight lines to the story needed. *Write class story onto
A4 paper- sentences can be cut and placed into the story for students who need
assistance.
First- beginning. Then middle, then end.
Writing story into library book.
Creating own book.
Being author and illustrator and creating non-fiction story- use books in library to
help. Purpose/audience/subject matter.
Write own story onto pages in the book OR cut sentences and glue them in. Begin
illustrating.

Draw own picture of favourite

Week 10

Being author and illustrator and using fiction books to help


Purpose/audience/subject matter.
Continue illustrating own stories and share with each other.
Fast finishers can draw book and reflect on what they know about books now. If
not time- do reflection as a whole class.
