The Salon of the Arts is an annual visual arts show presented by the North Kootenay Lake Arts and Heritage
Council in cooperation with the Langham Cultural Centre. This year the show runs from January 6 to 29 in both
Langham galleries and features the work of some fifty

sculpture and other works in a variety of media, including
clay, fibre and wood.

Committee (HSC) Report
Visitors at the recent Open House at the Victorian Community Health Centre of Kaslo (VCHCK)
saw how Primary Health Care services are being
improved and expanded, and there are more
improvements to come as government direction
focuses on this aspect of rural health care. Various service providers were on hand, including
those who offer complementary health services
in the community, to describe their work, offer
flu shots, blood pressure and blood glucose
checks, and consultations. The new Telehealth
service is up and running to avoid travelling
long distances to see specialists.
Most importantly, weekend clinic hours are being well used for appointments and urgent care
needs. This expansion is seen as a huge success
which is making a real impact on lives in the
North Kootenay Lake area. While the committee continues to work towards 24/7 ER service,
the weekend doctor availability goes a long way
toward addressing community needs.
Ambulance calls are nearing the point where
another car is required, so dont be shy about
calling when necessary. There is no charge for
those on premium assistance; $80 for others.
The 2 new community paramedic positions will
be operational in spring 2017.
Our local politicians had positive meetings with
Ministry of Health at the recent UBCM where
they discussed area needs and successes. There
are openings for new members to serve on

Top Tips for a Healthy

Holiday Season
Plan Ahead
Throughout the holiday season when going out,

socializing, traveling, etc, its a good idea to
keep your meals/snacks planned a bit ahead of
time. Spend time preparing healthy snacks with
family and friends. Social gatherings tend to be
filled with high fat, salty and sugary foods and
beverages. Bring your own dish and beverages
so you know there will be healthy options and
you dont fill up on empty calorie high fat foods
and drinks. For festive drink ideas, try carbonated water with fresh or frozen fruit, cucumber or
berries. Mix it up by adding fresh herbs such as
rosemary or mint, and top it off with a shot of
spirits! You could also bring cold tea or Zevia that
is made with stevia,
a natural zero calorie sweetener.
Eat your Veggies

Veggies are wonderful to have
chopped up in the
fridge as a graband-go snack. They are also a great way to create a lot more volume in a dish to make you
feel like youre eating a lot more than you actually are. Theyre full of water, fibre, nutrients,
and taste amazing when prepared in a way
you love. Some great choices of locally grown
veggies are carrots, parsnips, celery, cucumber,
cherry tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. Serve
with nutritious dips like hummus, eggplant dip
(baba ganoush), tzatziki, or make your own with
plain Greek yogurt, organic local cream cheese
or sour cream as the base and add fresh herbs
and spices. Want a salty snack? Try root veggie
chips or bean chips! These tasty chips have way
less fat than regular potato chips and are higher
in fibre and protein.
Try this!
Before heading out for a social gathering, have a

small snack or meal to help control your hunger
and lessen the urge to snack on appetizers that
can be full of fat and high in calories. Try adding
in a raw vegetable salad, raw veggie sticks, etc.,
to the very start of your meals (especially the
ones you find are more calorically dense) and
eat these first. This will not only allow your bodies natural hunger cues to register a bit faster
because the action of chewing vegetables takes
a lot longer than a spoonful of mashed potatoes, but it will also be easier on your digestion
and fill you up quicker! Youll be saving yourself from over consuming calories you normally
wouldnt just by adding in veggies.
Tips for the Host

If you are hosting an event, place appetizers on
smaller plates. An interesting study showed that
how food is served could influence how much
people will eat. The study showed that people
ate less when food was served in smaller portions
rather than having large plates of appies spread
across the table. Have other plates ready in the
kitchen to bring out when plates are finished.
Try using the same trick as restaurants and caterers. If you are serving a buffet-style dinner,
start with lighter, lower-calorie foods, such as
salads or veggies at one end, then put the higher
calorie items like meat, potato, gravy and desserts at the other end of the table. As guests fill
up their plates, they are more likely to load up
on salads and veggies leaving less room for the
more calorie dense items at the end of the table.
Always have a fresh pitcher of room temperature water available for guests to rehydrate
between alcoholic beverages. Try adding fresh
lemon slices, cranberries and even a sprig of
rosemary!

Holiday Hamper Campaign
This is the thirteenth year in a row that the Nelson Food

Cupboard has offered holiday hampers to community
members having trouble making ends meet. These hampers provide healthy, tasty food for 500 people for whom
the holidays are often a less than happy time. Many volunteers, local donors and a small staff come together at this
time each year to make the program happen.
The month of November was a record breaker for the Nelson Food Cupboard. More than 1700 visits to the food bank
program were recorded. Weve all heard about how food
bank visits are rising exponentially the month of November brought it home. Now, more than ever, there are people
here in our community in need of good healthy food.
Donations to the Food Cupboard and the Holiday
Hamper Program can make a real difference over the
holidays. Some numbers to illustrate: $57 helps a single
person, $143 helps a small family and $257 helps a large
family. Larger and/or monthly donations can also have a
year-round impact.

The Holiday Hamper program is an extension of the Nelson Food Cupboards year-round work providing people
impacted by low incomes with healthy food and opportunities to learn food skills in the garden and kitchen. More
than just giving out basic food, we at the Food Cupboard
are focused on giving community members fresh, healthy,
locally sourced foods whenever we can, says Holiday
Hamper coordinator Kim Charlesworth. The people we
serve tell us how much they appreciate the food we give
them and how it makes them feel better both physically
and mentally. Especially over the holidays when its easy
for people to feel a little left behind.
The community can help in many ways financial
donations go toward the hampers and grocery purchases for the upcoming months, food donations stock
the shelves for January and people interested in putting
a hamper together themselves can be matched with an
anonymous family.

Funds For CARES
Selkirk Colleges Contemporary Music and Technology

Program students are hitting the stage at Spiritbar in Nelson on Thursday, December 15 in an event that showcases
their talent and generosity to the community.
The annual winter show and celebration features five
student based ensembles performing an eclectic mix of
genres. All proceeds from this night of entertainment will
go to the Nelson CARES Society Room to Live campaign
which is creating affordable housing for people in Nelsons
downtown core.
Students have been working diligently preparing for this
event as part of their learning at the Tenth Street Campus
of Selkirk College. Some of the ensembles are joined by
Selkirk College instructors who have mentored and collaborated with the students.

highlighting Japanese and Asian Canadian history and
culture as important in broadening the focus of the Langham. This year Tchir secured grant funding from Heritage
Canada to organize a 75th Anniversary commemoration
of the internment of Japanese Canadians at the Langham
in the fall of 2017.
Continuing into the future, the Langham Board is now
pleased to announce the appointment of Paul GraceCampbell as the new executive director. Paul begins work
in January. Tchir says, Paul is a man of integrity and is
very familiar with rural communities. The Langham will
benefit from his wide knowledge of nonprofits, grant
writing and team building. The next phase and challenge
for the Langham is to further develop security and safety
for the building, to enhance its cultural and heritage programs and develop a stronger community presence in
Kaslo and beyond.
Paul brings a diverse set of skills and experience to the
Society. University trained in the visual arts and as a geologist, he has worked in small rural communities in Panama and Oregon. In Panama he cultivated an enduring
interest in living and working in small remote communities. He also became a successful grant writer in community development organizations in the nonprofit sector. In
2007, Paul and his wife, Dona, moved to Bella Coola, BC.
A drummer since the age of 12, Paul has had a lifelong
involvement with music. For seven years Paul worked
with local artistic and cultural organizations, most notably the Bella Coola Music Festival, where he served the
board as both president and secretary.
Along with diverse experiences, Paul brings a positive
can-do attitude and a good sense of humour to his new
job. His lifelong interest lies in developing creative cultural and economic revitalization for small rural communities. At the Langham, the next chapter is waiting to be
written. Reflecting on his new position at the Langham,
Grace-Campbell says, It is important to the fabric of a
community to have a thriving arts and culture hub like
the Langham. Like many folks, the Langham is a big reason why we chose to move to Kaslo. To have this opportunity to apply my skills and experience to continue all
the great programming and to help expand the Langhams
scope and influence is a privilege and an honour.
