Why are effective communication skills necessary?
van, Dalen J. "Communication Skills in Context: Trends and Perspectives." Patient Education
and Counseling. 92.3 (2013): 292-295. Print.
This critical interpretation of effective communication skills discusses the trends and
perspectives. Effective communication can exist is first, the patient knows why they have come
to see the doctor along with the worries and anxieties that they have. Second, the doctor is the
expert who can translate the patients complaint into a medical frame of reference. Third, the
doctor knows what can be done as any alternatives and the patient judges the alternatives in their
own circumstances, possibilities and preferences. Afterwards the patient decides what they want
to do. Information has to be related to what we already know in order for it to be learned best.

Boykins, AD. "Core Communication Competencies in Patient-Centered Care." The Abnf

Journal : Official Journal of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty in Higher Education, Inc.
25.2 (2014): 40-5. Print.
This article is about how to nurses can effectively communicate with patients. The article
discusses how communication should be a two-way process of expressive and receptive
communication so that the message and responsibilities of both the nurse and the patient are
understood. Nurses should also adapt their own communication based on patient and family
assessment. They should know visual, auditory, and tactile communication while as well as
actively listening to comments, concerns, and questions. Communication is verbal and nonverbal
as well as involving excellent listening skills.
TEDx Talks. Build don't break relationships with communication - connect the dots | Amy Scott
| TEDxQueenstown. Online video clip. YouTube. 29 April 2016. Web. 5 December 2016.
This video is about the different type of communication styles that people possess. There are
some people who process by thinking thoroughly and they are interested in facts and figures.
They tend to have a more straight up approach. There are also some people who process
information by turning the words that they are hearing into picture in their minds. They tend to
be the people putting up signs reminding people to clean out the coffee cups. The last type of
person processes things by simply by getting a feel for whats occurring. They turn everything
that they hear into feelings and sensations and are hands-on. They need to feel comfortable
before theyre going to start the task or do what others that are requesting them to do now with
that little bit of information. She goes on to say that communication is vital to truly connecting
with others.

Leaf Group, 15 Apr. 2015. Web. 6 Dec. 2016. <http://www.livestrong.com/article/156961-theimportance-of-verbal-non-verbal-communication/>.
This article discusses what verbal and non-verbal communication is. The author states that verbal
communication is any form of communication involving words, spoken, written or signed. We
are able to communicate with words because we have an organized system of words. We use our
words to inform others of our needs and to convey knowledge. Clarification is an important
when verbally communicating because if we do not articulate our words the way we intend to,
then our words can be misinterpreted. Nonverbal communication is body language, such as
gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and posture, and it also includes touch. Nonverbal
communication is important because it works alongside verbal communication as well as helping
people to express emotions, communicate interpersonal relationships, support verbal interaction,
reflect personality and perform rituals.
