INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT: THE LORAX MOVIE

The movie that I decided to watch is The Lorax that was inspired from a children
book written by Dr Seuss. It is because the movie portray an eye-opening reality
of ethical issue among human. The early scene of this film shows the daily life of
Ted Wiggins, a teenage boy who lived in Tneedville along with his mother and
grandmother. He has major crush on his friend Audrey who loves real tree rather
than those artificial one in their town. So Ted decided to find a real tree in order
to win Audreys heart. But he cant seem to find any real tree in Tneedville so he
decided to ask his family about it. His grandmother addressed as Grammy Norma
told him to go find a man named Once-ler to find the answer. So he went to
Once-ler house multiple times to fulfil his intention. Once-ler then told him the
whole story on what had happened before Ted tried to restore the tree back in
Tneedville.
The central ethical conflict in the plot is about human greed towards
wealth and power. There are two character that mainly involved in the ethical
issue which is Once-ler and Aloysius OHare. Once-ler is a bright young men who
has big dream on making money on his own. When he arrived at Truffula Tree
Forest, he chopped one of the tree and made an invention out of it. But the Lorax
who is the forest guardian prevented him from furthering his action, and he
promise to stop. But later he broke his promises and started chopping all of the
tree for his business that ended up destroying the forest. While Aloysius OHare
took advantage of the situation by selling bottled oxygen and brainwashing the
people about the downside of planting trees. Both of them did unethical gesture
by destroying the forest and spreading false propaganda.
The characters that are affected by their decision and actions are the
people of Tneedville as well as the animals in the forest. The people in Tneedville

have to pay some amount of money just to breathe some fresh air since there
are no real trees in the town. Moreover, the OHare Air company tried to gain
more money by manipulating the people. While the animals in Truffula Tree
Forest are forced to migrate from their habitat since it was destroyed by the
Once-ler for his business.
Both of the characters has had some fair share for their past actions.
Once-lers business didnt went well and soon collapsed after all of the trees
been chopped down and he was disown by his family. The Lorax and all the
animals who he befriended were disappointed in him and even his donkey turn
him down. The Lorax went back to his place and never returned, leaving the
Once-ler feeling guilty and terrible. But Once-ler gave Ted the last seed and told
him to raise peoples awareness about the importance of green world. After Ted
successfully did his job, the Lorax came back to the forest and meet Once-ler and
told him that he did the right thing. While Aloysius OHare was sent out by his
own bodyguard after all of the people in Tneedville realizes his scheme and
decided to let the tree grow.
I honestly believe that integrity and fairness are important. Since we lived
in a competitive world, it is only natural that some people decided to take a
twisted road in order to achieved their dreams. But its not okay to break the
rules and mistreat others for the sake of your wish. All of the people work hard
for their dreams too and only the best shall pass. If people want something, then
they had to take the rough road and earn it the right way just like everyone did.
In some point I do relate to Once-lers action. Sometimes I do contemplating
whether I should make unethical decision on specific event to fulfil my goal in
life.

Just like Once-ler, I want to achieve something big in my life and become
the pride of my family. But good things does not comes easy and life can be
challenging. There was time when I want to get the highest score in my class for
an examination. Some of my friends decided to cheat in the exam and
persuading me to do the same. Though I was tempted, I decided to just be
honest with myself and did the best on the exam instead of cheating.

This movie teach me that human greed knows no boundaries. People

would never be satisfied with their current status, so they will do anything to get
to their goal even if it is an unethical thing to do. Though this movie consist of
animation that is based on childrens book, it does provide moral values and
social criticism about the society we are living in. It teach me on how greed and
unethical deed would affect the person and society as a whole. So it is important
to educate ourselves to differentiate between the ethical and unethical
behaviour as well as the importance of it.
