DESCRIPTION OF SI UNITS ........................................................................................................ 8
1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This standard contains conversion factors for commonly used quantities from the U.S. Customary
(inch-pound) measurement system into the units of measurement for metric projects defined in Halliburton
KBR Design Specification 9-6D. Also included in this standard are conversions from various
measurement systems, including MKS, cgs, and U.S. Customary (inch-pound) into the International
System of units (SI).
1.2 Halliburton KBR Documents and Industry Standards
1.2.1 The Halliburton KBR document shown below are applicable to the extent referenced herein. The
applicable edition of the documents below is as specified on the current Index of Company Standards, or Index
of Project Specifications for a given project.
HALLIBURTON KBR
9-6D, "Units of Measurement for Metric Projects"
1.2.2 Industry Standards referenced herein and their applicable dates of issue are as follows:
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS (ASTM)
ASTM E380, "Standard Practice for the Use of International System of Units (SI)"
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ASME)
ASME GUIDE SI-1, "ASME Orientation and Guide for use of SI (Metric) Units"
2. CONVERSION TABLE USAGE
2.1 Units of measure metric projects defined in Halliburton KBR Design Specification 9-6D are noted by
an enclosure
in the "TO" column of Table I. Other conversions shown in Table I are
formatted to obtain units of the SI system.
2.2 The conversion factors in Table I have been obtained from ASTM E380 and other published sources.
These factors are given in tabular form by "QUANTITY" with selected units (U.S. Customary, cgs, MKS)
appearing in the "TO CONVERT FROM" column and the desired metric unit appearing in the "TO"
column. The conversion factors appear under the "MULTIPLY BY" heading.
2.3 To obtain an equivalent metric unit, multiply the quantity in U.S Customary, cgs, MKS listed in the
column "TO CONVERT FROM" by the conversion factor listed under the "MULTIPLY BY" heading.
2.4 The conversion factors under the "MULTIPLY BY" heading are given in two columns:
a.
The left column ("Direct Notation") contains conversion factors which are rounded off to five (5)
significant digits and presented in direct format.
DATA STANDARD
METRIC CONVERSION FACTORS
The right column ("Exponential Notation") contains the same factors accurate to five (5) significant
digits presented in exponential notation. The factors in this column are written as a number
(mantissa) greater than one and less than 10. This number is followed by E (to indicate exponential
notation), a positive (+) or negative (-) sign, and a two-digit exponent indicating the power of 10 by
which the number must be multiplied to obtain the correct value.
Example:
2.345 6 E-02
6.789 0 E+03
c.
9-6DS-02
-2
= 2.345 6 x 10
3
= 6.789 0 x 10
= 0.023 456
= 6 789.0
The conversion obtained by using the conversion factors from either column shall be subject to the
accuracy and rounding provisions of Section 4 of ASTM E380.
3. EDITORIAL INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 Symbols
3.1.1 Symbols for metric units should be written as shown in the "TO" column of Table I. In general,
symbols for metric units are written in lower case unless the unit is derived from a proper name,
e.g., N for Isaac Newton.
3.1.2 When units are expressed as words rather than symbols, the units are not capitalized, even though
they are derived from proper names, e.g., meter, newton, pascal.
3.1.3 Symbols for metric units are not followed by a period (full stop) unless they are at the end of a
sentence.
3.1.4 When writing symbols for derived units, a center dot is used to denote multiplication and a solidus
(slash) to denote division, e.g., joule per kilogram~kelvin = J/kg~K. Only one solidus is permitted in each
derived symbol.

NOTES TO TABLE I:
1.
2.
Conversion ratios for volumetric flow rates at "normalized" or "standard conditions" are outside the
scope of this document. The flow rates noted as normalized or standard are defined by regulation or
contract and are not valid for engineering calculations. Hence, conversion ratios for volumetric flow
rates at normalized or standard conditions should not be used.
3.
Fluid pressure shall be designated as gauge (kg/cm g or psig) or absolute pressure (kg/cm a or psia)
as appropriate.
4.
5.
3.2 Prefixes
Table II contains a list of prefixes (factors) which can be applied to any unit to make it more manageable
by changing its order of magnitude to eliminate insignificant digits.
a.
Only prefix factors which themselves have a factor of 10 are recommended. The prefixes
-2
-1
2
centi (10 ), deci (10 ), and hecto (10 ) are included only for information; their use should be avoided
