Wrtsil Turbocharger Wash

The wash unit can be mounted on a wall or on the

service platform close to the engine.

KEY BENEFITS
Fully-automated, remote-controlled
wash unit
Minimal risk of component damage
Compact unit
Prolonged life of components

Extend the interval

between overhauls
Regular cleaning of turbochargers to remove
the build up of deposits on the turbine and
compressor, extends the interval between
overhauls and keeps them in good operating
condition. Turbocharger fouling may cause
unbalance to the rotor, which in turn increases
vibration levels and creates excessive loading
on the bearings. Cleaning the turbocharger
with water is a proven and accepted method
of preventing this.
Wrtsil offers a fully-automated wash
unit, which eliminates the need for manual
timing of the wash sequence. Because the
possibility of human error is eliminated, the
risk of damaging components for example
cracked gas inlet casings, deformed nozzle
rings, deformed shroud ring causing turbine
wear, etc. is also avoided. Wrtsils fully

automated solution, which controls the wash

sequence from the PLC or a separate control
unit, provides effective and correct cleaning
every time.
The operating principle is straightforward:
A counter, which can be set between 5 and
500 hours, keeps the operator informed of the
running hours accumulated so that the wash
sequence can be initiated at the appropriate
time. The sequence is started from the control
and monitoring system (WOIS) in the control
room, or from the local control panel.
In power plants running parallel to the
grid, the reduction in engine load, the water
injection, and the load increase are all carried
out automatically. With installations operating

in island mode, the load must be reduced

manually. The running hours counter is
automatically reset after a successful wash.
This very compact unit is equipped with
remotely controlled solenoid valves and
connections for the water and compressed air
supplies. The unit also comes complete with
WOIS/ PLC software upgrades, and all required
hoses and adapters for connecting the unit to
the turbocharger.

AUTOMATICALLY EFFECTIVE
The Wrtsil Turbocharger wash ensures that
the turbocharger is regularly and correctly
cleaned without having to rely on manual
labour.
For power plants operating parallel to
the grid, the load is automatically reduced
by the PLC to keep the temperature of the
exhaust gas at the turbine inlet below 430 C.
Including load ramps, and low temperature
stabilization for 10 minutes before and after
water injection, the total wash sequence lasts
for approximately 50 minutes.
For marine or island mode power plant
applications, the load must be reduced by
the operator to keep the temperature of the
exhaust gas at the turbine inlet below 430 C.

Control unit

The lower load is maintained for

10 minutes before and after the water
injection cycle before being increased back
to the initial load.
The compressor is washed at high load
in a separate sequence with a 10 second
injection.
PREVENTING THE UNEXPECTED
Downtime can be expensive. When the
turbocharger has to be taken out of service
to replace damaged components, operating
costs are increased and productivity suffers.
The Wrtsil Turbocharger wash is a costeffective and efficient means of preventing the
unexpected and maintaining the turbocharger
in good operating condition.
