Tolerance
There are few countries in the world where people do not believe that they are the best, the most
intelligent, or at least the most normal! In Europe, it is perhaps the Italians who are the most innocent here,
because they are often more likely to criticize themselves before others, but they do consider themselves to
be normal! If we each consider ourselves normal, then it must mean that we consider everyone else to be
strange! This is clearly shown in how one nation thinks about another. For example, for some, the Italians
are too emotional, because they use their arms a lot when talking! To Spanish people, the Japanese appear
cold but some Japanese think that the Americans are excessively bad-mannered! How tolerant we will
need to become if we are to live happily and peacefully in the world today!
Adapted from When Cultures Collide by Richard
D. Lewis

1 Italians criticize others before they criticize themselves.

2 Some people think Italians are too emotional.
3 Spanish people think the Japanese are bad-mannered.
4 Some Japanese think the Americans are bad-mannered.
5 We have to learn to be more emotional if we want world peace.
